NZ MUSIC month

what is it with NZ music month, it's a crock of poo actually.

it's the only one month where bands scamper on top of each other in an attempt to get heard.
do you expect us to believe that people are only listening out then?

and why should I rush to get my music to the radio station, it will only end up on the bottom of a giant pile of crap.

for some people, making music is a full-time, lifetime job.
not a one month of the year opportunity!

Forums: NZ Music,

Hopefully people are listening out for great NZ music all the time ...

BUT ... NZ Music Month provides an opportunity to promote NZ music as part of a coordinated effort. At least that is how it seems to me. And while there are more than likely "commerical" strings attached surely the aim of promoting NZ music is honorable. The music that gets promoted may not be your particular cup of tea. That can't be helped.

If you don't like the particular "official" programmes that are put in place for NZ Music Month then why not hi-jack the idea and take it to your particular Cuba.

Now I am not criticising you particularly ... from what I have seen on these boards you are passionate about music. That can never be a bad thing. I am probably a little more conservative in my outlook on things than you but I certainly agree that a lot of what passes for music on the radio these days is crap. Whether NZ or otherwise.

Oh, for the early days of the real Pirates on Hauraki (1480 kHz AM) .. not those dumb-ass morning pirates they inflict on us each weekday .. the real Pirates who played the music that the young people wanted to hear ... I wonder what Hauraki will do for NZ Music month this year ... I can guarantee there won't be any new music. They made a bit of thing about supporting NZ Music last year ... and while I love Dragon and Misex and Split Enz etc ... playing their music does NOT support contemporary NZ music, IMHO.

God, this has turned into a bit of a ramble ...

Anyway, I kinda agree with you Trillion, but not entirely ... NZ Music, the good, the bad and the utterly crass, must be promoted. And focussing people on it for a few weeks might just help some of the strugglers to break through.

//I certainly agree that a lot of what passes for music on the radio these days is crap. Whether NZ or otherwise.

I agree stu:
nz music month is a great opportunity for the 'culture killer' corporates who see a quick way to make a buck from nz music is to choose an emulation of a chart topper and milk it for all it's worth, this is what we shall be seeing alot of this May, but then next year they'll have moved on to the next hip copycats when the 'now' style is out of fashion.
i realise this is a tired debate, but i will leave you with some words recycled from the great Lindon Puffin:

Q. Is it better to have Britany Spears or Linkin Park on our local radio, or a New Zealand Version??

A. It is better to have no Britany Spears or Linkin Park!

http://www.darktower.co.nz/trillion ]

A: There is always room for good pop music, no matter what country it comes from.

trillion's answer was better...

I stared puzzled for a split second... but you're right, its better that we get original sounding stuff out there than reproducing Britney or Linkin Park... or did I miss the point, hmm, I'll read the body text again...

I think the sadest thing about taking a song by a band, sticking it on TV commercials, ads for shows, maybe have it appear on a tv show... then release the single, have it all over radio and a music video between every second TV show, interviews on the news, bla bla bla, the list goes on... the sadest thing is that at the end of the day its just new zealand... and now that the blood has been sucked out of the band and everyone is sick of them, they can't really forfill there potential? and been the sad thing about been in new zealand they will not make a crap load of cash to make up for it.

a problem is that alot of nz musicians have not many quality songs in them
or:
i'd rather like to think the NZ music industry suffocates talent.

how many top selling, good, first albums are there?
and how many second or third just as good by the same artist? not many.

why? trying to hard.

Well, there are some good points here but shit you guys can be cynical!

There may well be some flaws in NZmusic month - ie what Trillion is talking about is half true...we've just released a single to radio and I dont think the NZ music month angle helped us one bit in getting radio play. BUT - lets look on the bright side: It started as nzmusic week and has now extended to a month, 2002 was WAY better than 2001 in commercial industry support for nz music, and if it means that there is more nz music regardless of the genre on radio then thats got to be good for local bands.

Face the facts guys: right or wrong, Britney and Linkin Park sell records. Powder pop and american angst rap rock are not my thing at all, but I would much rather the punters were buying Blindspott and Nesian Mystik than the american versions.

but what does it encourage the youngsters to do??
it say's:
if you want to make it in New Zealand music,

YOU MUST COPY OVERSEAS!

this doesnt promote creativity and it waters down cultures.
that cant be a good thing.
