Do we give our up 'n' coming bands the publicity..

they need to succeed? I mean I've been listening to a lot of my local groups lately and there's some really good talent amongst them yet they never get the publicity they need to get anywhere. I no the funding for New Zealand bands is limited which doesn't give us a lot to work with but do you think we're loosing prime talent because of this? The Smoke free Rock Quest is a great thing because it gets the teenage groups out there but apart from that what do we really have to give our up and coming groups the break they need?

Forums: NZ Music,

I've always thought that you had to do it yourself anyway. BUT I see your point, it's hard to get your name about the place and get bums on seats at shows when you can't get media coverage because of no funds or the lack of a good publicist. There are, however, avenues for consideration and the old "do it yourself" thing too. I dunno, as a person I'm inclined to hope that people are open and receptive to helping out unknown acts merely out of a spirit of co-operation, but as an artist I know that its just not the case. I say break laws, I say hijack radio frequencies and play your songs untill you get busted, I say spraypaint your website on the sky tower, I say call channel z fifty seven million times a day asking them to play your song untill they A) have you arrested for misuse of a telephone or B) play the fucker so you will leave them alone. Anyone else? Perhaps we should build a database of dumbarse stunts that unknown bands can pull to get attention.... A band in Hamilton called Nervous Wreck kidnapped a staff member of a radio station and refused to return them untill the station played their song, a bit extreme, and they WERE pretty crappy, but you see the point....

It is really hard for a "new" band to build a following ... find places to play and attract new punters.

There is no quick fix ... but one of the best forms of publicity in the early stages of a band's development is word of mouth. If you see a band and like what you see and hear, tell 5 people about it and so on. Once a band can attract a decent crowd to a good venue then they need to be letting the "press" know about their performances ... invite whoever does the reviews in the local rag, or the trades etc, pester them to come to your show ... always helps if you can hook up with an established act too. And then build on good publicity ....

Yeh, OR write your bands name in petrol on victoria park and light that baby up!!!!!

As St. Lucy just stated, bands r finding more and more "creative" ways of getting their music around.oh and i have to say that atleast it has majorly improved from the past, and that as the years go on it'll keep on improving.

Go To Antiwar Protests and have your website on the back of a banner that says "AmERica IS StInK OW!" and when the film crews are facing in your direction, spin the placard around and give a big smile whilst throwing up your goats and poking your tongue out...
