Well I think it's gotta come down to a one or two track play off in this situation. If you got tapes or mp3s of any of their tracks put your favourtie few in the stereo, turn em up full boar and make up you mind. In Love vs Exit To The City maybe.
Gotta be the D4 ... it's a really good reflection of what they're like live with some cool writing and great covers (how can you go wrong having Guitar Wolf , Johnny Thunders and Scavengers songs?)
The Datsuns, for me anyway, put out a fairly weak album that fails to capture much of their incredible live presence and misses two of my fave datsuns songs "Transistor" and "SuperGyration" ... it does have "Harmonic Generator" and "Lady" but a lot of stuff that sounds too close to bad 80's hair metal for my liking ... :)
If we were talking about choosing a gig to go to I'd say Datsuns hands down - but the albums... I dunno...
Vocoder - for me the fact that the best songs on the D4 album are the covers (and to me they are, no question) is one thing that makes me a bit iffy about the D4 (though they're great songs).
And I gotta admit, I was hanging out for the Datsuns' album to include Hong Kong Fury.
I'm gonna say D4. And it's even better on vinyl. I got a Party on 45 when I bought the album. The extra bass really makes it. Although the extra bass on vinyl would probably do the Datsuns a world of good as well.
The Datsuns. No question. Then again D4 don't take my fancy. From the singles Harmonic Generator, Lady and In Love seem its promising its gotta be better than the D4. And plus you get a free sticker with The Datsuns album. Hope that helps.
why dont you go straight to the source of all their inspiration and buy Led Zep - Houses of the holy??... If your into that shit...cool. I feel there is way more NZ talent that deserves your $40...bands that actually have depth to their message. Personal choice... Mother Guru (Self-Titled). "The Datsuns..?? shouldn't have sold out to KFC!
