The Shrugs rule.
Go to their web site and listen to their music.
If they come to your town, go and see them play.
If they're not your new favourite band, they should be.
he does indeed. he really needed a foldback monitor to put his foot up onto, for the full effect.
And I didn't actually think they were *that* bad -- it's just after having been exposed to the datsuns and d4 over the last couple of months, other rock'n'roll bands start to pale in comparison.
and if that bass player spent more time playing his axe instead of pointing at the crowd (or his guitar player), he might not have fluffed so many notes. ;)
I'm guessing that Devil Rider meant "shoe-gazing saddo songs", but somehow "show gazing sado songs" sounds like a really good way to describe the Shrugs.
Ok, it's after 4.00 am. I am sleep deprived but I've just come up with a definition for "show gazing sado songs"
show gazing - it's like the opposite of shoe-gazing. Instead of being all mopey-arse and looking down, it's about looking up and checking out the show, paying attention to the rest of the band and the audience.
sado - yes, as in sadism, as in of or relation to the writings of the Marquis de Sade (FuN FaCT: "Cannonball" by The Breeders is about him), as in gaining sexual pleasure from the pain and suffering of others.
songs - I'm not sure how this relates to the Shrugs (ha ha ha ho ho ho).
Show gazing sado songs are cooler than nu metal, but not as cool as European pesudo-lesbo pop.
oh wow...oops..this was ages ago...yeah i meant shoe...my spelling is real bad sometimes...i type too fast....ummm but i like your definition of my fuck up robyn. dfd sthetshx ddhdqrre
Our new drummer is natalie mckelvey. She is a very good drummer. You may have seen/heard her with wonderbug. We also have a new bass player. His name is gordon bassett. He needs no introduction if you had anything to do with contact 89fm or if you have seen the hollow grinders or nodrog.
Our next show will be in Hamilton at altitude on the 9th of may, at the 0.1 compilation release party. then we are hoping to get down to wellington for die dj die. that's if nato still wants us...nate, mate?
well, if the drummer left, and the bassist left, and all that is left is the guy that can't sing, then that kinda means the band broke up. Man, some people like splitting straws on this forum. Looks like an act of desperation pulling two new people into a band so quickly - what happens to the songs in that case? Theres no way that dynamics can be imitated in the same way, I would presume that it is difficult to find musicians even remotely similar to the last bassist and drummer, who were both truly one of a kind. I'll be interested to see if they come down to Welly again, and whether they're worth watching. I doubt it somehow - it'll be hard to regain that kind of magic. Have you noticed they have a stagemum at all their gigs?
weird... 2 people make sarky comments about the drummer leaving, that also have a dig at the singer, within minutes of each other, and they both signed up about 3 minutes before they posted... quelle coincidence! of course, one of them lives in wellington, so they can't possibly be the same person...
well, no they can't actually. I've been on this group for fucking ages, except my old hotmail account is out of use now so I re-registered under a different address just last night. I like The Shrugs, don't get me wrong. I just think, if a band is going to undergo a dramatic change, its slightly misleading to keep the same name. If I see them again, I won't be seeing The Shrugs. I'll be seeing a guy who used to be in The Shrugs, with 2 other people I've never heard of. Are you the lead singer BoomBoom? Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you if you are. Its just one of those things. Anyway, like I say, I'll be interested to see if I still like them at Die DJ Die.
its like the chills or the fall dude... if its geoff's voice and geoff's songs, its the Shrugs. Yeah, there was a good rhythm section going there for a bit, but it wasnt the first and the new one wont be the last. c'est la vie.
yeah, unfortunaely DDD has been scaled back, so who knows when we will playin wellington again. don't worry, grinning dog, i'm not insulted! Of course the Shrugs won't be the same, but I always hoped that we wouldn't be the same from night to night even if the members stayed the same. The reason new members were drafted in so quick is that we had a show to play! We kept the same name just because i like it. i'm glad that you sensed some magic from that rhythm section, they are both good musicians who you will not have heard the last of. anyway, the shrugs have 'evolved'. you might like us more, you might like us less. i'm certainly happy with the direction we have taken, and as they say, if you don't change, you die (or at least turn into AC/DC)
One of my favourite bands is the Breeders. The current line-up of the Breeders has only one person who was in the original 1991 Breeders line-up, but that doesn't matter because that person is Kim Deal who is the major creative force behind the Breeders.
The new line-up of the Shrugs will be different, but because The Guy Who Can(n't) Sing is so incredibly talented, and is indeed the major creative force behind the Shrugs, I think the band's essence will remain. Well, that's what I'm hoping.
Dammit, I was planning on driving down to Hammo to see the Shrugs play tonight, but my car is still at the panelbeaters so I won't be able to make it!
good to see Mr Shrug is keeping an eye on this website and contributing! But Boomboom, I disagree with you. Unless Mr Shrug wrote the rhythm section of each song, then I would guess the other two were contributers. A band is a collenctive. You can't say that person with just a melody and some words owns those songs, unless you think of a band as one guy with some session musos. And The Shrugs looked like more than that to me. They were actually the best thing I've seen in years. It will be a sad loss if that magic can't be recaptured, but fingers crossed it can, and I might even make the trip to Hamilton some time to check them out - sad about DIE DJ DIE but another time perhaps? Do you guys plan to play Valve again? Anyway, Good Luck.
PS Boomboom, if you aren't Geoff, and I'm presuming you're not in the band, then why do you have such vested interest in The Shrugs? Hoping they'll do like The Datsuns?? :)
precisely. i am the shrugs' evil and usettlingly camp svengali. i sell them cheap sleeping pills, medicinal herbs and looted iraqi atifacts. if they "do like the dastuns", then i'll have some mates i can congratulate for their commercial achievements without having to bite my tongue about their artistic ones. that would be cool. actually, you are closer to the truth than you realise. gosh, how mysterious i am being. how unsettlingly camp of me.
The band imploded, then Geoff stole our drummer to make it go again. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. This is like the fourth line up in 3 years, there was originally Geoff, Richey and Neil, Then Geoff/Chris/Neil, then Geoff/Chris/Rob (the classic i suppose) and now its Geoff/Gordon/Natalie.
The Shrugs must issue an apology to anyone who has turned up to a show recently, and found out that there is no show. Blame bronchial pneumonia, and the management of Harkers Bar. The good news is that we will be playing on Saturday the 19th at Ward Lane, with Assassin (ex ho-dogs, ex-cobra?), the Hollow Grinders, and Bloom.
ummm - due to unforseen circumstances regarding my employment situation and the unavailablity of one of the bands planned for tomorrow evening - the show was postponed until later in the year - unless somebody else wants to set it up for a date before then. august 8th was just one of the dates that was put forward for an alternative - sorry again - probably should have posted this a while back....
One more use for the nzmusic forums: a good way of letting bands know whether their shows have been cancelled!
The show on Saturday was fun. This lineup's first encore! But what exactly, dear boom boom, do we own?
What we can take from this is that any Shrugs gig can be cancelled at any time. In other words, when they are playing - GO AND SEE THEM. Dont hold out for the later gig with the cool auckland bands, cos it might not happen.
The Shrugs really need to get back down to Wellington pronto like, cos Active is rocking the new "single" right now. Even campy old Miles the house music guy seems to like this one...
