please help my dreads!!

i'm trying to dread my hair but it's not working because they just keep coming out, i was using this dread wax stuff, and was twisting my hair then teasing it with a comb...but it doesn't seem to be working too well, can anybody tell me what i can do to make them work!!??

Forums: The Bar,

pay for it. it'll work and won't look shit. seriously.

I met this really cool girl who used to have dreads. She'd written a really funny thing about people who get dreads done at a hairdresser, as opposed to people who get out eggs and string and do it themselves.

Professionally done dreads end up all the same size with neat sections, DIY dreads have a messier, less uniform look. That chick from Steps had salon dreads, so be careful.

//Professionally done dreads end up all the same size with neat sections

you only have the really neat sections for a few weeks.

yeah, but some of us have jobs where they just won't do.

bleach the crap out of them and then get a dog comb and backcomb/teash them for about 5 minutes, wrap them in a pipe cleaner and put perming solution onto them, wash it off and youre done

wow...never heard of that one :S
when i do dreads in peoples hair, this is what i do...
1 - i do them in rows, start from the bottom, work your way around.
twist, tease knot back comb...basically fuck up the hair as much as you can until it resembles a fluffy looking dread.
2 - continue around till you get to the top. they will all be fluffy, but thats ok.
3 - trim the fluffy parts off
4 - was them all down, it will be sticky for about a week, but it's so worth it.

just keep touching it up as new hair grows in, aldo try not to get them wet. :)

also wash youre hair with salt about 3 times a week when there new, shampoo is okay but not often, around once a week, NEVER use conditioner

nonbreed...just curious, how often do you wash your dreads? once, twice a week? don't you find they get itchy if you wash them too often?

// also wash youre hair with salt about 3 times a week when there new

you're supposed to keep them totally dry for the first two weeks to allow them to strengthen. then you do the saltwater thing after that so they swell and bind.

I washed mine with apple cider vinegar. It smelled much nicer.

I'll admit I had mine done professionally, but they were waist-length extensions, which I really couldn't do myself.

And for the love of Pete, please don't put patchouli in your hair. Everyone within ten feet of you will hate you, and rightfully so. I don't know what it is with people and patchouli and their dreadlocks, but that shit is just not right.

Vinegar is good to wash your hair with anyway. I think it's because the acidity of vinegar is the right level for skin, so it doesn't cause dandruff or itching. I think it also makes hair shiny. Not that I've ever tried it. Instead I spend $$$ on getting the nice shampoo that doesn't make my hair fluffy.

about twice a week with salt, once with shampoo because people dont like it when they stand next to smelly, hoary, dirty dreads.:D

but dont they get horey if you wash them...
i hardly ever wash mine and they don't smell bad or get itchy or anything. they just smell like hair and bees wax. if i wash them, they feel turbo gross. meh.

nah they stay togeather fine ah, in summer its more important to have nice smelling dreads thou

I used to wash my dreads with hemp soap, which they used to sell at the body shop, but don't make anymore, and then once a month with water from boiled rosemary... it stops the dandruff.

also when forming the dreads use a hot hair drier to melt the wax right in, and pet combs, with the metal teeth are the best, they don't break off at all and leave little bits of comb in your hair.

thanks everybody, sadly i can't get them done professionally because i have no money...but i'll try the other stuff that you guys have said

go to this site and then the instructions page, it even has pictures wich should basicly tell/show you how
i cannot emphasise enough how helpful this site is

er- ¿die & be reborn as a black person?

Or inyour case Leno o. Just die.

in your case does dj stand for dickless joke

thats the hardest i've laughed in 3 days!

thanks protozoaco

Braid your hair?

It does two things: one, you will have some idea of what you may look like with dreads, they will be thinner rather than thicker though.

two, if you leave them in long enough, they will naturally dread. Washing them actually helps becasue you twist them around and i guess shampoo gets stuck in them...

it takes like 6 months to accuire natural dreads, a friend did it and his hair was shit untill it finally dreded

i washed my hair with salt last night and i put more dread wax in it this morning and its looking a bit better so yaaaaaaaaay!!

only wax youre dreads often for about 2 weeks, then just let them go normally they get tighter and thats what you want?

yup, thanks
