Another cheery topic...
I've been told, my tonsils will have to go...and so far I've heard only bad news. Blood, extreme pain, vomiting up black blood (sorry for that graphic description), and just hell for about 2 weeks.
Can anyone confirm or deny this if you've had yours out?

I talked funny before I had my tonsils out. My voice had this odd muffled sound to it. It was hoarse when I had them out, but began sounding better really soon.
Ice cream isn't so good. I had some when I was recovering (because that's what everyone said I should do) but I ended up spewing it up and vomiting with sore tonsils is pretty unpleasant. Warm bland food is best.

Yeah it kind of sucks but ahh well. The annoying thing is I'm just getting back into stuff again, and now I have to go through this and a septoplasty which is completely unrelated to my illness. Ahh well lots of time on NZM should make it all better.
//septoplasty Aaah. When I said I'd ...
//septoplasty
Aaah. When I said I'd had the interior of my nose renovated, that's what I meant (among other things). Are they doing them at the same time or different?
The worst thing about septoplasty is the sneeze paranoia. Afterwards your nose is pretty much full of blood, and you have a big cotton wad taped over the end to help it heal. Hence, sneezing would be very bad. But I never felt compelled to sneeze (well nothing was going to get up my nose to make me want to).
I was more or less back to relatively normal living within 48 hours (although one of my rocket scientist friends that weekend thought it would be really funny to throw a frisbee straight at my head, and then yell out my name so I'd notice just in time. It smacked me in the forehead...)
I'm not quite sure what the point of my rambling was, but the septoplasty etc. wasn't bad at all, and I'm quite a fraidy-kat.

Different times because otherwise i'll get blood leaking from my nose into the back of my throat which will cause an infection or something apparently.
I'm not too worried about that, i've been assured it won't change my nose shape and it won't piss blood so that's all good.

Yeah that makes sense. Although having to go through the whole op thing twice sucks. I feel for ya. Are they just doing a septoplasty, or are they doing other stuff up there while they areat it?

I had my tonsils out almost four years ...
I had my tonsils out almost four years ago. I wrote about it at the time (see link below), so that should give you an idea what the operation and recovery was like.
When I was in hospital all the nurses were used to little kids getting their tonsils out so they were being all bright and happy whereas I was 24 and being like "bring me the drugs". Apparently little kids recover really quickly, like the morning after they'll be bouncing on their beds, whereas older people need a couple of weeks to recover.
It wasn't all that painful, and I certainly wouldn't describe it was extreme pain. After the operation they gave me pethadine, which is a narcotic (yay!). I could still feel a kind of soreness in my throat, but it didn't hurt much. I also got some Panadol up my bum (!) which worked pretty well.
I only vomited blood once, but it was dark so I didn't see what colour it was. I think it's the sort of thing that only happens in the hours after the operation, so don't think you'll be puking up blood every day. There's a little bit of bleeding for the first few days, like you'll wake up and there'll be a bit of bloody dribble on your pillow, but nothing major.
The recovery took about 10 days for me. I had to take Panadeine several times a day and would wake up and have to force down some Panadeine to make my throat stop hurting. Eating is hard. Ice cream made my throat hurt really badly, I think it was more sensitive to cold. Mashed potato, however, was really good.
I spend most of the recovery time sitting on the couch watching TV. I could talk, but not a lot. (Enough to say "Mum, can you make me some mashed potato. Then after about 10 days my throat suddenly stopped hurting. I could eat more, I felt more energetic.
Anyway, its not as scary as it seems and if your tonsils were anything like mine, you'll feel so much better in the months after getting them out that any pain and discomfort will be worth it.

okay,
i had my tonsils out last year when i was 23. Sorry to say, it was the most painful experience of my life. i didnt eat for like 2 weeks, didnt smoke, just drunk water and had iceblocks. best thing i can reccomment is difflam throat spray. it numbs your throat and you dont have to swallow anything.
after the two weekes, you will be stoked that you had it done, i havent had a sore throat since. it hurts to talk after the operation, and you will be sick for the first few days, but after that it is just the pain. just being honest. so stick to the difflam, and voltaren pills.

All done.:D
I'm pretty exhausted but am keeping up with the painkillers so am not too sore. It wasn't as bad as I thought: Only thrown up once as yet and spat blood the day of the operation and that was it. No major complications-my heart had a bit of a pysco when they started to put me to sleep (173 beats!) but it's fine.
If anyone ever gets their tonsils out: Chew gum, it's great and clears the blood clots sitting in the back of your throat. Also ice-packs feel so good.
I was on the morphine list but didn't need it. I had the suppositories which actually worked really well, but now i'm on plain paracetamol and codeine.
Apparently the next couple of days are going to be the worst but hopefully all should be well.
