The truly important things in life.

I've noticed a sentiment that appears in many discussions, and seems to be one of the few things about which everyone is in agreement. It pervades and transcends all topics, music or otherwise; and every time it is mentioned, it is met with exclamations of approval. It's cake. Everyone likes cake. What kind of cake do you like?

Forums: The Bar,

So true. And pies. But the topic is cakes, so...

Hot, moist chocolate cake. One of those self-saucing numbers you that you pop in the oven. Yum.

Milo had a day with the grandparents yesterday, and, of course, he was spoilt rotten. They took him to a cafe for lunch, and he got some cake for dessert. I asked him later what sort it was, and he reckoned it was Orange & Cashew. Now that could be very good, or very bad. Either way, I'm willing to try.

All kind of cakes are good. And pies. (Perhaps we should start bets on when and who will start the pie spin-off thread).

But back to to cakes.
I think my favourite would be a nice moist banana cake with chocolate icing. That said, I also have a strong weakness for coffee cake and carrot cake.

why spin it off, lets incorporate!
mmm, pies. I love pies.
Trisha's pies.
Mr Bun pies.
mince and cheese.
apricot chicken.
mmmmmmm, pies.

mmmmmmm, pies. Everybody LOVES pies.

Except people with eating disorders.

I bought a jimmys pie just so I could put the wrapper up on my wall. However the pie was expensive, dry and very shit so I burned the wrapper.

Even if you like Jimmy's pies, there are only so many you can eat in your life before your body strongly discourages you from ever eating them again. From 1992-1995 I ate alot of Jimmys. In my third year at varsity I could no longer stand the taste of the mince and converted to Marlowe.
Riding on a wave of nostalgia at New Year I purchased a Jimmy's Steak and Cheese: shithouse.

Is it just me but is the combination of Apricot and Chicken the worst thing to happen to food? Especially on pizza. I'm with Nick Harrison: don't eat fruity pizzas.

mince and cheese on pizza? no
apricot and chicken on pizza? no

// Everybody LOVES pies.

very few vegetarians do....

i don't know of any good steak and cheese pies anymore. or should i say blubber and cheese or grissle and chees or gravy fat and cheese.

go with the mince and cheese at least it's all grinded up into small pieces, so you don't really notice.

mmmm pie's are like instant kiwi's - 1 in 7 is a winner.

The mince in Jimmy's pies probably has more ground up grass from Jimmys back garden with the Holden ute rusting away in it than actual meat.

Jimmy's: The Vegetarian's Choice!

Sir Breadwyns on Lambton Quay have the best Steak and Cheese pies. Perfect.

jimi why the fuck are you buying jimmys pies? go to the archway shop by the library, or the one in commerce, and get a wagon wheels sausage roll for $1.20. they import them specially from wanaka. you will never want any other.

mmmmm...... pies after a BIG night out are great! Straight to the servo for a steak and cheese pie then home to bed! I had a Hot Apricot Pie addiction when i was at school - but i can't find any - must look harder - I also had a potato top pie almost every lunchtime - PIES ARE GREAT!

Carl as you know I am your Dunedin protege, yet my obstinate refusal to spend money comes between us.

I see the Archway shop. I see the paninis and kebabs that make me drool.
I turn.
I see the campus shop. I see a pie for 2 bucks - I calculate this is less than half the price of anything nutritious at the Archway.

Wallet wins.

//pie for 2 bucks

You have much to learn grasshopper. They discount just before they close. Let Carl be your guru.

// see a pie for 2 bucks

mmmmmmmmm wagon wheel chicken satay pie mmmmmmmmmmmmm

pity people are having bad experiences with Jimmy's Pies. shops do dry them out - the best Jimmy's is a fresh one. and the makers at Roxburgh have a billion other wonderful flavours and varieties.

Awright, this thread is starting to spiral outa control....I started this topic about Cake, not your macho bollocks pie discussion! I won't have you never-grew-up-monkey-wrench-wielding-stick-a-pie-in-ya-gizzard boys tainting our cake discussion of this nonsense about pies, now, you hear! Save it for the pub!

//tainting our cake discussion of this nonsense
that's "with this nonsense". Hate that. Great post spoiled by grammatical error.

cheese in pies is just wrong.

A Jimmie's pie contains approx 27g fat, which is about the same size as a golfball.

sorry heather...
that you're a cake nazi!

// very few vegetarians do....

Aw come on! Veggie pies are the BEST pies.

Pies can be good, but it's hard to find ones of decent quality that aren't too old. Also, many are ruined by having peas or carrot or corn in them.

//sorry heather...that you're a cake nazi!

I'm not really a cake nazi. It's just that all this talk about pies reminds me of the bad old days - those cruel teachers who thought it was acceptable to hit us with a steak pie when we were late, the thrashings we got with a chicken tandoori pie for forgetting our PE gear, the hours in detention we spent scooping out the fillings from the hotpot pies and dividing the peas from the gravy...

//macho bollocks pie discussion

What Heather is saying is that cake is for girls and pie is for boys. This is because girls are subtle and sweet like a cinammon cake treat - and boys are thick and smelly like a steak n' cheese belly.

//Veggie pies are the BEST pies.

Possibly, but I think most of the vegos that I know are put off a) by the quantity of fat in pastry and b) the whole thought of bits of meat in pies generally

//i actually clicked on that link.

it was a great link. i was impressed.

// it was a great link. i was impressed.

i especially like how that little cluster of letters comes spiraling down from the left side of the screen, gathers in the middle of the page, and then slowly spells out "YOU'RE A DUMBASS".

...

sorry jimi im blocking the d already. i meant the campus shop. there was a rumour archway had five dollar pies. one day i will buy one of them. campus shop has wagon wheels. the chicken satay is nice, the mince is cheap (used to be $1.50 though), but the sausage rolls are tops. and only $1.20. back in the day they were only one dollar.

the discount thing has kinda gone since they moved into the mall. i am told that commerce may still do deals late in the day, however i prefered to pay money and stay away from commerce. the deal is you turn up about half an hour before closing, and buy one thing, and they tell you to grab something else. so back in the day i would buy the sausage roll for $1.00 and then get a $2.50-$3.00 gourmet chicken pie for free. i miss my pies.

anyone who puts peas and little bits of carrot in pies should be fucking shot.

http://www.peasarewrong.com ]

woah that was a bit ott.

i really ment....... peas and carrots are yucky in pies.

they do that in chicken pies, even broccoli sometimes, now thats wrong!!

//Pies can be good, but it's hard to find ones of decent quality that aren't too old. Also, many are ruined by having peas or carrot or corn in them.

i have this mean bakery down the road from where i live that cooks fresh pies everyday they have the nicest chicken pies in this mint sauce with peas and carrots, i usually hate that shit but love these:S

so many to list.
I know what I haven't had in a while carrot and banana cake. damn they are nice though I am more partial to the icing than the cake itself.

This is spooky. I keep going to write something and people pre-empt me. My favourite cakes are:
hot self-saucing microwave chocolate cake
banana cake with chocolate icing
and carrot cake, but only because I like the icing.

I like carrot cake and those madeira cake things.

I whipped up a fine banana cake last week. I'd forgotten how easy cake-baking is (when I was a kid, I used to make a cake every Sunday afternoon, for the family to tuck into after dinner).

Carrot cake's next on the hit-list then.

i made a cake once. it sunk.

That's what you get for trying to cook it in the bath.

// That's what you get for trying to cook it in the bath

ba dum dum tsh. You all know what that means.

Carrot cakes ARE yummy -
//...but only because I like the icing - yes that is the best part mmmmmm....i wanna make one now - i used to make good cakes but a while ago i made my boyfriend a choccie cake for his b'day and it looked more like a chocolate pancake! It's gonna take a while before i venture back to the cake baking thing...

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cake.

i love cake.

i like the apple cake my mum makes, and i like chocolate cake and chocolate.. .mmmmmmm..... i also like pies.

I have a friend who just cannot cope unless his weekend contains at least one piece of chocolate cake. Wise man, I say.

is his name koe?

Nope, Matt.

Just call me Notorious C.A.K.E

i love hash cake you get a sugar and thc kick all in one

And then 4 hours on the couch looking into space.
