New Rip It Up cover

Forums: The Bar,

its a porn magazine now??

hmm....

yuck.

i hope its a piss take.

I heard a radio ad for it so I guess not.

Yuck is right.

I mean I like the picture on the front and everything, but....
Pshh. Not Cool RIU.

Whats wrong with it?
Its just a chick with no top on.
big deal.

taken from THE most unflattering possible angle...ie with a wide angle lense low down basically makes her thighs look huge and her torso look tiny.
I like how it is not an impossibly tiny model and a slightly more realistic figure, but please....use a fashion photographer next time.

Woah. I see the camera angle thing, and I know you're a photographer, but er do you only hang out with models?

// but er do you only hang out with models?

usually...but sometimes i hang out with nato

does he give you rides in his Big Rockstar Car?

does it have mexican bouncing suspension? and fur on the inside?

oh hang on. that's a big hiphipstar car.

do you mean a bogan car?

I'd take nato over a model any day.

// I'd take nato over a model any day.

What? Like a threesome sort of a thing? Wouldn't the model get squashed?

I like to watch.

*pulls out webcam*

Where's her head??

Sorry, they only show the heads when the women are wearing clothes

c'mon RIU...was it really necessary?

www.canyou.say/sales? ]

i heard on the radio that it was the "sex" issue
but seriously was it necessary RIU? i thought you were a music magazine not a porn magazine i wont be buying it this month thats for sure

*shakes head furiously*

Ah, rock and naked ladies. That old one.

The Strokes "Is this it?" CD has a woman's bare bottom on the cover. I was intrigued enough by this band who had the nerve to stick a naked lady on the cover of their album that I listened to it, liked it, and eventually bought it. A naked lady on the cover of RIU would intrigue me to look at the magazine, but I wouldn't buy it unless it was good on the inside.

The RIU cover reminds me a lot of the Ween "Chocolate and Cheese" cover, which is sexist and objectifies women's bodies, but it's Ween, man, and they are obnoxious, yet talented punk-arses, so they're allowed to have some boobs on their album cover.

It would have been more fun if RIU had got a sexy New Zealand rock boy or rock girl to get their kit off for the album cover. RollingStone have been doing sexy covers - the one of David Cassidy with his pubes showing is brilliant. If K'Lee can get her tits out for that rugby magazine, why can't RIU get someone for their cover?

I can imagine a few parents would hesitate picking up that issue for their kids from the supermarket. I know when I was about 16 I would have been embarassed to buy a magazine with that on the cover, and if I did somehow end up with it, I would have kept it turned cover-down, or hidden away (oh, the shame!).

It'll be interesting to see who will be gracing RIU's future non-sex issue covers.

agreed robyn - why didn't they actually put a musician on the cover? connect it with music in some tangible way? cos it aint! it's just there and it's pretty damned lazy, even though she has lovely breasts ... cough cough sorry ...

i would've been more impressed if they played with the sex=music thing and put a pretty boy on the cover in a pretty manner and provoked a few more reactions that way. at least played with the convention instead of trotting it out and provoking the regular "objectify women - ah how original" reactions.

the Strokes CD cover woman needed to eat a few more cheeseburgers. eeeek angles! no good no good. safe happy hips place, safe happy hips ...

Thinking of flesh on album covers, Daniel Lanois (most famous as the producer of U2 and Bob Dylan) had an album For the Love of Wynona with this skinniest skinniest naked girl on it holding a dagger. The album is quite cool in an offbeat way, but the cover raises a lot of eyebrows. It's not so much sexy as scary. The photograph is actually from a moderately reknowned photographer (ie I found it in a book in the public library). The album is pretty cool though.

do you guys not know that it's actually a man on that Strokes CD cover?

I dunno if this is what they were aiming for - but there's a lot of music (pop anyway) with clips by Britney, Aguilera, Lil' KIm, Kandi etc which are more sex than music. Perhaps the implication of a semi naked lady and the statement sex = music is that some of today's modern musicians/singers ARE just models. Really young girls thus aspiring to be really hot, instead of really talented.

Who knows - but the nipples on page three combined with my coffee did 'perk' me up a bit.

I like it!

same.

*shrug*

So do I!!! I like the cover...

:) :) :)

you're actually a dirty bitch aren't you tiffany? not the cutsie little nymphette you project yourself as...

Are we all becoming a little too precious, kiddies? Or have people forgotten that rock 'n' roll is all about sex. That is what the phrase means, for goodness sake!! "Shake, Rattle 'n' Roll" has got nothing to do with cookin' in the kitchen ... the version that most people are familiar with is the bowdlerised version ... take a closer look at the lyrics and think sex.

As for the image on the cover itself ... I personally am not offended by it. Though I suspect my mum would be! If your magazine has an article about linkin park in it you can have a picture of them on the front. But if your magazine has articles about sex and music you cannot depict a sexy (imho) woman's figure on the cover??? Why not??? Though for balance we might have to add a hunk for the ladies to admire. And I don't want to hear any rubbish about this being porn ... it is not! Not even close. If RIU had put a photo of the Venus de Milo on the front would we see any outcry? It is after all the depiction of a woman's naked torso.

i don't find it offensive, just stupid. music = sex? i don't think so. what a narrow minded statement - which is why i still think (hope?) that its a piss take.

"pop music = sex" would be more truthful.

the cover definately works though. makes me want to go read the new RIU issue to see if the content is as stupid as whats on the front.

How tired has the whole sex-issue concept become? It's hardly cutting edge or daring - just copying what they do overseas "a day late and a dollar short" as Peter Jackson might say.

Stupid? Maybe.

Tired? Definitely

//"pop music = sex"?

Hardly, though "they" do use sex to sell pop music, along with heaps of other merchandise ...

pop music = onanism is probably closer to the truth.

rock 'n' roll = sex ... it is what it means.
soul = sex ...
funk = sex ...
jazz = sex ... there is a common thread here ... do you see it?

sex = $$$

// there is a common thread here ... do you see it?

.... people are obsessed with sex?

//.... people are obsessed with sex?

Nope, that's not it. Consider the origin of the types of music that I have listed. And the = sign is perhaps not exactly the right symbol.

So which is it? A sexy woman's figure representing the sex in music, or merely a woman's naked torso?

// Are we all becoming a little too precious, kiddies? Or have people forgotten that rock 'n' roll is all about sex.

i wasn't commenting on the naked chick....its just a shit photo.

I mean "music=sex" what does the chick on the cover have to do with music?,....that old cover last year with a naked Julia deans on it would have been a better angle......or maybe the chick on the cover wearing underwear with some "rock'n'roll" type slogan.......how about a photo of a real "groupie" looking chick on the cover flashing her tits for a band(whcih are covered by the RIU type).......how about some "snoop dogg type character on a throne surronded by a harem of naked sluts.......shit there are heaps of ideas melding "music/sex" whcih could have been used.......

It just looks like a cheap FHM rip off....sorry scott and crew.

I agree. The cover isn't offensive, the photo just sucks. It's completely unflattering, and if a photo of me half naked for the cover of a magazine had come out that crap, I'd be having a word with the photographer. It'd be interesting to know who the chick is ...

//It just looks like a cheap FHM rip off

Thats what I thought when I first saw it, I wouldn't be surprised if they got that photo from them.

yeah i wouldn't to amazed either, you could but the FHM letters on it instead of Rip it Up and people would be fooled

Well, one thing they've done is get themselves offside with school librarians. The word on the library listserv is that quite a few schools have skipped purchasing this particular issue (or, if they're subscribing, it's more than likely just ended up in the staff room), and are intending to ask Satellite Media what the story is with regards to the 'sex' content of future issues.

NOTHING worse then an angry female school librarian....seriously.

I was just about to post, I've noticed at my school it hasn't appeared on shelves yet (prob 'cos of cover) so I guess I won't get to read it, it's not as if I'm paying for such a crap mag. (Although, I did steal the TLBT & St Lucy articles ;-) )

Please say Steal is another word for Photocopy

//Although i did steal the TLBT & St Lucy articles

hahahahaha
choice one Mega! Ripping the system, awesome!

Hehe... Yeah, literally ripping too.

"The magazines called Rip It Up, I was just ripping it up. You gotta problem with that?"

Hahaha, I was talking to one of my contacts in a high place in the library system to see if the undisplaryed RIU was somewhere about so I could.. err.. 'photocopy' an article from it. Apparently it was literally shredded as it was "Smut from cover to cover."

sheesh! That's a bit excessive... I was surprised at how tame it was - they label it a "sex issue" because they have interviews with Christina Aguilera, the White Stripes, Marilyn Manson and Carly Binding...

Does anyone else spot the flaw in that reasoning?

Everyones been talking about the cover of the new RIU for a while now, so I thought I would check it out,
after reading it in the shop I found that to my amazment, there was an article on The Incisions and I was even mentioned in the article (i sang with them occasionally) ......
As I am a poor band photographer, I cannot afford to buy a copy, so if there's anybody who has the mag and doesn't want the article on The Incisions, can you please let me have it? I can pay for postage. Thankyou :-D melsphotos@hotmail.com

illl give it to you this weekend when i see you or ill get someone to pass it on!
