Datsuns and D4

With all the media hype in nz a few months ago and claims that the europeans were calling them the saviours of rock, does anyone know how there record sales went?

Would be interesting to see how they sold over seas and how they went in nz?

Forums: NZ Music,

datsuns have gone gold in nz. I don't think the d4 have got there yet here, but they have shipped 100000 units to retail shops in the USA, so there's a good chance they'll be chalking up decent sales at some point.

wicked as, I hope they will sell out in the U.S, or is 100,000 sales not that much in terms of money, well heck, if they made a dollar for each record they will still be doing well.

What is gold in NZ? (I think World wide and in hte US its 500,000, I'd guess the NZ number would be somewhat smaller with out population and all)

gold = 5000
platinum = 10000

// or is 100,000 sales not that much in terms of money

I think, and don't quote me on this, that the D4 have licensed their album to Hollywood Records, so they actually stand to make a fair profit should they shift some units. Since they've essentially handed over a finished product, and have thus avoided all the debt-inducing exercises that a lot of bands seem to indulge in when scoring major record deals (eg. expensive recording sessions with highly-paid producers, and then a couple of big budget videos), everything from here in is pretty much pure profit. No doubt there will be record label expenses that will have to be recouped before the royalties start flowing in the D4 coffers, but I imagine they stand a pretty good chance of seeing some actual cash when the albums starts to pick up some sales.

Again, don't quote me on that.

// gold = 5000
platinum = 10000

god..i always thought is was 7500 and 15,000...now the NZ market seems even more depressing.
platinum in the uk is 300,000 and in the US is 1,000,000...right????

cool, I hope that you're right noizyboy, it would be nice if they could make some real cash off there record. I know that its about the music and that such things as money are evil and thats not the goal, but really once the musics 'gone' (not paying the bills) its back to the work force and music becomes that hobby/pasion you have in the basement/garage/bedroom/deck and so on. Whats wrong with trying to make some bucks out of pleasure or at least a bit of a nest egg. One small break on an international level could set you for life in new zealand, depending on how wise you are with the money I guess :)

I guess if I ever get famous I will be one of those 'artists' who 'sells out' to the 'man' and the 'big bucks'... but really how many bands and artists can claim that they don't want there works aclaimed and to be able to live off it while they're at it... probably boils down to a fair amount of luck in hte end though

I may be wrong, but then so would RIANZ, from whose site I took the figures.

USA
500,000 gold
1 million platinum

UK
100,000 gold
300,000 platinum

so delving into the unfamiliar world of maths...

4 million kiwis / 5000 units to go gold = 1 in every 800 people needs to have bought the album.

300 million yanks / 500,000 units = 1 in every 600

60 million poms / 100,000 = 1 in every 600

...so, it's actually (ahem) *harder* to go gold or platinum here than in the UK or USA.

duh, or the opposite. easier. maths, ey?

but are "we" in NZ more likely to buy CD's its seems to me that NZ seems to be a rather easy target for overseas CDs i always see people saying they like NZ cause it was one of the 1st places they got a gold CD... and if what noizy said is true then per person we must buy more CDs???

i don't know, but thats what it seems to me

So how hard iz it in Australia?

i thought gold was 7500 and platinum was 15000 in nz. has it changed or am i just stupid?

pffft. way to beat me to the mark ian..

Actually - all of you are right ... in a way ....
5,000 = Gold Single
10,000 = Plantinum Single

7,500 = Gold album
15,000 = Platinum Album

The different scale is mean't to reflect the fact the singles market is substantially smaller than the album market ....

so does this effect occur around the world on singles?

and i also noted that when reading about double cd's it has an effect of platinum certicfication

caff! long time no see.

thanks for clearing that up. so my revised maths is...

4 million kiwis / 7500 units = 1 in 533.

That's a bit better. And it is harder.

i don't know if it is the same around the world for singles charts - i do know that nz has a particularly weak market as far as singles sales go.

... i forgot to say in the last post, apparently the datsuns are just about gold in the uk!

well i'm glad i'm not completely stupid.

// And it is harder.

of course....everyone knows how easy it is to go platinum in the US. duh! i line my rubbish bin with my US platinum records.

I am pretty happy that the D4 and Datsuns are doing well over seas. The D4 are been pushed on Yahoo.com and they also played the Late show.

i watch that on prime '9' every week night almost.. now it used to be old'sh, but now its only a day or two old... or has it always been this way... becasue i missed the datsuns, which i was really looking forward to seeing...

did they cut a few days out to get it up to date... or did i just miss it one night and that happened to be the night hmmm....

I missed the late show with the D4 i was so unhappy but the boys are still doing good.
The Datsuns are doing very well and im very pround of our boys from NZ!!

ha! but you are biased eh tom?
...i have noticed a few backlash type articles in over seas mags (that is, the NME) its not great and it worries me a little.

i saw the late show, it was great, i wish i got to shake hands with bill cosby

From the view from my little corner of the US (Boston), I think currently the Datsuns has the edge. They are clearly getting more press coverage, filling up larger gigs and are more familiar with the spotty DJ's at my local college station.

The D4 have definitely developed a loyal following around these parts, but theres not the huge buzz that is developing around the Datsuns.

I thought by this time Pacifier would be breaking through, but currently they are only playing support slots. I'm not sure whose decision this is, but I'm hoping that they will start their own headlining tour. I'm pretty skeptical about the current approach.

Hoping for more enzeders to come this way soon
HDU?
Chris Knox?
Alistair Parker?

maybe it's cos pacifier have totally declined in quality. there's an article in a Listener that reviewed a show they did, and had a horrible crowd response. it was filled with straight edgers and pacifier's sex/drugs/etc portrayal did not go down well at all. especially jon toogood's inability that sXe kids don't want to "....smoke a fat joint for this next song..."

fuck i hate how i miss out whole chunks of what i want to type. i should learn to stay off the forums after 10 hrs of working a graveyard

I think its always pretty touch and go whether the folks that came to see the main band will connect with the support acts. I thought that Pacifier connected pretty well with the audience when I saw them a couple of months ago in Boston. I was impressed that considering how far they were down the bill how much of themselves they were putting into their showl

I guess my opinion is slightly biased haha.

Fuck, if I was at that Pacifier show I woulda smashed all them straight edgers...stupid bogan faggots. HAHAHA, then I woulda smashed pacifier, and shot them and stuff HAHAHA....stupid rock band sellouts. PUNK RAWK!!!!!
