HEALTHY TO ADMIT- MOST NZ MUSIC SUCKS

everyone stands around and cheers while some of the most appalling musical travesties are commited in this country- subsequently ¿the 'artists' believe the falsehood?- and they don't develop to their full potential- lets cut the crap & critique where criticism is due- take hdu as an eg- what utter shite

Forums: NZ Music,

There is crap out there. There is crap that has fans, that gets NZ On Air fundings, that releases CDs, that makes videos, that tours the country.

It seems that most crap bands run out of ideas after one album and make an empty follow-up, or start taking themselves way too seriously and make a really boring follow-up album.

But there's this kind of invisible pressure to support and love all New Zealand music. I've watched M2 and heard presenters promise really great videos from really great NZ bands and seen mediocre crap be played instead.

Being the bad cop is really hard. Telling a band they suck, sucks - especially if the band are really cool people. I hate negatively criticising a band. I think about things in the larger picture too, that if one band gets a bad review, then the whole scene gets a little bit of a dis.

But I've come to realise that really honest truth criticsm doesn't hurt because it is true. If a band really sucks, and you know this right from the bottom of your very soul (y'know), then you're doing a good thing by saying so. If I was in a band and, say, I was writing really horrible lyrics, but I didn't realise it, I'd want to know.

So really, are we being too kind to bands that aren't all that great?

I agree.

I fully agree with robyn.

There is an invisible pressure to support all New Zealand music saying its really good when maybe we are blinded by our own 'Made in NZ' stance. We are being too kinds to bands that aren't great, maybe mediocre as best but I guess you have to. Deep down you want any NZ band to do well, and take the world by storm so therefore praising stuff that normally you wouldn't buy. You can't find music like this anywhere else in the world, and maybe its that same reason why the rest of the world doesn't like it. When was the last time you brought an indian album?

I heard some NZ stuff that I would say in my opinion is crap, but I wouldn't go on and tell the whole world about it. Its cool that the NZ music got through to my ears in the first place.

//I was writing really horrible lyrics, but I didn't realise it, I'd want to know.

eg
Come inside take off your coat, I make you feel home
Now lets pour glass of wine cause now we're all alone...

*Someone sing the rest of this song please*

Shit bro, Tristan from HDU has more talent in his little finger than you have in your entire body. I am all for constructive critisism and calling a spade a spade when something is truly awful ie: Rubicon or Elemeno P, but your simply showing your ignorance when you say HDU have no talent.
Alright what sort of bands do you like? Lets see how impeccable your music tastes are.

hdu - a bad band?
wtf
if hdu are crap then how would you describe The Have, Rubicon, Betchapuda, or even the D4

Yee gads who knows what this guy considers good

//Yee gads who knows what this guy considers good

Hey wow, lookee what I found...

http://www.nzmusic.com/topic.cfm?i=2142 ]

Oooohhh - burn rdor

:)

Oi, Why do you like elemeno p and rubicon are awful? your just as bad as the first guy who said that HDU were crap, you do not need to mention these bands, they obviously have talent if so many people have there cd's and fast times in tahoe was such a massive song, plsu they are on the universal Label, and rubicon are on wildside. also, NZ are massive aorund the world right now....

//Yee gads who knows what this guy considers good

He said he liked his music "hard" like death metal.

lets play 'count the spelling mistakes' in elemenop's post

// they obviously have talent if so many people have there cd's and fast times in tahoe was such a massive song, plsu they are on the universal Label
They can play instruments... that is talent. But they write such godawful songs as Fast Times In Tahoe with a nasal fake American accent (even the video looks like a Sugar Ray vid.) But, the first line of Nirvana made me chuckle.
And being on Universal is not the sign of a good artist.

// and rubicon are on wildside.
Wildside have had some stinkers, man. You seem to be under the impression that crap bands don't get signed. Look around. Crap bands are signed all over the place.

Hehe, yeah, I wish elemenop would ditch their singer, he just gets on my nerves for some reason, perhaps without him I could look at their music more objectively.

And NiceGuy is right, crap bands are always getting signed, sometimes it seems as if almost all the music out is crap, but you just gotta dig a little deeper.

//you just gotta dig a little deeper
Not everyones a miner, buts that's where the gems are.

hahaha you have a long memory Heather

they are my definition of boring rock - not HDU
so if hdu are bad according to Lena o then what does that make these bands?..

If they're not his/her thing fine but why then pick on one the better examples of kiwi music?

sorry to state the blatanly obvious, but this site is a great place for finding the hidden gems

//this site is a great place for finding the hidden gems

EXACKERY! And they aren't even hidden here!

//Healthy to admit -- You have newbie issues.

Criticism is fair enough, but ultimately some of it boils down to personal opinion.

You might also find that explaining your reasoning rather than saying "sucks farts out of dead seagulls" helps others reading these forums to understand your criticisms.

//Alright what sort of bands do you like? Lets see how impeccable your music tastes are.
lena o follows the terrorist/guerilla philosophy, as used so effectively by Mr Bin Laden, that is, that it is easier to attack than defend.

My final point would be to suggest that next time you attend your anger management sessions, you might wish to discuss with your therapist your anal fixation with birds.

Yeah, its the most annoying thing when you read a review of a CD or live performance or something that was obviously written by somebody who has absolutely no interest in the genre of music being played at all. Almost all the time they cant help but be really critical about it.

//You have newbie issues.
limegreen is right on the money, as usual.

//MOST NZ MUSIC SUCKS
lena o, if you want to be taken seriously, show a bit of perspective.

//take hdu as an eg- what utter shite
Your taste in music doesn't appear to have any depth or breadth. So far you have made rude comments about Tadpole, The Feelers, Salmonella Dub, Tool and now HDU. How about you just fuck off until you can open you mouth without spouting so much noxious shit, eh?

The pink-tutued good fairy has spoken (strongly).

I'm really glad I didn't bother with the 'good fairy' post because you would've beaten me to it.

Every now and then I think it's good to vent - keeps everyone on their toes. "ooo, watchit, she may be wearing a tutu, but man, she's got a mouth on her..."

This guy is ripping me off

And you're not exactly a pioneer y'self.

Healthy to admit: this topic is a dead horse.

couldnt agree w u more lena o. New Zealand has tried with limited success over the last 50 years to follow the trend of modern music. i can think of only Split Enz, Crowded house ever making it big in the US, UK, Europe.....whereas australia has had fare more success (INXS, Bee-Gees, The Seekers, etc) and thats not due to our small population either.

Are you serious about listing the Bee Gees as good music? After all your bitching about pop being crap that must be lashed with something and fucked somewhere before being killed in some silly way?

Shit shit shit - attribute Idle Faction comments to ME!!! I do not speak for Idle Faction.

(Well, occasionally I do - but not when I am logged in as Idle Faction...)

idle.

i am NO FAN of the bee gees, seekers or whatever, i was just using them as an example, if you know what i mean.

The Bee Gees were/are Poms not from Oz, though they did live there for a shortish while. Lots of so-called Oz artists are in fact ex-pat poms (Mr J Barnes for eg.)

But then I am not really sure what the point is anyway ... it is just as healthy to admit that most Oz music sucks ... just like most Brit, Euro, US, music. It is only the cream that ever rises to the top.

lucifer sam, crowded house have sold 29 million albums worldwide, how big does it have to be to qualify

People are always going to like whatever the hell they want, because, lets face it, everyone is different. If that means they love Kiwi music then awesome. If that means they don't, no one can hold that against them. Personally I think we should support NZ tunes, but, for sure, not at the expense of our own tastes. I won't pretend to like a band just because they are New Zealanders, but there are plenty of wicked NZ bands: Fur Patrol, Lucid 3, Wellington's own Odessa. But I know lots of people who don't like any of those bands, and many more that do.
Each to their own, right?

So true Mystik! each to their own.... :-)

Don't you just love it when people join up, and in less than a week are trying to stir shit up but look like utter fools with absolutely no knowledge of what they're talking about?
Leave it to Saul, Lena O.

www.knowyourrole-shutyermouth.com ]

yeah, watch the slow evolution towards respect-worthy posts... gotta love it.

Although, with some members, it never happens, and they disappear into nzm oblivion after a while...

Dust, did you just move topics from the bar into other forums? Or was I seeing things?
*shakes head furiously*

//Leave it to Saul
I worked out that one of the reasons I love the reformed Saul's comments is that his icon looks a bit like an amiable-but-impish kid with chocolate on his face. Every one-liner is thus infused with this kind of cherubic glee.

Lucifer_sam's kinda taken over the pariah role, but even his venomous hatred for pop is so over-the-top to be entertaining.

mmmm.

lurk and learn has never really caught on.
Or lurk before you leap.

"...consider the art of flaming before pulling out the flame-thrower. Any wannabe with an email account can ignite a firestorm of ill-conceived and boring flames. It takes diligence and creativity to pull off an artful flame."(Virginia Shea)

hahahaha! lurk before you leap! hahaha!

oh, how I love puns..

gawd. you guys are making me paranoid. as a nzm newb, im going to have to be mature and quiet. ass.

You don't have to be quiet or mature, just as long as you're not a complete wanker.

Besides - anyone who takes a job getting punched in the face to see free gigs is OK by me.

//You don't have to be quiet or mature, just as long as you're not a complete wanker

That's 'you' in general - not you in particular. It sounded less rude in my head.

Better to be hated than to be ignored, eh Lena O?

boyeah,.. man what an adventure this forum has been... and to get to the bottom and read that is pure goodness, nice work NiceGuyEddie

Leno o.
Care to clarify?
Or are you to ignorant and arrogant to even give your reasons?

Let me be the first to say 'Idiot'

Lets cut the crap & critique where criticism is due- take Lena o as an eg- what an utter wanker.

hahahaha! lashed! I never get tired of that cutnpaste routine!

Will, you're a classic!

and back to the topic- lena O- maybe you should've traded places with me this past week to see what NZ music has on offer. I was just privileged enough to watch 4 blindspott shows down south which absolutely blew me away, they have got to be one of the best live acts i've seen, including international acts. Then if that wasn't enough, 3 of the shows had Mother Guru opening for them and if you haven't seen those guys rock out live yet then you're truly missing out because they would have to be my fave band in the country at the moment and i would say for a very long time because it's gonna take a lot for me to be more impressed by a bands live show than what i was by MGs dunedin performance. They absolutely went off on an international level, i'd have to say they topped my Incubus in Wellington experience. Also though not being much of a punk fan i really enjoyed Foamy Ed who also supported blindspott , and i mean i really don't like punk music, i guess that's because i've only heard it from out of NZ before but this all girl NZ punk band went off!! NZ Music ROCKS!!!

I would have to agree, there are a handful of nz bands who do preform at an international level.

typo - perform.

oops silly me, that's what happens when you use someone elses computer without asking, that was my comment, i forgot to sign in.

THERE IS A VERY GOOD NZ BAND. I THINK THEY ARE CALLED ALL BLACKS.
THEY GOT A BIG HIT. "HAKA" (HEHEHEHE)
FACE IT, MOST NZ BAND SUX.
EXCEPT FOR RITALIN.
RITALIN ROCKSSSSS!!!!
HEY RELAX, IN FIVE OR SIX YEARS THERE IS GOING TO BE A NZ BAND THAT IT'S GOING TO BLOW THE WHOLE WORLD HEAD!! TRUST ME.
