I often wonder this myself. When the Iraqis are cheering in front of Iraqs military, the media likes to point out it is becuase they have to, they have been threatened by the regime and must cheer to stay alive. But for the 'coalition', the cheering is authentic.
Is it? What do they say after the army passes through? If the Iraqis have spent years cheering saddams brutal armies, so as to not feel their wrath, why would they react any differently when the US and the UK pass by, guns loaded? Especially when they've recently killed your brother, wife or child in 'precision' bombing? Is it actual jubilation or a learned survival tactic?
just read this on the toronto star, so thought I'd add it as well. And my gf friend wonders why I yell at the television. Anyone else got that malady lately?
