Hair Gel VS Petroleum Jelly

Everytime I use Hair Gel it always dries up everytime i put it in after i wash it when its wet and when its dry it rejects it. But whenever I use Petroleum Jelly in my hair to touch up on it, it seems to hold a whole lot better! I've been using that Wella Extra Hold gel recently but it doesn't hold as well as it says. Just wondering if there is a better hair gel out there thats not too expensive but still decent.

And also just wondering if Petroleum Jelly is safe to use in ur hair? My friend referred it to me and said it was and some chicks even used it.

Forums: The Bar,

Hair Products - There Can Be Only One. Don't mess around with prissy namby-pamby polly-pressy-pants gel or hairspray or anything. Fudge, you fool, Fudge, I tell you!

Before trying one and deciding you don't like it, make sure you've seen all the different types and strengths. Their range is surprisingly diverse, considering it all comes in an identical orange pot.

..and honestly, it's worth the cost. You don't need much - it lasts for ages.

I use to use Fudge, it's even worse than gel. It makes thick hair thicker also. The orange pot is quite nice. You weren't referring to Fudge as in Fudge gel they sell in hair salons were you?

Yup. The tip for young players though, as I mentioned, is that they have a few different types. There's big differences in consistency between the liquorice, varnish, putty and shaper, and then I think you can also get different strengths of each one.

fudges is bad for me, to bad i have thick hair :/

try some wax or mud.

egg white works a treat. there's some real holding power for you...

Can't wait for your follow-up post..."My wife used to do this in our pre-married days when I'd stayed out too late. She'd get about a dozen eggs, whip them up and spike my shampoo with them..."

egg white might hold well but its nothing compared to Candlewax!

// My wife used to do this in our pre-married days.

not too far from the truth. although I do now trust her with a pair of scissors and my hair, whereas once, perhaps not.

// egg white might hold well but its nothing compared to Candlewax!

it depends how well you cook the egg : )

I find that Cheap-arsed Gel from the Supermarket at The Palms to be pretty good. It's in a grey/silver pot, and is only like $5.00

You should have a look for it.

Man, Wella Extra hold gel is one of the strongest gels going around. You must have some mad hair but try green Dax, its used as a cheap way to form Dreadlocks.

If all else fails go the Vaseline.

GO THE DAX! orrrrr alternatively...in the supermarket.....wella balsom or what ever the fuck its called have wax...blue pot...like $4-5. its pretty fuckin good aye. keep it in a cool place in that shit aint movin! :D

OK...

I have very very thick hair and lots of it. My first suggestion to you, is, not to use gel. Why? Because it's absolute crap! If you have the right hair style, even with unruly hair, it shouldn't need much product. I use a tiny bit of 'molding paste' which costs about $30 but is well worth it, seeing you only need a pea sized ammount each time you use it (it stays in so everytime you wash, basically). This stuff may look costly, but it lasts. Plus it gives your hair a nice sort of feel, and doesn't smell too bad either.

But please do not use gel or mouse, it is terrible. It makes your hair look greasy for a start.

Oh and a salon i went to (a really good place) also used it,

oo yay, one of my favourite things to discuss......

i like to go for the "just out of bed" look for my hair - or as clint, one of my work mates, likes to call is "jenni's RANDY hair do"....go figure.

basically, best products i've ever used is fudge. though, with the cut/style i've got going at the moment, that tends to be a bit to thick [i have quite fine hair]. i go for hold factor 2. and ONLY put it in my hair if it is wet, preferably freshly washed. i also tend to keep a small amount on me so that when my hair dries a bit more i can put it through for the "poofy effect".

if you want a good "gel" achilles - try the 'out of bed' range from L'Oreal FX system - this stuff is great, nice firm hold that lasts for hours. though, not good to put on dry hair - it tends to knot your hair when you put it in and can hurt when you're brushing your fingers through. this stuff is about $12 i think....one downside - i've been asked why i'm carrying round a pot of cum a couple of times.....must be the colour *cough*

another semi-good cheap gel is the stuff you can get from farmers for like $3.99 or something, it does seem to disappear over the day though, but if you put it on just after you've washed your hair it styles well. if you mix this stuff with 'sunsilk shape and texture wax' you've got a nice product there.....

thats about all i can offer at the moment, without wanking on toooo much. also, you should note - i'm one of those freaks that washes and re-styles her hair EVERY day, no matter what. so most of my suggestions are suited to that routine of things.....the whole "keepings wax in for ten months" thing grosses me out.

you posted all that about "just out of bed" hair? my technique for this is:
1) go to bed.
2) get up.
for extra goodness shower at night so you go to bed with wet hair.

ARGH!

CARL?!

Do NOT go to bed with wet hair. You'll get sick. For god's sake....didn't your mother ever tell you those scary stories about people getting ill from going to bed with wet hair?!

//people getting ill from going to bed with wet hair

sounds like something only a mother would say.

For extra extra goodness shower at night and put in product. It does mean you have to wash your pillow case (although depending on your skank factor, picking up the previous week's hair product from your pillow might be a good thing).

//"jenni's RANDY hair do"

that kind of implies it's extra knotty on the back of your head ...

//for extra goodness shower at night so you go to bed with wet hair.

what Peaches said is true. my friend once grew mould on her scalp and in her hair from going to bed with wet hair, it took 3 days to get out. gross

//that kind of implies it's extra knotty on the back of your head ...

got it in one....though, i generally get the knots out before i go to work.....thin hair real easy to get knots out of

i used to go to bed with wet hair all the time, i never got sick or mould on my scalp. ehhh. gross.

Mould might be less of a problem in a warm climate....

So does anyone here know anyone or themselves who uses Petroleum Jelly in their hair?

after all these suggestions you are still on about this Petroleum Jelly?! lol I wouldn't use it, why don't you try out the products mentioned above, which are specially designed for hair, rather than use something not designed for hair use.

having said that, if you really want to know i can ask my mother who is a hairdresser, although i could do without her giving me funny looks.

well i just asked my mum - she's a hairdresser also - she said its okay to use it and that it doesn't damage your hair, it's just like dax wax apparently. though, she said its best to use proper products that you actually spend money on, cause otherwise you're hair will turn to shit - and the only way to get rid of hair that has turned to shit is to cut it off.

are you just looking for the cheap way out achilles?

well yeah im a bit strapped for cash n all. but maybe i'll try some of the suggestions you guys made. but myabe i'll just use petroleum jelly to just touch up my hair after its been saturated by other "expensive" products.
