A gig poster section?

Hey

I don't know if you've had one before, or theres a reason why not, or even if this has been discussed before or whatever - but do you reckon there'd be enough room/interest for a gig posters section on the site?

I guess it'd be a bit of work, and I don't know how many other people there are out there that are that interested in stuff like that - but I think it'd be a great resource if you could get it going. I love gig posters as a medium - its such an overlooked component of the scene. I see a few things here and there, but it'd be great to regularly see people doing interesting posters outside of where I live (Wellington), for example...

I guess the downsides would be that it'd probably be hard to get people organised into sending in their posters - and I don't know whether it'd take up too much space or effort...

Anyway - just thought I'd mention it - I've got a couple of good posters I'd be happy to scan and digitally donate - and I've got the all ones I've done on file too if you ever want 'em.

Yeah, TJ Terror makes awesome posters. I think the Officer Pup launch is my fav, followed by the Die DJ Die II poster.

excellent idea XTOTL ... could perhaps be teamed up with an images section for Artists - for gig photos or somesuch ...

That's an awesome idea. I'd love to see this up on the site...I wouldn't mind contributing either.

The only tedious part about it would be scanning them all in, 1/2 at a time for A3 or even worse for bigass posters. Maybe photos with a digital camera would work better.

Yeah - that'd be true for scanning old posters J-Kip (for the record - I'm no huge collector - but my personal favourite is an old Toy Love tour poster by 70s NZ comic innovator Colin Wilson (who has since done stuff for 2000AD). Red, black and yellow - very 80s - with someone sticking a scapel in their ear, and, the best part - a woman having sex with a robot) - but for new stuff, people (at least if its the people who've made the posters) might likely have them on file anyway. Of all the posters I've done, even the most hand-done looking ones have been through a computer at some stage - so I've got them all in digital form.

Mel - that sounds fucking rad - thats exactly the kinda stuff I'd love to see. People like me could still oggle your collection without you having to put up with my smelly arse hanging around your room. Ah, the magic of internet...

Umm, and for the record, most of the credit for that second Die DJ Die poster should actually go to our man Dust - I just drew the picture. What do you think of this idea Dust?

hey guys,

funnily enough it's already in development as we speak - some really exciting features in this area.

perhaps we should get the posters sent in and digitised straight away so we can launch with a nice collection. I'll post an optimum size for images etc if people are keen to scan and send stuff in. A exact image size would be key for presenting these things properly..

p.s. you know that ddjd poster woulda sucked without the drawing!

Choice - thats wicked news.

Let me know the specs you're after, and I'd be happy to donate versions of the posters I've done...

I havae been collecting gig posters for the last 5 years or so i guess, I probably have over 1000 all up, most of them are Chch ones.
Its quite handy for when people come to visit, I don't need to make any conversation at all, I just let people stare at my walls for a few hours and they seem quite content.

I can share my collection if need be...........

I've kept every poster and flyer from every gig we've ever done ( well almost all, I think I run at about 85% ) I'd have well over a hundred different works. We have some of them running down the side of the 'previous shows' page of our website if anyone wants to have a look. We'll be adding them all when we overhaul our website in the coming weeks. Anyone got a contact for Batrider?

I've seen a gig poster section on a nz music site somewhere, just can't remember the url... this is a great idea though; just yesterday I was wondering what to do with some leftover posters... seems a shame to trash them. If anyone wants a poster from the Accelerants/Hot Swiss Mistress/Hawaiian Death Club gig, with the freaky devilboy image, hit me up cos I've got a few left.

this one?

not sure, but that's a good site! The one I'm vaguely remembering had a black interface... maybe this one just got updated, cos it definitely featured toby morris ... although, what good poster archive wouldn't?!

the big city (once was fraew.orcon.net) did used to have a black interface...

Hmm... don't know who runs that site, but I noticed theres a few on there that are credited to me but I didn't actually do -

The School of Meat etc @ Thistle Hall, So to Speak etc @ Cafe 223, Up the Punks and the Barzell etc @ Thistle Hall are all by Kerry Ann Lee - I really wish I could say I did those because they are stunners - some of my all time favourites actually. Die DJ Die is my illustration, but is actually designed by nzm's own Dust, and the 'You're Gonna Die Tonight' one I think is by Nate (?) from School of Meat. I also did do the Rainy Days one with the guy in the boat. You can usually tell which one's I've done because they have 'xtotl' on them somewhere, unless I forget which I have done a couple of times.

Otherwise thats a cool idea for a site - I wish there was a really comprehensive collection of New Zealand stuff somewhere - gigposters.com has a bit of NZ stuff, but there are about 8 thousand posters on there so there is a fair bit of shit to sift through.

mystery solved!

thats my site - i've got a few from toby morris there.. i've been speaking with nick white who has a bunch of (mostly chch) posters dating back the last 20 years - he's a designer himself and has a pretty aesthetically awesome collection. nick and mel both had a bunch of posters in the 'its a stick up!' poster art exhibition here in christchurch last year.. i think nick was planning a (bigger) sequel. If you guys want to get together and form a shared archive - that'd be wicked, and i'd be really happy to host. i've got a lot more space available now..
