WHERE IN AUCKLAND?!

Just come over from the UK for a few months and I need to know where to go out in auckland. Where are the best places for alt/rock/hip hop nights?
cheers

Forums: NZ Music,

Well, infradead, I'm glad you asked.

My faves are: King's Arms and Dog's Bollix. These pubs showcase a lot of lesser-known kiwi acts.
hip-hop / jazz / soul - Khuja Lounge
dance / drumnbass - Fu Bar.

There are plenty of bars in Ponsonby if you want an all-purpose night on the town, and I imagine the bars at the Viaduct Basin *cough* are still there, even though the America's Cup isn't. But don't go there.

If you go into any cafe worth its salt, you can get a copy of the Fix, probably the most comprehensive list of all the week's gigs. Also, bfm (campus radio) have a website with a good entertainment guide - www.95bfm.com

If you're interested, a few of us will be at the King's Arms on Wednesday next week for Mother Guru and 1QA. To be honest, I don't know what to expect...

oops, left out this link...

Apparently they've changed the stage at the KA over this week. My source tells me it's now really high - about eye level!

Jesus, Mary and Joseph that's awful for the bands but good for the punters. I'll check it out this weekend.

eh? Not quite sure how that would work...level with whose eyes??

My source's. Let's just say that it's a lot higher than the old stage. I haven't seen it with my own eyes.

Is your source a midget? I still can't see how it'd work. The ceiling's too low.

// The ceiling's too low.

That's what I was thinking. And how big is this new stage? Sounds like just the sort of thing that at least a couple of the local ska bands are unlikely to squeeze onto. Imagine being one of the poor band members who's relegated to the floor when they run out of space.

And DiSoRdeRly, should my petition to convince them to do a NZ tour ever come to light, will never fit up there.

Apparently they've raised the ceiling. All this within the last few days!

I'd better go check it out this weekend to see whether "my source" has got the facts right.

//And DiSoRdeRly, should my petition to convince them to do a NZ tour ever come to light, will never fit up there.

It's not them you'd have to convince - it's their mummies and daddies. "We'll take good care of them..No, I promise they'll be in bed by 11....No, we won't let them drink any al-co-hol...yes, I'll make them take their makeup off before they go to bed..."

yup, just went to KA to check it out.

the stage is about 4-5 foot (maybe more) high now and the usable area on it is better too, cos theres no holes at the back, it may even come further out into the audience bit (but im not sure... and the ceiling is about twice as hig as it was before.

//Sounds like just the sort of thing that at least a couple of the local ska bands are unlikely to squeeze onto
no way man, playing there now is gonna kick ass. heaps more room

i'm still getting over how heather recokens ponsonby is good for an "all purpose" night..

Oh no! Another fake! First some idiot in a band I used to like pretends to be a vicious old black woman, and now someone out there is pretending to be me! When will it ever end??

//and I imagine the bars at the Viaduct Basin *cough* are still there, even though the America's Cup isn't. But don't go there.

heh - as we like to call it - the Vile-duct

good calls on places to go Heather - surprised we havent bumped into eachother...

Ha! "All-purpose"="My-muso-mates-go-to-Ponsonby-after-practices-to-get-wasted."

I saw Rawer, The Shrugs and Xanadu play on the new stage at the King's Arse last night. It looks like things might not quite be finished, because there were two speakers on either side of the stage resting on bar tables. Well, I hope that's not a permanent part of the set-up. The new height is really good because is means that the audience doesn't block the band. The KA is turning into a pretty good live music venue.

i like the new stage too. its alot easier to see the band now from anywhere in the venue. don't think they're quite done fixing things up yet (in agreement with robyn).... the ceiling definately does not look finished.

// no way man, playing there now is gonna kick ass. heaps more room

ah. good. I'm pleased -- nothing worse than a disgruntled horn section.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha.

That's a good one, noizyboy!

// it may even come further out into the audience bit

thats cool seeing that area is seldom used ;)

//nothing worse than a disgruntled horn section.
hahahaha! hahaha! I don't even know why that's funny, but it is...

hahahaha! aaahahahaha!

//the stage is about 4-5 foot (maybe more) high now
I guess that means no more DIY mid-act sound checks.

OMG, does that mean that the next time the WBC play at the King's Arse, Chops won't be stuck playing in the little corner at the back of the stage and might actually get to pull off his rock star guitar moves in front of the adoring teenage girl fans?

Heather - I saw a someone with a bag like that on Friday at Hopetoun Alpha, as I was leaving...but she didn't look like you, and she didn't say anything when she looked at me, so I assume - it wasn't you.

//good calls on places to go Heather - surprised we havent bumped into eachother...

It's not really that surprising, since I don't know you from soap. My Emily the Strange bag is a near-permanent fixture. Keep an eye out. Come say hi.

Why don't they put the stage down the other end,

andy why does your email addy not work heather?

I can't access the site either. Try my hotmail address (same name at hotmail etc).

are there any dedicated rock nights in clubs with DJs playing just rock music?
Im 20 by the way...

There is one on Tuesday nights at Indigo in Wellington.

Check out my city... it is far better.

If you go to Papa Jacks you can hear "DJ Bomber playing the anthems". I couldn't tell you what it's like, however, as I've avoided it like the plague. Or perhaps even more than the plague.

// I couldn't tell you what it's like

For infradead Bomber is also a radio host in auckland

Here's a quick rundown of "DJ Bomber playing the anthems".

Bomber plays the same music as he plays on the radio, except at volumes past the point of pleasure, so you have crap music at painfull levels and arn't able tto talk to people, it smells, it's full of the 'cool' people, and you're paying bar prices for drinks.

woo.

papa jacks is a dive. don't go there.

I wish I had summed it up like that

yeh, stay home and masteurbate like these fat fucks

Perhaps I should have used those sarcasm indicators that someone proposed a while ago.

ok, strange that, there seems to be more rock orientated people here than in the UK and we have a few dedicated rock clubs in Liverpool.

I think most of us here are into the live acts. I suspect there are plenty of bars in town and Ponsonby that have the rock DJs with all the anthems, but we'd all rather sit around at the KA, comment on how quickly they managed to raise the roof, get drunk and wait for the bloody act to just bloody hurry up and bloody start already...

I went to a rock club in ch ch, and it was the most cheesy thing i have ever experienced. Bring on the bands maaan!

it certainly is a gap in the market that needs to be filled

//wait for the bloody act to just bloody hurry up and bloody start already...

Yeah, like bloody Paselode last bloody Friday. Sort it out you bloody monkeys.

all i can say is, go to the Promise of Bloodshed release show when they have it (sometime soon hopefully).

It's gonna be mad, hopefully at Kings Arms soon, so they don't do id checks. man i hate being 17.

release for their 2 cd :) (not including the love recording at bfm)

dude, if you show up at the KA and you're not of age you deserve to get your head kicked in. if you get snapped there, your actions could result in the KA getting closed down. and then where would all these bands play?

and you advertising your actions over the net certainly doesn't help the situation

well maybe then they'll do more id checks wont they, maybe that'll help

or maybe you just shouldn't be where you're not meant to be

i'm a teenager, it's my job to break the rules

I'd say definately check out that gig at Kings Arms with Mother Guru and 1QA, two of the best live NZ acts i've seen. And Heather seen as you're going could you give Daz (the guitarist) a big hug and kiss and say it was from me (Whitepony) Cheers if you do!! Don't be shy, he'll love you for it

Delivered as per instructions. And he was really stoked!
It was my pleasure tho - what a cutie!

//It's not really that surprising, since I don't know you from soap. My Emily the Strange bag is a near-permanent fixture. Keep an eye out. Come say hi.

I didnt notice anyone with the Emily bag @ Mother Guru on Wednesday... but I wasnt exactly checking every bag in the place.. *grins*

Well, I was there by myself; I sat in one of the (only two) chairs between the bar and the doors to the garden for most of the night. Blue jeans, red cardigan, voltron t-shirt. Hard to miss. Where were you?

voltron!?!
car or lion?
(please say lion, please say lion. if you say car my respect for you goes into overdraft)
