a reply about m2!

i'm sure everyone got the same email:

Thank you for your email. The decision to remove m2 was principally a financial one. With a finite amount of money to spend on programming, we are always assessing our programming mix to ensure it caters to the diverse needs of our audience.

With a significant commitment to New Zealand music already in place through Space, Squeeze, MaiTime, Smokefree Rockquest, plus the chart shows which regularly feature local content, we have made the decision to invest the significant budget required to continue m2 into other areas of programming.

We are currently in discussions with the producers of m2 to see if there may be an alternative option for continuing m2 in an abbreviated form.

Please be assured that TVNZ remains committed to supporting New Zealand music, while also continuing to serve the interests of our wider audience.

John Daley

Forums: NZ Music,

They should just cann the Rockquest documentaries, there is enough info about the quest on the net. And plus its only on for 3-6 episodes, it's nothing but a liabitlity, or mayne not even that.

Yeah I got the same e-mail.

Hopefully something from this happens

Doubt it. Every good press release has some sort of hook designed to apease the audience that is recieving the press release...that sentance is their hook. Though I hope I'm wrong.
I'd love to see the press release they fired around internally within TVNZ.

yeah, it's PR crap.

I actually think they will. There's obviously been a bit of outcry over the loss of the m2 show, and the need for some sort of non-chart video featuring a good proportion of local content is pretty apparent.

The charter's in effect, and Satellite Media are hardly going to sit around and let the resources they built up for m2 go to waste.

If that means a weekly video show a al Radio With Pictures, than sweet, bring it on. I think I posted elsewhere what I would like to see: a one hour nz music video show every night (or even a 50/50 nz/intl split).

Everyone's *so* down on TVNZ at the moment for cancelling m2, and, admittedly, their track record with music video TV is shocking. But give 'em a chance. The charter has heralded the dawning of a new era! ahaha.

Seriously, give it a month or two, and a lower-budget replacement will be on the horizon.

typo: a la Radio With Pictures

I got the same email.
I kindly replied "So we'll be expecting some more crap reality TV"
Did you notice that it was the "Website Manager" who replied. some web nerd who got handed a press release and asked to regurgitate out to all of us. What a fucking cheek.
Financially means, not enough advertisers want to have their ads within M2, nothing to do with programming at all. It's all bullshit.

John Daley is no web nerd.

yeh, i replied along similar lines- of looking forward to more exciting episodes of "DIY Do Up Your Dream Home Arse" ...
pffft

Sounds like they're really only trying to calm people down into hoping they will actually do this.

well i sent 2 emails and got no reply!

well i think this is all utter Bullshit! they wont do this its just an lame excuse
but i do really hope and i will pray that m2 or an "abbreviated form" will happen
but for now i have nothing to say to tvnz about their choice to scrap m2
its just so unfair

goddam,. i hope they do... kinda sucks to be a kiwi music video maker right about now ...

i got the same one, but mine was addressed to me, Mr Poulton hmm, stupid mass mails, i wanna go down there to TVNZ and see them in person and then see if they give me the same bullshit answer

I got another e-mail, from "Diana Schnauer" , CC :

It was similar e-mail to the one above, but different wording

Dear Jamie

Thank you for your email addressed to the Minister of Broadcasting regarding the removal of m2 from TV2 that has been forwarded to the Chief Executive of TVNZ’s office for reply.

The decision to remove m2 was not made lightly. With a finite amount of money to spend on programming, we are always assessing our programming mix to ensure it caters to the diverse needs of our audience. We are grateful for the support many advertisers showed m2, however there simply wasn’t enough revenue generated from advertising to adequately fund the programme.

While the TVNZ Charter amongst other things, requires us to inform and entertain our audience, TVNZ, under its Act is also required to maintain its commercial performance.

TVNZ has a significant ongoing commitment to New Zealand music through Space, Squeeze, MaiTime, Smokefree Rockquest, plus the chart shows that regularly feature local content.

TVNZ’s support and promotion of the talents and creative resources of New Zealanders must extend across a vast range of local comedy, drama and other areas of the arts and culture. Minority audiences, young people and New Zealand music are very much a part of this brief and will continue to be catered to as we embrace our public broadcasting mandate.

The Charter requires TVNZ to try and strike a balance in its programming. While we understand that many of our viewers would like to see more New Zealand music screened on TV2, we must balance this against other demands on our schedule and resources from other genres of programming.

While we acknowledge that the removal of m2 from the schedule means there is a reduced outlet for less mainstream music video airplay, we are in dialogue with m2’s production company, Satellite Pictures, to investigate the feasibility of continuing m2 in an abbreviated form.

Please be assured that TVNZ remains committed to supporting New Zealand music, while also continuing to serve the many interests of our audience.

Yours sincerely
Glen Sowry
TVNZ Head of Public Affairs

Oh dear, what a load of shit.
WHAT other genres, cheap reality shit, american sitcoms, Marae - but only on a Sunday morning.
Jesus tv2 isn't satisfying the requirements of any genre.

Why did they ever start M2 if this is their attitude in the first place then and how much advertising revenue could they expect to get from 12 - 6?

tvnz is full of shit they just want the money for themselves
all this is an excuse! a lame one im not gonna stop sending emails!

"we are in dialogue with m2’s production company, Satellite Pictures, to investigate the feasibility of continuing m2 in an abbreviated form."

Shut the hell up TVNZ, we all know abbreviated form means, "watered down." M2 bloody had a great informative show and had more variety than a half hour of Coro ST does! If it's watered down, why put it to air at all??? Silly lil buggers. very bloody poor!

I'd say by "Abbreviated" they'd be having an hour of Mulch, Alt, Full Clip, Stylus and maybe just a less mainstream new release show each night hopefully but hey just an idea

meaning one of those shows each day mon-fri

yep i got the exact same email to, load of crap i thought!

does this mean we stop sending emails?
or because we got a reply, we now send twice as many..

What about demanding a personally written reply?

now that would be funny, think of all the emails sent in :D hah

Nah, don't stop sending emails. Send three times as many AND demand personal replies.

nah, keep on sending them. Just keep telling them wat u wanna see, like i told them to give this so called "alternative show" a better time slot. Hopefully they will finally get the picture.

Perhaps someone in the Auckland area should go and hold the head of TVNZ to ransom...the ransom payment being to put m2 back on air. In the mean time I have nothing new to listen to - m2 was my main source of new music material. Not crap they overplay on the radio.
