Suggested by Scott... maybe there should be a way to ignore all posts by an individual user that you decree you do not want to pay any attention to.
It will force people to be at least a little polite and to keep the board respectful. These kinds of communities could feasibly be ripped apart by someone who wanted to... people won't keep chatting if the feeling is a negative one.
I for one would like to be able to use an ignore function...

i'm not sure if i would like an ignore function.
alot of people start off on the wrong foot and then come around. we'd never be aware of that if we had them on ignore. also i quite like the satisfaction of being able to read what they write and then choosing to just ignore them anyway.
I agree. Everyone has a right to have ...
I agree. Everyone has a right to have a say and I guess If we all don't agree with it or don't like it we should all just do it the old fashion way and not take any notice of them until they get their act together.
An 'ignore' function could get a bit ...
An 'ignore' function could get a bit unwieldy; same reservations as Prozaco on this count.
The really bad stuff is deleted, isn't it? I think there were a couple of (very long, pointless, rude) posts in the last week that possibly could have been deleted, but all in all I think the current system works. If someone's really out of line, they'll work out pretty quickly that they can't really get away with it for too long.
I wouldn't like an ignore function ...
I wouldn't like an ignore function either. Like Heather and Prozaco said, some posters develop and start writing some really interesting stuff.
I am of the opinion that if someone ...
I am of the opinion that if someone comes in here and acts like a dickhead, they most likely are a dickhead, and don't deserve my attention.
Why give people a chance to develop? Most people come in here and be polite. The ones that don't can fuck off.
// they most likely are a dickhead, and ...
// they most likely are a dickhead, and don't deserve my attention.
exactly.
i think the problem only really begins when you start trying to reason with these idiots. just leave them alone. they will eventually stop flaming everyone when they realize that at this forum we don't respond to that kind of crap.

//Why give people a chance to develop?
Because most of them actually do grow up, eventually.
Besides, I think having a post deleted sends a far better message than just allowing users to ignore posts. I'm also happy to leave any censorship to the discretion of Teina and Dust.

eh? What I meant was that I don't think letting users push a button to hide stuff that they may or may not want to read is really necessary. That's all. If there's anything really nasty put on, then I trust it'll be taken off. What's wrong with that?

bugger, just hand me a ladder, I have dug myself a wee hole....... the cop out was not directed at you heather it was just a comment about relying on others to clean up messes when we go overboard in a post..........

Oh, I get it... Nah, sweet, I meant the opposite really - I just wouldn't want to see any kind of crazed over-censorship (which I myself would probably fall into, in my mood-swingy haste, had I a button that said 'Ignore').

How about we just stick to just letting the Moderators delelting posts that are highly non-sensical or offensive like Aka said pretty much.

I also don't like the idea, we just need to use our on board ignore button.
And if I may for goodness sake stop giving the trolls stuff to feed off, the best way to show total disapproval is to not reply.
I'm sorry if i upset anyone but really last week was a bloody shocker not because of one "old" Rasta man but because so many people took the bait and replied to the posts that they made........
I can't remember who posted this on nzm 1st but it does need reposting....
Fighting on the interweb is like the Special Olympics, no one wins and you at still all idiots at the end of it
Aka carefully climbs back down from the high horse and walks away to enjoy a good read on the forums.

I think a few of us have learned quite a bit from last week's debacle. Naive though it may sound, it didn't even occur to me that a person would post just to provoke a reaction. I kind of assumed that everyone who posts actually means what they say. I've never had to deal with trolls before.
Smack me over the head with a trout, and I'll be right as rain.
What would help is a set of rules we ...
What would help is a set of rules we can live by. If you would like to contribute some NZM Forum Guidelines then moderating would be easier for moderators.
At present moderation is limited - favouring uncensored posts where possible. A couple of posts get removed where prudent. Personal attacks aren't tolerated, no matter what provacation. We also strongly believe that attacks on admin, staff and NZM volunteers is not healthy and these tend to be removed (although its very rare this happens).
We are looking a filters and other systems in future, but realistically it's a lower priority at present, due to the amount of time involved in taking that next step.
Rules that are defined in part by the community would go a long way...
P.S. Its good to hear the feedback on the general experience of the NZM forum 'society' from a non technical POV.. always welcome.
Dust, un truths and deliberate ...
Dust, un truths and deliberate missinformation needs to be removed.... remember funkybitch?
and i was thinking that if a topic spins off into a flame war instead of deleting posts just close the topic, what could be a more effective STFU?.... but don't let anyone else sneek on and post after it has been closed ;P

//just close the topic
yeah, I thought something similar - you wouldn't necessarily even need to remove the topic - just don't allow people to post comments on it.
I too think ignore function wouldn't ...
I too think ignore function wouldn't be very good. If someone quoted or replied to someone on another's ignored list they wouldn't know what was going on. & some people here have the occasional decent post amongst lots of crap too.
//I think a few of us have learned quite a bit from last week's debacle
I didn't even bother reading it. It turned the forums into such a boring week, seeping into a lot of the other threads.
//for goodness sake stop giving the trolls stuff to feed off
Most people aren't good at controlling themselves.
i would like to be able to ignore ...
i would like to be able to ignore people from the forums and bar pages in the recent posts list. or maybe ignore topics. those really big popular ones, especially if i actually care about them, i read them in their own forum so i can understand the replies. and they take up so much room in the most recent posts. it would probably be really confusing to set up though. but that is not my problem. DO IT NOW. it would probably take me more time to figure out how to use it than i would save. DONT DO IT. im gonna stop making sense.

Seeing as restraint is hard for some people (including myself) when it comes to trolls. One possible solution would be to let the people decided what stays and goes. Say a certain number of people were to post something like.... 'delete this' under a really shitty post. It could then be deleted by admin, because thats what the people have asked for.

Hey... that'd be kinda fun. A mandate from the masses... maybe a few people could be given veto rights, based on their clout in the community.

That's JUST what I was thinking of. Maybe an option of "admin attn" alongside the "add comment" button, which we can use to message the Mighty Ones. If a set number of people complain about a particular post or topic, it can be deleted or closed.

one persons opinion is just an opinion - why should it be deleted just because a mass majority decree it should be?
if one were to reduce that line of argument to an absurd level, then a lot of really good music would be 'deleted' because teh mass majority said it should be... which would be a bad thing...
i say .. let all posts remain - down with censorship
I have a really cool in-built ignore function - i just MANUALLY ignore some people... heheh

Whoa... hadn't noticed this thread previously... heh - sorry if I had I would have pipped up earlier...
The reason I suggested an 'ignore' function is that on one of the other boards (yes this is my auxiliary board) I frequent there are instances where user have been less than polite (makes the recent debacle mentioned look like a nice picnic in the park) and huge flame wars have the habbit of developing.
The ignore function I refered to is a feature which is avao;able on the site, which allows you (as it is customed to each user) to add people to your 'ignore list' - once on it you will not actually see their post, only the fact that they posted - if you wish to actually read the post you can click on it and bring it up.
The reason I brought it up is that it seemed like an easy way for inidividuals to avoid being frustrated by those people who deliberatley troll or flamebait. Personally I only have 3 people on my 'ignore list' out of 3,836 users on that site.
I highly reccomend it as a good way of dealing with lammers who just want to stir shit and waste time, without having to get admins involved all the time...
Just my 2c though...

ignoring certain others because their veiws and opinions do not align with ones own implies ignor-ance. is this an open forum or is it the board of nz on air. come on guys, let the spazoids be heard. they add the colour and shades to an otherwise bland and odourless music industry. new zealand is the mashed potatoes of the worlds banquet of music, let us not try and pour tomato sauce on top to try and hide our blemishes and therefore making it more disgusting...

it's a pretty sad state of affairs when you can seriously be upset by what some stranger says to you on a web forum.. i mean.. c'mon people... grow up a little bit...

I think this whole ignoring thing is ...
I think this whole ignoring thing is quite silly...I mean, you go to a message board to hear what someone's got to say dont you? Even if they are a complete and utter twat. Infact, I have a good laugh at what some people say! And not only that, message boards work on threads as we all know. If you've got a thread, and someone says something in it who you've put on ignore, you'd just be completely lost. No one would know what anyone else is saying....it'd be mayhem!
And compared to most forums NZM is very friendly....who here needs to be ignored? I haven't had trouble with anyone yet.
If you choose to ignore someone who disagrees with you, well, that's all a bit weak. Why on earth would you visit a messageboard if you don't want to hear what people want to say?
I think what NZM really needs is one of those spell checking functions....believe me, it would save me a hell of a lot of time. After all, we all know that there is truely nothing more offensive than poor spelling ;-)
