1. Music Standards--At Pensacola Christian College, we feel it important that our students learn to appreciate and be involved in music that enhances their Christian testimony. Therefore, students are encouraged to listen to classical, semiclassical and good Christian music. The fine arts staff of the College acknowledges its responsibility to provide musical experiences designed to develop the appetites of our students for such music.
The following types of music are not permitted:
a. Current popular music
b. Jazz, rock, rap, folk, "Nashville" type, or new age music
c. Religious music performed in the folk, western rock, or gospel rock style
d. Soundtracks from movies rated PG-13, PG, or below
[page 14]
Because the easy-listening music on local radio stations is consistently rock music, the only station we recommend in Pensacola is 89.5 Rejoice Radio.
2. Music Checks--It is the students' responsibility to be certain they listen to music that meets the college standard. Music that does not meet the standard must be turned in immediately. Students who have questions regarding specific tapes, records, or CDs should turn them in to the residence manager to be checked. Approved music will be returned to the music. Unsuitable music will be retained by the College until the semester concludes. Headphones and earphones should not be brought to the campus.
the rules are crazy...
no extra studying during exams?
not allowed to own an electric guitar or amplifier? (I wouldnt survive)
popcorn machines can only be used in the laundry?
There is no way that I would ever choose to go there ... but, in their defence...
1. It is a privately run university. They are allowed to make their own rules.
2. It's not like they are secretive about it being a Christian institution. It is called Pensacola Christian College.
3. If you were to choose to go to an openly Christian institution, then presumably you actually subscribe to a christian faith that gels with them, you would probably not be into rampant hedonism, or even want to listen to dirty rock music.
4. There are thousands of colleges and universities in the US, including an enormous number with no religious affiliation, many that would be cheaper, many that would be easier to get into, and many that are better from an academic perspective. Thus, you would really have to want to go there, to actually go there.
5. Plenty of people go there, and enjoy it. Follow this link for a site rating all colleges in the US http://www.studentsreview.com/FL/Pensacola_Christian_College.html
6. The person(s) who created that site were obviously the people who didn't like it, and are thus quite biased in their outlook.
It's about choice really. A private organisation has created this place, a few people choose to go there. And probably none of us would.
Thankfully New Zealand's universities have no religioius affiliations, and are funded by the government, but are administered by independent councils representing a great many interest groups. Thus, they tend to be free and open places.
Oh, and despite that seriousness, the site is pretty funny : )
The biggest issue highlighted on the site was that most students aren't aware of how stringent the rules are until after they've started there. The site is promoted as allowing potential students to make an informed decision about going there, rather than being ambushed. The cost of attending college is so high, most people can't just pick up and leave if they don't like it.
I read the FAQs and this guy has had every expected accusation thrown at him, and has offered some really fair responses.
Disgusting.
Absolutely Disgusting.
If i lived in the area, i'd love to smash that place up.
Did anyone read all the stuff about clothes? No bangs or sideburns allowed?! No hair touching the colar?!
God. And women can't go swimming in the company of men?! It disgusts me more than anything that they think they have the right to repress young people.
Spend Thanksgiving at home.
Form a band.
Get a job at the Gap (girls).
Rent a video.
Own a fish.
Have a three-day weekend.

Lock your door.
Pick at the guitar while sitting on your bed.
Go to a church with less than 5000 people.
Take a girl out to eat.
Read a Superman comic.
Laugh too loud.
Check the answering machine.
Turn up your stereo.
Go on a road trip.
Surf the internet.
Socialling. While socialled, a student may have no communication with another student of the opposite sex except in in classroom or preapproved situations.
If you think that's extreme, you should check out the restrictions placed on people by other religions, especially ones that treat women like second class citizens.
It's scary enough to think that a bunch of people sat down around a table and decided "let's make sure that they don't succumb to the inevitable lather of lustful frenzy when they see someone of the opposite gender" and then went through every possible scenario and made rules about where and when they can hang out, whether they're allowed to touch each other, and what they can wear.
But bloody hell! Some staff member complains that someone was singing too loudly at a prayer meeting so they make a rule. Someone plays some "Christian Rock" too loud, and they make twenty rules. Someone studies all night, and does better than anticipated in exams - make a rule. Someone dines at a restaurant and notices a lady wearing a backless top - make a rule - oops, better check out *all* the restaurants in the area... I mean - sheeit! Wouldn't take too long for the admin to be reflex reaction.
