Well, I actually felt sorry for the drum kit, as Gary Sullivan bashed the crap out of them. Alister Parker was amazing to watch - had the sizable crowd in the palm of his hand for the whole show.
They played some Bailterspace songs and a couple of new ones (written that afternoon apparently) that were very cool. It was a pretty short set, but goddamn it was good. You would have loved it. They ended the set with a huge and soaring version of X.
my favourite Bailterspace song ... very jealous. very keen to see Gary S. play too. but great to know Alister is still twanging the strings at least somewhere, and there are ear-witnesses.
I have to ask the obvious questions:
is this a one off gig?
is there going to be an Alistair Parker release?
is Bailter Space still an entity (i mean they will eternally be one, but in terms of new music)?
and why the fuxk do i live in London when i miss out on shit like this?
Can anyone please give any information about the status of Bailter Space, i heard rumours about some sort of release, but their website has been down for a while now, i hope it's not the end, they are truly the greatest band to have ever played music, pioneers and astronauts, not a week release to their name.
Deffinitly not a weak release indeed. well solar 3 is a little dissapointing.
Pre solar3. I dont believe they had one bad song. With that consistancy they are the greatest band this country has ever seen. I really get fucked off at morons who only know wammo. The spectrum they have is beautiful. i love them.
where was everybody last night? don't give me this weak "sunday" excuse. I was embarrassed to be a wellingtonian last night.
Beautiful intimate performance for those of us sensible enough to go and watch.
that was weird wasn't it? it was kinda nice though, in that I felt spoilt that we were the only ones there. (and I hope I didn't thin the 'crowd' out too much by leaving early -- 5.30am start and all...)
i was feeling pretty tired on sunday and couldnt really be bothered going. so i went to the market and bought some steak and v. i cooked my steak up, maybe a little rare. i think there would have been blood running out if it wasnt still frozen in the middle. that made me want to go out even less.
so i went out.
i got to bodega and it was empty and not starting for a while.
so i went home. and increased the level of caffiene.
and again i went out.
got back to the place and found a nice comfortable seat to sit with my beer. a burning candle looks wicked through a half empty glass of beer.
rawer i think might have played a kinda similar set to last time i saw them. but it sounded better. they played like they didnt care what anyone thought. thats worth something. i like the drumming.
i dont really know much bailter space so i dont know how many of their songs were played and how many were other songs. but i was stoked to hear three songs that i knew. they sounded a lot different live. not just in the way things always sound better live, but they had a very different feeling. i dont know whether that is because of the other two people or something else. the drummer was good. i felt the bass drum rather than hearing it.
it took until about the encore for most people to start dancing, except for this dude who had a head like a metronome, and some chick who kept invading my personal space. i think the first song in the encore was one they had played earlier, but it was a good song and worthy of being played twice. the last song was one of my favourites. i have no idea what it was.
in the end i thought the gig was suited to a sunday night. there were no munters there who just turned up because there was a show on. it had a good vibe. and it felt ok to be there by myself.
then i went home and slept. i had my first dream in months. i was at a gig by myself, and some dude came up behind me and kinda grabbed me and pulled me up the front. then he turned me round, and he had somehow sliced up my forehead. then he put a cloth with something like chloroform over my face hardy boys style and i crumpled on the floor.
Yeah - that gig was the best. Much played of Wammo which is kinda surprising given that most people I've read have called thier least favourite BSpace LP - oh well - whose arguing? I just feel lucky to have been there - I figured I'd probaby never see Bailterspace (or part thereof) live.
Some stunning renditions - the classic beautiful/terrifying contrast in all the songs - Damn! that was a treat....and when the band opened up into "X" at the end I was damn near about to cry like a baby. No recording will get you that kind of huge sound and impact. Magic.
it was choice. i was disappointed by the reaction of the (small) crowd- got a bit of an "i'm too cool to react at at all to this fucking incredible music" vibe. i think i must have been the "dude with a head like a metronome"- to be honest i was restraining myself not to spazz on the floor when the hi-hat was turned up on the mixing desk. it was fucking awesome. rawer were good too.
well, my two cents, first of all backing up blink on the where the fuck was everyone. on the bright side, made me feel better about the turn out my band got 2 weeks previous, but we aint fucking alister parker, responsible for fronting the best band this country has produced .in my narrow world view, wellington, as much as anywhere in the world obviously, is full of people that have appreciated this man's contribution to music and yes it was sunday and yes it wasn't really bailterspace but fucking hell - what the fuck was possibly on TV that was better? very disappointing.
anyway, the gig - two minds about it really - on the bright side, that was the only time i'll get to see something like grader spader live, and even going back to the vortura stuff, probably the only chance i'll get to see it. gary and noel (both nz music icons in their own right) played well and shared an obvious love for the material - even if they had to watch alister pretty carefully for his reinterpretations of the changes! on the low side, yeah sure it would have been better to see the real band which gave it a teensy bit of a has-been vibe. for all that i'm sure as hell glad i went and shook the man's hand, thanked him for the music, and he was genuinely appreciative of the people that had made the effort to come out.
Finally, i was rapt for the rawer guys cos i know how much bailterspace means to andrew and that he's never seen them live - it must be an incredible feeling to play with your hero in the room - and for the record, alister was definitely nodding along in places, i kept checking!!! :o)
