Mother Guru, 1QA, Autozamm, Picture gig review 1/3

this is my VERY late review, enjoy...

Walking through town (Wellington) on a mild Saturday night, I saw a mud-splattered four wheel drive. Now in the city, this is a VERY odd thing to see, what with the huge number of four wheel drives, which never see let alone drive on dirt, seemed quite strange to see a fully mud splattered car... That was the beginning of a great night, I got on the bus to go to indigo, when some random lady just gave me her bus ticket!!! That made my night, I was so stoked, I ended up giving it to a mate who I met on the bus as well, good bless all you generous Wellingtonians. It’s inspired me to try be generous when I can be.
Arriving at Indigo around nineish, I found no door man (fifteen minutes late I was told) three punters and Mother Guru “Bugger this” I said to myself and headed over to Blinks place, to see if that was more interesting…
The Boys from Autozamm and 1QA were already there, so we sat around, swearing and commenting on things, and generally just have a laid back time, I found out a band called picture were playing “Who the Fuck are picture???” being the catchword of the night.
An extra band, one hour behind, the prosects of getting home before one o’clock did not look promising. But I got stuck in.

Picture were alright, I was already biased against them for being the fourth band, so it took a while before I started listening to them, I got a tool/metal feel coming from them, they seemed to be finding their style.

I left half way through Picture’s set and sat around, had a beer and socialised, comments seemed to be mainly bout peoples supposed sexuality, so I was quite happy to leave and listen to Autozamm. From the start they impressed me, very energetic, all over the place. They were obviously enjoying themselves. I won’t even go into Canvas comparisons ;).
Autozamm were loud and fast, just how I like it, they went straight into their set, but it took a few songs before it felt like they were really into it, day to day being the song where they “stepped up”. I tried to stay back and be objective, but I just couldn’t. I was right up front with about five other people and we were having a great time, now I don’t like unstuck and I still don’t. It’s better live, but I think there are stronger songs in Autozamm’s play-list.
All in all I was impressed by how good Autozamm were, I’d definitely see them again, if you see a show with Autozamm in it, go see them for yourself!!!

Now I’ve seen 1QA live about three times and every time I see them, they get better, it took a while for a good crowd to form for 1QA and in that time I managed to lose one of my ear plugs, not good, so I was in for a 1QA sound assault.
What struck me about 1QA was how tight they were, goin straight into their monster single “Ready to Rock” they were rockin’ from the word go!!! I always enjoy seeing the string section getting into it, Josh/Jon screaming away and Phil singing, like a bat outta hell. I wrote down something about corny jokes, but I can’t remember what they said, so I assume they made crap jokes during songs, worth it though.
I heard someone shout out “Shihad try-hards” I think that night, they were better than the Pacifier I saw at Wellington, which is quite a complement, coming from me.
“Why aren’t they big???” I thought to myself, compared to what I’ve heard on the radio, they are so much better than anything on the airwaves. I guess it comes down to lack of a big label backing them, which is sad, cause they could be so big.
Anyway they rocked, the growing crowd loved them, they did all the rock star poses and facials, I’ve come to expect. To end their slot, they pushed over some amps and smacked around the mic stand, an awesome show…

Next up were Mother Guru.
They had a crowd of about sixty, to a hundred people already there, at one am, waiting for them, they went straight into it!!!
I’ve seen them once before and they were awesome that night, I always love seeing Darryl in full flight, dreds flying, guitar flowing, he was just full of energy…
They have a huge stage presence, I guess its because they have played together so long, they just know each other so well, this showed, in their confidence and just how tight they were. A level of manic intensity, which I don’t see very often, seemed to posses them.
Their set sped through and before I knew it they were on their last song, just Darryl and Tama (the drummer) goin at it like maniacs… an awesome vibe really.
Now before you go thinking this is a biased review, I’m not a fan of Mother Guru, I don’t enjoy their music, but they are more than just music, it’s something else, something I can’t describe, something great. I’ll leave you with this quote by Josh, the bassist of Mother Guru

//MOTHER GURU is my life, love and passion, this is why when you see me, Daz, Tama and Mo on stage, 4 consciousness' turn into an omnipotent energy of wisdom, passion and love for you, the people we feed off//

Forums: NZ Music,

Nice Jon.
Enjoyed the //comments seemed to be mainly bout peoples supposed sexuality

im sure blink was somewhere in the vicinity

And when are we going to get somesort of feed back re jimi does the D? or jimi lives to tell the tale of "O Week"

Well aka it's still going on! haha nah just I'm kinda flat out. I'm thinking I'll write a review when I come home for Easter. So much to say though!!!

Did ya hear who MG dedicated a song to? ;) At a packed Town Hall no less.

he bloody wasn't there, slacker!!!
it was a good night though :D

i'll be at the bodega gig April 5th....i was too busy to go to the indigo gig. I am looking very forward to it.

// I'm kinda flat out

please tell me this is because you are drunk all the time. there is no alternative.

//Did ya hear who MG dedicated a song to? ;) At a packed Town Hall no less
Um how the hell would I know jimi seeing NO ONE HAS POSTED about it??????
But I do know who had a song dedicated to them at a packed Indigo by Two Lane Black Top :P :P :P

Carl yes that is the reason. how was your musical trip to Welly aka?

wicked Jon, As for me i love Mother Gurus music just as much as i could sit there with no sound and just watch them

Mother Guru with the sound off????? That would worse than going to a gig of theirs and wearing a blindfold.

yeah but i was trying to relate to Jon in the fact that he doesn't like the music, but he still loved to watch the show, i am more fortunate than that because i love the music, i listen to the cd everyday, but i also love watching them while i listen. I love watching Daz's dreads flying through the air at full speed, long enough to take someones eye out, and i love the way he moves when he's playing his guitar - so sexy and so full of energy, i love watching Tama when they're jamming and he goes off till you almost cant see his arms they're moving so fast and then he explodes, but then brings it down nicely. I love watching Mo when he does all those crazy martial art kinda moves and he gets the crowd going and if you look around you most of the people are dancing like him, And Josh is always good to look at even if he didn't have a base in his hands, he's got some pretty mean tattoo's and peircings going on there, especially tattoos!...
All in all they're four of the sexiest guys in NZ Music that i love to watch and listen to.

ummm this this is hard to explain, i tried with aka but i didn't get far...

i don't HATE them, but they're not my fav band, the music is not my scene, but there is MANY MANY worse bands/groups sound wise than mother guru...
its a weird love/hate relationship aye..
i can't even describe it :S

how about you say, you appreciate their musical ability and talent as musicians but it's not your musical style preference. or you could jsut say it's not your cup of tea.

so like theyre "earl grey" and he likes "dilmah"

Dilmah make a fine Earl Grey Blend. :P :P :P

JJ, I was not picking on you, nor was I personally offended, I was just trying to help you find the lanuage to define....
I like the way that AchillesHeel put it

the ceylon supreme is good as well. but mostly I drink their earl grey.

maybe you should start a 'tea' forum aka....

then we all have to make tea for her! ah haha

Y, you silly boy - Earl Grey is a TYPE of tea, Dilmah is a BRAND! Tsk tsk, you should know better. Now hand over the Audioslave ticket.

well um ... yeah, whoops is all i can say

and dr, i sense a demanding tone in your voice.

quick y hand the ticket over to me before she gets it!

she'd shread me to pieces (well at least attempt to) if i did that. to bad you not in auckland :P

*cellotapes tickets to forehead*

*whispers to y* photocopy it and give Dr Gymkhana the fake hehehe

even though i could do that, i don;t think i'd be that stink to someone lol

I heard them dedicate that song to you Insipid boys Jimi, that was cool - Nelson representing

Fuck yeah. whitepony do I know you?

Mother Guru on Space
Rather sad that they only got to do one song, and jimi you will be happy to know it was Vocyphorous.
As a person who has seen alot of Mother Guru over the last few years, althought it was a good proformance, somethingwas lostdue to translation on to television.
The need to use closeups, with it's emphasis on the singer and cut aways to other bands members brakes the band into its parts, distorting the unity and harmony of Mother Guru, the dynamic that has fans gasps for air and impresses even non fans.
The sound was as good and althought Mo's voice was clean and clear, it seemed to be lacking some power and the vibrato that usually sends a chill up my spine was almost missing.
As someone else said on their Artist Page, ...... "Mother Guru were phat on Space! But nothing compares to seeing them play live, so if you get the chance to, definitly go and experience them for yourself. ...Jax"

Yeah, we've met several times

blurgh..... email me hayja603@student.otago.ac.nz. I'm very curious.

And yes, MG were phaaaaaaat. But what band wouldn't be inspired by that night?

Wasn't that Dunedin show the phattest you've ever seen Mother Guru

GIG REVIEW - Jon Jr.

I Went along to this show and think that you have written a very good review.

One of my girlfriends in Auckland told me that she went along to the Mother Guru concert at the Kings Arms. She told me that everyone who played was amazing but the crowd were just absolutly horrible. Dead silence after brief applauding.

I believe their is huge hole in the Auckland music scene. Its "commercial" or go home.
