I don't see any harm in all these best ...
I don't see any harm in all these best of lists having a high international content. It'd be a bit draconian to demand everyone talk about nz music exclusively (or introduce a quota system, ha!), just for the sake of keeping the site 'pure'.
I think the site is really for nz music fans, most of whom are going to be fans of all sorts of other music as well. There's no point going off to some other site to discuss your g'n'r addiction with some actual g'n'r nutters when you know you're going to find some like-minded (and not so like-minded) individuals here you can get a discussion going with.
And, that's what the Bar is for after all, all the non-nz music stuff. Hell, if I couldn't wax lyrical about the Super 12 or Cricket World Cup, rant on about my position on Iraq, post links to dodgy Engrish sites, or discuss the extraction of my wisdom teeth on these forums, then, well, it'd be a lesser site for it (well, maybe not -- I enjoy reading other people's non-nz music discussions, anyway).
It's a wee community, innit? Brought together by our love of nz music, but not necessarily limited to that as our only topic of discussion. I like it that way. Long may it last.
Well said. Generally, THE BAR forum ...
Well said.
Generally, THE BAR forum was launched to deal with dicussion topics that were not strictly about NZ music. The topics in the bar do not appear in the 'latest posts areas' featured throughout the site so in many ways it's not being pushed to the average site visitor.
However, I think its highly appropriate to be talking about the full range of personal cultures that any fan of music in New Zealand may have developed, including International acts etc etc. I think the bar metaphor works well - in real life: I see friends at a bar, we enjoy the local music scene but more often than not the flavour of conversation is about everything we observe in all cultures around us - local and global.
In fact I think people have not spoken enough lately about one of the key reasons NZ music is doing well ... that is, we have been able to observe and asssimilate both major masses of the music world - Europe and America into the weave of our local flavours. The balance is good and bad sometimes, but it is a key part of creativity here in NZ.
I tend to think that knowing more about ...
I tend to think that knowing more about people than just their views on nz music also gives a more three dimensional perspective, and can you give you a deeper understanding of where their views are coming from.
And, well, it's fun ...
I'm not for one moment suggesting that ...
I'm not for one moment suggesting that we talk exclusively about NZ Music ... I was just wondering how others see this whole site. Personally I view it as a site for New Zealanders who are fans of music in general. (Though in truth is seems to focus solely on pop/rock in all their various guises. And that is probably another topic for the Bar) It certainly has provided me with some food for thought (and I'm not just talking about Heather's recent "let them eat cake" topic)
And the less said about the World Cup Cricket shambles the better ... as a selector I think Sir Richard Hadlee makes a damn fine case for the theory that states that just cos you could play the game doesn't mean you can coach/select. Mark Richardson should have been taken to open. Full Stop!!
the interest in NZ music for me comes ...
the interest in NZ music for me comes from this site, i think i would just be a 'fan of NZ music' rather than a 'NZ music fan' if it wasn't for the .com thats on the end of those three words [NZM that is]. I would know jack shit about nz music if this wasn't around, their really isnt a nz music info source better than this place.
I like the fact that I can pretty much decide whether i want to go out and see a band in real life from what i learn on here from other punters sharing their views and opinions.
I also find it a lot easier to say what i really think in these forums, I like the fact that I can say dumb stuff knowing that i'm not going to chased down the road having tomatos thrown at me because of it...[well at least i hope not]

I was more inclined to thinking that I don't spend my weekend as locked in front of a computer as I am in the week (which is kind of the corollary of the above)

I was actually ribbing someone else. I still fondly remember your white collar target spoof (see link below). That was a classic post.
//limegreen, what are you doing on a non-work related site?
I could make a viable argument about why I'm reading it (although oddly, slightly less about why I'm posting).
However, I have always checked the proxy logs each month to ensure I'm not doing anything too noticeable (until they were passworded. I'm not sure if god noticed me, or whether they were just on a security bender).
Hmmm. Thinking of network traffic, a friend of mine who admisters a couple of linux boxes elsewhere in the system set up a webcam on one. It was refreshing to a web server ridiculously often (more than once per second) on one of the other ones, and if you were viewing the webpage concerned, it was refreshing every 5s. His mother left her browser open on that page for an afternoon...

aha! cheers mate. Friday afternoon posting mayhem at its best. Actually made me guffaw, as opposed to the usual internal cringe when I re-read, so that's a good sign. That was a hell of a thread actually.
// ...network traffic...
I reckon I'd be well down the list of offenders at this place. You can wander around work here and see people streaming video & radio; there's FTP coming and going 24 hours a day (sending colossal amounts of data); automated log transfers to and from my machine; you name it, we're doing it, and a lot of it. My interwebbing news, music, blog and random (usually nz music inspired) 'fun' sites is but a drop in the ocean.

I remember a couple of years ago reading about the beowulf cluster running the weather simulations, and figured that there was some fairly 'big' stuff going down.
This network is in the top 10 in terms of screen numbers, but they don't like too much external traffic ... so no streaming media : (
I am worried that a number of my favourite sites rank highly in the proxy stats (for my sub-lan)

I'm with Jennio. This site has definately increased my interest in & support for NZ music. I know there are some people who seem to mostly use this site for social reasons ignoring NZ music, but if that bothers you too much, ignore them. It's easy to not read the bar.
The community benefits are great here. I've got free and/or cheap and/or signed CDs because of NZM. I can get free travel & accomodation & food. I'll stop being shallow now & say that's 'cos I've met some really awesome friends here.

NZ Music... What's it for?
I needed to research a NZ Band last year and my adventures took me here. I thought I knew quite a bit about NZ music but after a few hours of 'Lurking' it showed me what I've been missing out on. Its a great site that has turned me into a NZ Music fan, making me buy more NZ stuff than I have ever done so before... There is some good info about NZ Artists and you can see how NZs'creativity has grown over the years, I could have never have understood that if I never made it here.
I still lurk, and I enjoy the fact that I can hear stuff here that might have never reached my ears in the first place.
The people are interesting, the forums are a crack up.
To me NZ Music.com is for lovers of music.
Oh yeah, NZMusic.com help me get laid last year... For that I thank you.

i like this site for both reasons, i love telling people about Mother Guru, since i first saw there live show a little over a year ago i think everyone in NZ needs to see them to know NZ has one of the best live rock bands in the world, well this is my opinion and that of most people who i know who frequent there live shows. But i also love learning about other NZ music from other NZ musers because i live in Nelson and don't get to see much of it. Also i love talking to anyone about other international bands because it's all i'm really interested in, and talking to someone who loves the same bands as me (near or far) gives me warm fuzzies
