Fav Gigg of all time?

I personally thought the Foo fighters at the Big Day Out this year was by far the best! :D

if ur gonna just say the Big day out can u be more specific bout which band?

Forums: NZ Music,

I thought the gig at Galatos the night before was way better, that guy from Killing Joke was funny.
But Qotsa 2nd set at BDO was awesome

unfortunatly im not 18 :( so i couldnt go. But from all the reports and stuff it did sound a lil better :( dammit im jealous now :P

Portishead in 98.

best gig - Blur - north shore event centre 1997 (darcy clay support).
worst gig - oasis- queens wharf event centre 1998.

You got to see Darcy Clay.... I am so jealous.

//You got to see Darcy Clay.... I am so jealous.

well you can relive the moment, the cd of the concert is available its called "darcy clay - songs for beethoven"I think. You should still be able to bye it for about $15 if you don't have it already.

Yeah I got it, $6 from the warehouse. Scoooooooore!

//best gig - Blur - north shore event centre 1997 (darcy clay support).

that was a bloody good gig. me and ma mates drove from Dunedin to go to that gig ... and others things along the way ... lots of wonderful shred ... Dave the drummer had these incredibly massive monitors .. he must've been absolutely deaf ...

my favourite gig of all time would have to be the Clean at Arc end of last millenium (ears still ringing, feet still recovering) Bailterspace at the Union hall, Dunners ... closely followed by the Bats at Fuel when it was still Fuel ... closely followed by the last 3ds gig at the Muso's club, closely followed by Dimmer (with Chris Heazlewood and Robbie Yeats) at the Provincial ... and the Clean at the Dunedin Festival/Music/Sounds thing at Sammies was pretty bloody intense and well up there as well ... and then there's the HDU gig at Arc October 2001(there were two .. one was better than the other) was cataclysmically good ...

// I personally thought the Foo fighters at the Big Day Out this year was by far the best! :D

They were okay at the bdo... you will be very excited to see them in a tighter venue tho... Foos at welli townhall was amazing.

For me fav gig would have to be Gomez at the powerstation or HDU @ bodega last time....

foo fighters at the town hall welli was an awesome show! also at the big day out 2000.

That is a very hard call.

Tool at the Wellington Town Hall in `97 was cool...

// Foos at welli townhall was amazing. Gomez at the powerstation, HDU @ bodega last time....
Also all very good.

But what leaps to mind would be Sleater-Kinney at the Kings Arms. That blew me away. Yeah. That one'll work.

But hang on... was the Breeders at Indigo fucken kick arse. Came away with such a great feeling after that.

Although I was never an especially big fan, the gig that stands out is David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000. Pyramid Stage 9:00pm, it had been sunny all weekend (a rare thing for Glasters), a massive exuberant audience in a cow paddock, all the old hits, a few I hadn't heard, fantastic suit, lovely lovely guy, the sunset was so perfect it seemed like he'd engineered that as well. The following day's paper, alongside a photo of Bowie, reported "Could this be The Best Glastonbury Ever?" I suppose they say that every year, but I was at this one, so yes, it was.

I'm lost for words...............alright............. you saw david bowie at glastonbury 2000!, I can't compete with that. you win.

sincerely,

the riddler.

3Ds & Pavement @ Warners, chch, 1996
Wicked, two band at the top of their game going off to an adoring crowd. Warners, smelly fire hazard that it was was often a top spot for live music, and this night typified the type of gig you could get. Punters were greeted at the door by Pavement's slightly eccentric drummer (Gary? I think) giving out slices of apple. The 3Ds were loud and poppy and rockin' and as impressive as ever, and seeing Pavement (this was just after slanted and enchanted had come out) was surreal (a bit like when Radiohead played the same venue the next year, or when the White Stripes played at Bodega last year). Here were *superstars* playing at our little bar! Brilliant! The crowd was suitably hot and sweaty and packed into the mosh pit, and the most was one of the most enjoyable I've been in -- grinning faces, jumping around, no stupid stuff, all good. Topped the night off by breaking into Centennial Pool and diving off the 10m board. Ace.

ah, made the same mistake I did when I first posted that. It was more like 1993, I think. And the White Stripes reference should now read "year before last".

Can't remember the exact date but it was in the latter half od 2000. The Sunday after the Shihad concert at the Auckland Town Hall.

The Place: The Roadhouse Bar and Diner, Papakura
The Door: $20 a head
The Gig: The D4, Weta, Shihad and Jimmy Barnes for an encore

We heard that this gig was on and hummed and hahhed over wether to go or not. The boys had just seen Shihad the night before and were still buzzing. In the end we decided "Fuck it!!" and the four of us headed up there ... it is a couple of k's up the road from us.

So glad we went. The "stage" at the Roadie then was even smaller than it is now .... and the audience was so close to the stage.

The D4 had not quite hit their straps then but were still a real cool opening act. Then Weta ... why.oh, why did they quit. Quite an amazing set ... about 6 or 7 songs incl Snapshot, Calling On and Got the Ju. Number 2 son managed to purloin the set list of the monitor and it has pride of on his wall These guys just went off ... and then after a shortish break Shihad come on and the mayhem continued. The sheer power of the performance swept people up. And then Barnesy coming on right at the end for a one song encore wrapped the whole thing up very nicely.

For my boys it was a chance to really get close to two of their all time favourite bands (kiwi or otherwise). For me and the missus a chance to be young and stupid again just for a night.

And the next time I saw them again it was Pacifier, at the Roadhouse, Oct 31 2002 and my boys' band opened for them!!!!

//Weta ... why.oh, why did they quit.

Not my favourite gig of all time but close: Weta opening for the gurge at an all ages gig in ChCh in 2000. Previous to them going on stage I had felt like the oldest person there and quite uncomfortable. Then they came on and played the best rock I had heard in a long time and had the moves to match it. A fine fine band sorely missed.

And if you never got to see them live check out the live vid

Awwwwwwww yeah! I saw Regurgitator / Weta / Tadpole at Vic Union Hall - the night before I left Wellington for London. Damn, that was a gig...followed by a Chocolate Martini at Up. The perfect way to say goodbye to the city I loved.

I was at that gurge concert at the caledonian in chch as well. It was massive. And yes, it was very very very young.
In fact the crowd was so young, they weren't even trying for an encore. With old age comes less shame.... (we got the encore in the end).

um, and i think it was 99 ...

//um, and i think it was 99 ...

You're probably right - my memories of my time with the flatlanders are very hazy. Must be something in the air...

//something in the air

smog ....

yeah. i was only visiting flatland. I drove up from Dunnertron, and between the car, a significant other, and the flats i did pick-ups at, I'd pinpoint it as about October 99....

it was 99. i only went to see weta.

followed up by the second half of hlah at the dux. i was underage. but it was ok. they played better than the previous night in the d.

Forgot about HLAH. Not a bad night, although that room at the end of the dux is pretty "intimate"

//I'd pinpoint it as about October 99

how does saturday 2 october 1999 sound?

// I saw Regurgitator / Weta / Tadpole at Vic Union Hall

I was there too! Spent a little time at The Crypt in the graveyard that night, methinks.

shonen knife and the lemonheads at big day out 199something (7?8?). i bet bob mould at the kings arms in december would have been amazing, but i missed that one... anybody see it?

still can't get the hang of making my comments come up in the right place, they always attach to some random subject... durned newfangled interweb technology.

Shihad at The Mill in New Plymouth. The album Killjoy had just been released so it was about 1994 (?), and in my opinion Shihad were at their peak. It was a Tuesday night in winter with about 80 people at the gig. There was a really good vibe and it was one of the fatest, loudest gigs I've ever been to.

People think that Pacifier rock now.......well back in the day they completely tore an audience to pieces!

Fugazi at Vic Memorial Hall in 1997 - I learnt to be offensive in a mosh rather than just defensive, )although I was there illegally), Fur Patrol/Superette/3Ds ditto, Hole at the BDO 99, Smashing Pumpkins at the Queens Wharf Events Centre 96 (It wouldn't have mattered to me at the time if their actual sound etc was any good, because I just worshipped everything they did), Shihad at the Powerstation 99 (before I got too old and claustraphobic to enjoy moshing)

I don't think it's possible to top Tool the first time they played the North Shore Events Centre.

Probably Tool '01. silverchair '02.

Fridge and To Rococo Rot in London 99 was pretty mindblowing / eye opening. But Blackalicious in Melbourne last year probably takes it... and not quite so obscure either. Heh. Totally restored my faith in hip-hop as a live phenomenon.

Nup, none of those could compare to KISS live in Auckland & Sydney!! If the music wasn't enough, the show was SOOOOOOO awesome!!

TINA TURNER - LIVE IN AUCKLAND

u r kidding me, right??

yes, fav gig is last years Rotorua RockQuest :D

Tool (Toronto/02) was amazing but definitely upstaged by System of a Down Live in Toronto 02.

i hear systems guitarist is rather dissapointing live, lacking in energy etc etc, any of this true?

actually the guitarist has very high stage presence and endurance and jumps around so much and never misses a note.

I was going to post this just the other day on that other thread about the first gig people went too - but the impact of the first gig I went to was so huge, that it's probably at least one favourite. (Theres so many!)

Foo Fighters/ Sonic Youth - Wellington Town Hall 95 (I'm guessing). I'm 14 (I think). Foo Fighters are brand new - and I'm going along because I'm a little Nirvana geek (and also a fan of Sunny Day Real Estate - who the original Foo Fighters line-up had stolen the bassist and drummer from). They're good, and I'm stoked - but then Sonic Youth take the stage and blow my little mind. This was just after Washing Machine - so they play this killer version of Diamond Sea - and the power of live music at its best has still never been so obvious to me.

It's happened to me a couple of times after gigs since and its very cool - the next morning I had to literally RUN to the music store to buy Washing Machine.

I have a few different favourites, depending on how I define 'facourite'

Couple of standouts:

Mountain Rock 95(?) -- for a couple of days of rock and roll debauchery. Getting first injuries moshing to Head Like a Hole (and meeting Sam Hunt in the first aid tent) first up. And then a whole massive orgy of bands one after the other. And unlike the big day out only one stage, so you got to hear em all. So almost back-to-back hearing tim finn, dave dobbyn, supergroove, hello sailor, the mutton birds, the exponents, fagan (the mockers), shona laing, greg johnson to name but a few.

Fur patrol/Weta/Shihad 01 (?) -- three of my fav bands back to back. mmmmm.

and now for something a little random

The Scorpions with the Berlin Philharmonic (Hanover 2000) -- at bit of being there is everything. Pulling a naive "I'm from New Zealand" (flirt flirt) to get a free $150 ticket to get in; and then being in this amazing auditorium full of tens of thousands of germans on an emotional roller-coaster ride with songs like Winds of Change, and everybody crying and hugging and waving cigarette lighters. Then fireworks afterwards, and driving for 8 hours north into denmark on the longest day (so it didn't get dark, just eerie) at 180+km/h on the autobahn and getting lost in hamburg. An amazingly surreal gig.

Rammstein BDO '01.

nuff said really.

i have a few fave gigs of all time i just cant pick one!

Heh.... hard call this one...

Have to say my top 3 would be....

Sonic Youth @ The St James w/ Support from The Dead C (1995 I think)
JPS Experience (with themselves) @ The Sole Bar (1996 I think)
Dinosaur Jr @ Union Hall (Vic) w/ support from Short and The Bilge Festival

(Yes I'm an ageing bastard)

//JPS Experience

I wish I could have seen them. I went into a record store on Queet a couple of years ago (when I was young and naive - ha) and found a copy of an album of theirs', and asked the guys at the counter if there were any of their singles in the store. They looked at each other and laughed. And laughed. And then told me, in an infuriatingly patronising way, that "no, they stopped reasing singles a wee while ago."
Wanker music store people. All I wanted was a copy of Breathe.

Yeah I was bit of a fan boy at the time (oh my mispent youth) and followed them round the country on The Bleeding Star tour... interview them once and generally was an annoyance... Really loved them live though, nothing like their recordings (which are great)...

They were lush, wall of noise guitar music with slabs of melody and screaming gutars... All good...

The Breathe EP is probably their best release, includes 4 GREAT songs, including the magnificent Up In The Sky and Kickback... aslo an early version of Block with massive wall of noise guitars at the end...

There should be somewhere on-line where you can get a back copy of it, it's well worth while to spend a little extra to get this piece of kiwi music history!

Anyway, enough of my blather...

and lastly, BDO 2003 for Pj Harvey, the Foos and Shihad

Best gig for me I think was 3-D's, Superchunk and Buffalo Tom at Vic Uni sometime in the 90's. The worst band of the night were Buffalo Tom who were f'n incredible, Superchunk were a step above and 3-D's a step above again! Other excellent gigs at the same venue, Primus, Fugazi and Dinosaur jnr.

I have been to most of the BDO's in the last 10 yrs or so and found them to be good introductions to new bands but too distracting to really get into them. Best of the BDO's for me; Gerling, New Order & Audio Active from last year; Kraftwerk, Underworld & Rhombus from this year, Nick Cave & Tism from some other year?, Shihad/Pacifer from nearly every year... and I'm sure there are others that I've forgotten about, hmmm............

I was at the Bob Mould gig in December it was pretty f'n good! 3 of us went to the venue to try to get tickets cos it had been sold out for ages. Ended up getting our names on the door and BM was available to answer any questions and generally chat with anyone. An incredibly humble and all round nice dude as was his manager Kevin! He sells alot of his stuff online rather than through traditional means now, check the link.

I was at that gig too... brilliant... love Buffalo Tom, saw the 3d's HEAPS when they were still active and later grew to really enjoy SuperChunk... You're damn right - it was a very good night!
