Wisdom Teeth

Apparently, I have 'wisdom teeth' coming through. I don't know anyhting about them excpet this: they hurt like fuck.
What happens? Do they get pulled out? Do they fix thhemselves? Are they meant to be growing into the side of my mouth making it impossible to eat, speak and essentially be concious without pain?
Alright, so an internet forum about kiwi music probably isn't the best place to ask questions about dentistry, but I thought maybe some of you have had wisdom teeth out and could tell me what to expect.
Help - I'M TOO YOUNG FOR MAJOR DENTAL WORK!

Comments

yes they are meant to cause pain in most cases i think... in my mums at least.

you will require dental work if this is the case, but its pretty common dental work... never fear, they knock you out when they perform it, then after that theres meant to be some discomfort for a few days... not in my mums case though, so don't fear.

the sooner they come out the better, and coming out now means you won't have to worry about it when you're older, kind of like chicken pox, get them young.

yeah, i've had one set of my wisdom teeth out - quite unusual that they both didn't need to come out at the same time, but however ...

having only one set out meant i could just have a massive local anaesthetic (sp?) ... that in itself was pretty damned cool. my mates had to come pick me up from the Dental School where i got it done and walk me home, slowly, stopping me from giggling and harrassing strangers ...

the cool thing is going to the dentist and seeing an x-ray of the teeth. absolutely freaky - weird car-crash angles, fantastic. the operation itself is real easy and relatively quick - i say that having gone to dental school to get it done, so there were students involved. very cool.

you can hang onto them when they come out. they are massive and very impressive. there are big pits in the side of your mouth when they come out, and a few stitches that melt away after a week or so. buy lots of yoghurt, many many different flavours cos you'll get so sick of it, and be prepared to live on that and other liquids for over a week (might be more if you need both sides done).

get them done. the pain now is worse than the pain of getting them out.

Definitely get them taken care of asap. Wisdom teeth will never fix themselves. What they will do is push quite painfully out of your gums and gradually push all of your other teeth forward and out of alignment.

It isn't all that painful to have them out, considering, though I do suggest having all four done at once, instead of having two separate appointments. No need to make it worse than it has to be. In my case, they were impacted and the dentist had to break the teeth into pieces to get them out of my jaw. The first time I had them out, that is. I'm a genetic freak mutant, you see, and I had two sets of wisdom teeth. The first set of four I had out when I was 17, and the second when I was 22.

wow! 2 sets? cool! I wish I was a genetic freak...oh wait...

Anyway - I only have one tooth which is painful at the mo, but I've been told that it has a partner set to join it soon. ouch.

they are evil, they hurt, get rid of it

i got mine pulled out a few weeks after my 19th birthday, the cost was the only thing i was worried about

BTW the only thing im worried about the dentist these days is the $45 check up fee + $25 for a filling if nessecary

...i forgot to add, $70 aint good esp if your on the dole.

i got one wisdom out a few years ago, they left the other three. i got no special drugs, just some poor local. it wasnt that bad. he just pulled it out. the other three are still doing fine. so obviously im pretty wise.

im getting my wisom teeth at the moment. it hurts so bad! i need to go the dentist about it i think, i hope i dont have to have mine pulled out

get them out! i got mine out late last year, what a nightmare! it cost me about $500, you don't feel anything when they pull them out but a few hours later it hurts like hell and your face swells up and lasts about 3 days, but after that its fine. If you leave them in to long they rot and if they hurt now they won't get better. Its just one of those things in life you have to go through.

I still have three of my wisdom teeth - the only reason I got one out was because I had a cavity. I left the dentist's visit so long I figured I may as well just have it pulled. Just had a local; it was fine, but the dentist explained to me that he did it a better way than most dentists - with three little scalpelly things rather than pliers. Won't go into gory details, but it was fascinating at the time. Was just a bit woozy for a day. Hardly any swelling at all. The worst thing was the psychological impact of having a gaping hole in my gum instead of a nice big tooth.

When my wisdom teeth first came through, they didn't really hurt at all - I just started having this serious compulsion to chew things. Took a while to realise I was teething.

Yeah. All of lunch today, I was wandering in a lost state...
"I NEED food...so hungry...MUST CHEW...but oh, the PAIN....argh, must chew, chew dammit...OW!"
I settled for a bag of m&m's and a milkshake...I'm still hungry...

I had all four of mine out at once back when I was 17.

they put me under and it ruled.

mine weren't but they thought they would pull em any way.

however if you do have them out heed this warning.

DO NOT EAT NACHOS THE DAY AFTER YOU HAVE THEM OUT, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY LOOK. THAT SHIT REALLY HURT!!!!!!

I had my bottom two yanked shortly after arriving here in Wellington.

Having put up with a dull throb for about six months, I figured I might as well get it over and done with, so toddled off to the dentist for what must have been the first time in about six years. After the x-rays had been done, it was revealed to me that these wisdom teeth were 'big', and these wisdom teeth were 'deep'. It didn't sound good. I returned a week later, two shots of vodka under my belt to steady my nerves. God I hate dentists.

So they popped a couple of valium into me, which mingled nicely with the vodka, and, after a short chilling-out period on a bed in a waiting area, the pretty nurse guided me to ... the chair. There seemed to be a lot of industrial-strength hydraulic equipment at hand. And the rubber gloves and smocks donned by dentist and assistant didn't augur well (I got a bib the size of a table-cloth, which was also less than reassuring).

And then, well, out they came. In lots of little bits. My overwhelming memory was of the dentist saying, 'mmm, we'll have to cut this bit of bone out as well,' and of this colossal CRUNCH and bowel-shuddering vibration as they shattered the bit of my jawbone into which the larger of my two wisdom teeth had impacted. 'UCK!' I managed to gurgle through the blood.

A good mate was looking after me for the rest of the day, and he took me back to his place where we had a couple more vodkas, and then (I don't know how I managed this), scoffed down a few 'special' cookies (purely for the pain-killing aspect), whipped out the guitars, and launched into a three hour jam. Apparently (my memory grows hazy after the first 20 minutes or so) we were inspired, and actually wrote some songs that ended up being recorded on our next album (although I had to relearn them all the next time we played together, naturally -- "Jesus, I played that? I'm better than I thought!").

Pity about the bloodstains around his flat though. It looked like we'd sacrificed a cat.

Well, valium and cat scrifice seem to be my thing. I guess i'll enjoy this after all.

sacrifice/orifice GK?

and Noizy. That's a freakin awesome story.

GK = me?
if so:
//sacrifice/orifice?
your choice.

rrrrrrrrrr

ahhh im scared now

Mine come up and hurt like fuck for a few days but they always seem to go back down again, i don't know what's wrong with me, does anybody?

They don't always hurt when they come through, but if they do they won't fix themselves and you'll need to have them out before they cause any serious problems (abcesses and such). My bottom two came through at an angle and one had to be taken out recently. They did it under a general (cos I've had teeth pulled with local before and I nearly passed out when I saw the tooth leave my mouth, being the wuss that I am...) and my god did it hurt like hell when I woke up!
My face swelled up like a hamsters for about 4 days, I couldn't open my mouth much the following day but by the end of the week it was alright. My neck & the side of my face were bruised as well.

Normally after all that it would be fine, but cos the NHS is a pile of crap, I've been left with a nice hole in my mouth (it was supposed to heal over, it hasn't. Dentist tried restitching it, it still hasn't healed over *sighs*). So I still have the pain I had before from things touching the main nerve to my lower jaw! So it all feels a bit pointless that I had it taken out.

Oh something else to consider when having them out - you could lose all feeling to the bottom of your jaw. I did for a while, but its since come back. It's not motor sense, that's fine you'll still be able to move it and you won't look odd or anything, but you won't be able to feel your lip/lower jaw properly. But if you do go ahead and have them out the dentist should explain all of that to you (and if they don't mention it, you might want to ask them).

My top set are still up in my jaw and haven't come through. They'll probably just stay there. If they move I don't care I'm not having them out, I'd rather suffer the pain than let the NHS mess my mouth up anymore.

Aha! My last dental appointment was on the NHS as well, and I think I had the least horrible wisdom-tooth experience ever. The dentist commuted from Paris every week. I paid quite a bit more than any of my friends had quoted tho.

I reckon its English dentists, cos before I had the tooth taken out, I had a swedish dentist and he was fantastic. Best dentist I've ever had. But he left the practice and shoddy English dentist comes along and then this happens! If he'd done it, it probably would have been fine.
He had an element of mad scientist about him, but he was good.
