in december 2001 i was chatting to the guys from stabbing westward about new zealand music. they seemed really impressed at what they had heard and were genuinely amazed to find out that most nz music doesn't get that far on the international stage. one of them mentioned that the same kind of thing happens in canada as well....
anyway, turns out they caught a pluto gig in chch and were blown away. being the nz music supporter that i am, i bought them the pluto album before they returned to america.
having caught them before, i wanted to see how their style had progressed. frankly, when i caught them last year at indigo, they were a little flat, but on sunday their live style was energetic and very interactive. their genuine enthusiasm was one of the reasons the audience warmed to them, and id almost say it would have been worth making more space for those who wanted to get down with their bad selves, even though the intended vibe was obviously a jazz cafe type thing. when tunes make you itch to move, chairs are an unwanted torment.

For example - being seated at Ani DiFranco and Bob Dylan... wanted to dance dance dance the night away.
Great review Stefan, one of you better ‘once upon a time’ gig assessments.
Pluto are a fantastic band, they make me think of the Beatles ‘white album’ when ever I hear them.
I love their new single…‘Perfectly Evil’......... its as dark as ‘Helter Skelter’
Yeah - Pluto are writing (and playing) some excellent tunes. Good to see in the current hype of 70's garage rock bands that a mellower pop band is still getting plenty of credit. Not that Im against garage rock - The Datsuns performance at the BDo was one of the best live performances from a band Ive ever seen.
Jaffa's got it right - Pluto are signed to Antenna and they did recieve $50k from NZ on Air, so they're not exactly suffering! We're are about to release an entirely self funded and 100% independant album that cost us personally about $18,000 (i still dont know the final cost cos the bills keep rolling in!).
actually plutos first album redlightsyndrome was 100% self funded at more than twice the cost of your most recent recording add to that over ten thousand dolars in legal fees to leave Antenna and the cost of self funding the near complete second album ( you are not elligable for that 50k until someone signs you )and you can see that pluto are running pretty far into the red to keep making the music they believe in . (excuse the pun )
