There's a lot of variety in musicians' attitudes to what they do. I've met musicians who love making music, and want to communicate their love for music with other people; and I've met a few musicians who are working hard at it only because they want to be famous.
How much does a musician's attitude alter your opinion of their music? Would you support a band more, even if you didn't especially like their music, just because you thought they were doing it for noble reasons? Would you offer less support because a musician was arrogant?

I guess it does. Rubicon is extra lame 'cos Paul seems so arrogant. I am put off Godsmack 'cos Sully is so full of himself.
I was so excited about seeing TLBT even tho I only knew 4 of their songs, 'cos they have always seemed so nice in chat & on these forums. I am listening to electronic-y stuff (which I generally DO NOT like) for Disasteradio, I want to support him being a reallly nice guy.
Yes, my opinions on a band are affected by attitudes of the muso's offstage.

-i'm not sure if it was a famous person or a local musician or what that said it. But they claimed they would have never been able to perform live if they didn't go on stage telling them selves that they are better than all the other bands and all the people watching them... they would have just freaked out if they didn't...

I've met Paul.
He was pretty friendly, but it was fairly standard talk and involved me and my mate gritting our teeth while congratulating him on his show that we didn't see. Sad, I know.
But he did what I guess I would do in any sort of situation like that, if I was him (wow, overwritten sentence). Pleasantly chatted to us for a while, and then made his excuses, picked up a beer and a smoke, and stood at the back of the room nodding his head slightly to Kitsch. God Bless the musician.
However, a girl in my house has scored James Reid. According to her, he lives up to his reputation of being quite the wanker.........

He might seem arrogant, but he might actually be a friendly guy in person. I'm trying to ignore the media persona of people. Take Oasis for example. The british media hate them, and make them out to be arseholes. But they are excellent to their fans.

hey i was going to start a topic similar to this the other day - something about people supporting their friends bands and how much of that has to do with them liking the music etc.
but anyway, onto my answer: yes it matters to me what a bands attitude is like, especially towards their fans. i'd like to be able to say that its "all about the music" and not about personalities at all, but i would be lying.
if i liked a band and they were rude to me (this has happened to me a few times), i would still listen to their music but not go out of my way to support them. i might download their stuff instead of buying it (naughty!), things like that. but if a band i liked was nice to me, things would be totally different. i would go out of my way (sometimes waaaaay out of my way - like wellington) to support them.
it pays to be nice.

hmm... i guess it's also worth noting that no matter how nice a band is to me, i won't support them if i don't like them.
the other day someone said something to me about that i only support a certain band because they're my friends and that is absolutely not true. i also have friends in bands that i consider crap... you won't catch me shelling out any money to buy their cds or go to their gigs!

ah yes. that is also true for me. I was slightly misleading in my big post below when I said bands with people OR music I like -- that should really have read AND.
Must use my boolean terms correctly.

Nah, just I'd rather be affirmed by having a topic promoted to the New Zealand Music forum instead of thrown out into the bar. Imagine the humiliation!
//the other day someone said something to me about that i only support a certain band because they're my friends and that is absolutely not true.
Yeah, I'd like to think the same thing, but I do tend to go overboard raving about friends' bands. Even if the music isn't my thing, I think when I know them and their motives, and I can see first hand how much work they put into it, I really want to help them find an appreciative audience.
I'd definitely buy a friend's CD or go to a gig if I thought they were a in a good band and they were in it for the right reasons, even if the music didn't do that much for me. However, I do that anyway because I'd like to become a bit more knowledgeable about all the music available in NZ - not just bands that I like. I guess the difference is that I tend to proselytise a lot more about low-profile bands if I know one of the members.
That said, I most certainly wouldn't advertise a couple of musicians I've met. And yes, they play pop.

//the other day someone said something ...
//the other day someone said something to me about that i only support a certain band because they're my friends and that is absolutely not true.
Sometimes it is true though, some people are very bias towards their friends. I've got a few friends that are in bands and they are always like "Come to our gig on sunday" and stuff but sometimes i just never do. Mostly because i can't be stuffed since i don't go out much to gigs and all. I can't say i actually like most of my friends bands music either but i will support them to some extent by giving them a bit of encouragement if they deserve it. And then theres always the if you support my band i'll support yours"syndrome, but when it's one sided and you know they won't return the favor in supporting your own band that's where i'd feel discouraged to give them any sort of support. Now that is an attitude that matter's to me.
On the flipside you'd know if your friends were really your friends if they supported your band even if you made a million mistakes on stage and they still cheer you whole-heartedly even though you know your performance really sucked. I've felt first-hand this feeling and personally if anyone reached out like this to me I'd try my best to get behind them.

// Would you support a band more, even ...
// Would you support a band more, even if you didn't especially like their music...
Generally not. But, on the local front at least, I'm in a funny position (noizyland, radio active), in that I have to give a fair bit of support to bands that I often don't particularly like, just because that's the role I've set up for myself. The thing is, even if I don't like a band, it's usually pretty easy to see that a certain group of punters *will*, and that in itself warrants a bit of support: just trying to get the latter in front of the former. It's all good for the karma. If I can't see anyone at all enjoying a band's music, well, at that point I do try and fob them off.
Where I do like bands (whether it be because they're nice people, I like their music, or a combination of both, eg. the Brunettes, Range, Letterbox Lambs), I go all out (as much as I ever go all out) to help them out.
// Would you offer less support because a musician was arrogant?
Yes. Can't stand egomaniacs (who can?) Not that there's many in NZ, from my experience. Too small a place to be getting too big a head for yourself.
International bands are a slightly different kettle of fish...
// Take Oasis for example....they are excellent to their fans.
Ooo, I don't know about that. Their welly gig at Queens Wharf was virtually a by-the-book example of how to treat your fans badly. Well, Liam, at least. Turn up late, pissed out of your tree, perform abysmally, give up the ghost about half way through and ignore the crowd wholesale. Wanker. Maybe just an off night though. Haven't bought an album of theirs since though, and I was a mad Oasis fan a few years back.
On the flipside, I was a middling Pavement fan when they first turned up on these shores, and they totally converted me with their attitude. Not only did spend both the time before and after the gig hanging out in the bar chatting, they put on a great show, and gave out free apples at the door. Magic! Went on a CD buying binge after that, got all their records, and spread the word about how good they were.
// I don't have to actually interact with them to enjoy their music.
That's true, and, in cases where I haven't met the band, or seen them live, I tend to go solely on their music, rather than believing any media accounts of what they're like. As I think most people would agree, the media don't always tell it like it is, and the artists don't always portray themselves to be the people that they actually are. So, why base your attitude towards a band on a haze of half-truths?

hmmm...just thinking about bands that encourage a bad reputation because it makes them more popular. It's a fine line....Eminem's the perfect example - people like him *because* he's a wanker. That said, probably if he told some 12-year-old asking for his autograph to "piss off you snot-nosed little prick" then he'd lose himself a fan.

And maybe throw his girlfriend in a boot, and drive them both off a bridge? ;)
// the media don't always tell it like it is...

I think Eminem understands these points both more than many, and plays up to both. I think if you went and saw him live though, he'd be giving big ups to his audience all night long. 'Stan' was even a virtual apology to the fans he doesn't have time for, so he's obviously very aware of keeping his fanbase happy.

I kinda suspect Oasis had this sussed early on, but then the drink and drugs took their toll, and they stopped playing the arrogant wankers for the press, and actually became the characters they'd created...

Like Pantera, I saw a interview of them on Space, they were totally wankers, acting all tough & stuff.
Also Oasis, Liam & Noel are so cocky, they think they're the greatest band ever, it just makes my laugh that they take themselves so seriously

yeah i'm like that too Tama ... i get put off a band if they try to project the whole "we are th' shit!" thing, without irony ... that really gets ma goat ... but if they seem humble and do the shoegaze thing, that endears them to me and i'm prepared to like their music a bit more. which is totally hypocritical and doubla-standardy, but yeah, totally endearing to me ...
but if i don't like their music at all then nothing they do will change the way i feel ... instead i come back and check them out in a few months to see if i've changed/or they have changed.

Yeah, same - I quite liked Marilyn Manson's music when I first heard it, but then I saw this interview showing him as this arrogant preening git, so I didn't bother any more. One Columbine massacre and a few years later, and I've seen a couple of interviews that show he's become a lot more thoughtful. I'd definitely pay good money to see him perform again, partly because his shows are amazing, and partly because I think he's coming from the right angle now. He's still a melodramatic control-freak, but he's not pompous any more.
