none of those are 'best of' albums

yes.it looks like prisonsex has been knocked out in the first round..........i guess the nirvana one is almost a best of....................

~Flock The MuttonBirds.... good opener solid for whole innings
~Heavenly Pop Hit the Chills...... good middle order, is forgiven for some bad plays but I love my leather jacket and HPH are sure fire 6's to bring up the run rate
~Rust in my Car by Citizen Band......... made a bit weak by the inclusion of the Peter Urich tracks but still a good all rounder
~Anthology by the clean
~Compilation by the clean inclusion of both, because nz has always played better when brothers have been included in the line up and Hamish and David easily match the crowes and the hadlees
~Mi Sex '79-'85 .........non stop sex the last track puts a good wag in the tail
~History Never Repeats: The Best of Split Enz
~The very best of Herbs who said Maoris can't play?
~Jesus I Was Evil - Anthology.......... best of by default
**Natural Compression by Weta
**Compiletely Bats by the Bats

** Although i have not heard these albums I would include them for the simple fact the players have showed well in the past and it follows like any selector that I can include players from impressions gained at other viewings

I thought SoundGarden - A Sides was quite good

i think soundgarden are the only band i know who released the right single every time. a-sides is my idea of a perfect best-of.

a /sides was fucking appalling. you cant call a best of asides when it has a bside on it. i refuse to ever buy this album. pure asides would be a perfect way of determining what should be on the best of. a bsides album would be worth a lot of dollars from my wallet.
soundgarden did do well releasing ty cobb.

Pixies B-Side album.
Suede's double B-Side album.
Muse's B-side album.
The Cure - Standing On A Beach.
Grandaddy - The Broken Down Comforter Collection.
Pantera - Official Live; 101 Proof (Sure it is live, but it is an appropriate best of - does far better than any studio recordings.
Shihad - B-side album.
Soundgarden - A-Sides
Faith No More - Who Cares A Lot? (Doesn't have the best... in fact, it has some of the worst... but I'm running low on best ofs that I know)

Alright I'm stopping there. Best ofs are soulless things... don't like em very much. Definately aren't gonna say the Nirvana one... because it just doesn't include the best of Nirvana.

Oh, and Split Enz - History Never Repeats...

I need to borrow you Muse B sides album man :-)

I'd say Death to Pixies (Best of A-Side album) would have to be in (if not 1st) my top 10...

// I'd say Death to Pixies (Best of A-Side album) would have to be in (if not 1st) my top 10...

Of course!!!

And it is my flatmates Muse CD... :(

Here are 11 "best of" CDs that do it for me:

Beastie Boys - The Sounds Of Science
Blur - The Best Of
The Cure - Standing On A Beach (and) Galore
Faith No More - Who Cares A Lot
The Go-Go's - Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's
Joy Division - Substance
NWA - Greatest Hits
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs
Straitjacket Fits - (Untitled Best Of)
Matthew Sweet - Time Capsule
Violent Femmes - Add It Up

I like compilations that aren't just a collection of greatest hits, but that add something new. Alternate versions, live tracks, demos, unreleased things all add to the bands history. "Best of" compilations that work the best seem to be the ones that the band has some say in compiling. CD booklets with stories behind the songs are always appreciated. A lot of the "best of" CDs I have are for bands I don't like enough to buy their individual CDs. A good compilation doesn't treat the CD as merely a "best of" but as a work of art of its own.
