FROM THE CHANNEL Z PRESS RELEASE
From next week, a fresh young voice joins the Channel Z breakfast team. In fact, it's the youngest voice in New Zealand radio history. Jake Dubber, 10 years old joins James Coleman from 6am Monday.
Jake, whose father is AUT radio lecturer Andrew Dubber, has been hosting radio shows since he was six. "I used to do shows with Dad's students, and sometimes some stuff on the Havoc breakfast show on bFM. I was on Juice TV for a while too, so I'm kind of used to it."
Coleman says that such a young show host is actually not that uncommon internationally. "On similar formats in the US, they've been doing the 'big brother / little brother' routine for a few years now with quite a lot of success. We thought we'd give it a go here. And let's face it - I'm in my mid-thirties. Jake's much closer to our target audience than I am."
Criticism that such an early start will be detrimental to a child's welfare are brushed off by the station. CanWest CEO Brent Impey explained, "It's not all that different from a paper run. Only you get less wet on rainy days - and the pay is much better."
Jake is looking forward to the challenge, but is disappointed that he has to leave at 8.30am and not stay till the end of the show at nine. "School starts at 9 o'clock, and it was either start on time or do extra homework. No way..." he laughs.
Coleman says he's looking forward to the new dynamic of the show. "I've known Jake through his Dad for a couple of years now, and we get on really well. I am going to have to cut down on my swearing in the studio now though."
Jake lists his favourite bands as Pluto, Pacifier and the Sex Pistols. "I listen to Channel Z all the time anyway," he says, "though I can only get it upstairs in my bedroom at the moment."
The new Coleman and Dubber breakfast show starts on Channel Z on Monday.

ahaha! maybe not. It was posted by Paul Kennedy, who's the editor of Median Strip (the nz radio newsletter thing), and who's not in anyway connected to Channel Z. Haven't checked their website.

Andrew Dubber is a real person and really does work at AUT. He even has a blog.
However, the press release seems like AFD joke, having a nice dig at Coleman's age.

Andrew Dubber does have a son called Jake who has been doing radio shows for years. Jake is a huge Pacifier fan, and is responsible for mis-hearing "My Mind's Sedate" as "Marmite City". I know this because I was once a student of Andrew's and Jake did shows on Static (our student station at AUT). Don't know whether this makes it all true, but at least some of the info is correct.

Here's the truth behind the April 1 ...
Here's the truth behind the April 1 Channel Z press release (from Andrew Dubber)
> Jake Dubber, 10 years old
True. He is 10.
> Jake, whose father is AUT radio lecturer Andrew Dubber,
> has been hosting radio shows since he was six.
Also true.
> "I used to do shows with Dad's students...
True.
> ...and sometimes some stuff on the Havoc breakfast
> show on bFM
The Wire once, and the Havoc TV show, but not breakfast - so that one's not
true.
> I was on Juice TV for a while too
True.
> Coleman: "I'm in my mid-thirties. Jake's much closer to our
> target audience than I am."
Mostly true.
> Jake lists his favourite bands as Pluto, Pacifier and the Sex
> Pistols.
Absolutely true - though he prefers Shihad albums to the Pacifier one.
> I listen to Channel Z all the time anyway," he says,
> "though I can only get it upstairs in my bedroom at
> the moment."
Not true. We can't get Channel Z at all. Jake listens to Hauraki, bFM and
'The Monday Night Cooking Class' on George (until Malcolm in the Middle
comes on TV - you lose him at 7.30, Simon).
He also tries to catch Curious Questions on Nat Rad on a Saturday morning
whenever possible, and he listens to the Lord of the Rings dramatisation
when we remember. Still haven't managed to get him into jazz - and I suspect
him of listening to 'The Main Ingredient' show on bFM (opposite my George
slot) when left unsupervised. He has been caught listening to Barry Jenkin
after lights out on a Sunday.
> The new Coleman and Dubber breakfast show starts
> on Channel Z on Monday.
Not, of course, true at all. In fact, Jake wants to be a scientist, a
cartoonist, an explorer, a rock drummer and a comedian. Radio host isn't
even on the list.
As you were.
Cheers,
Dubber
