Apparrantly there is a huge hype in Switzerland at the moment, as we had in the 1995 challenge. I find this funny because all they have really done is bought the cup from us. If you look at Alinghi (design crew as well as sailors) all the key ingredients are KIWIs.

I just dont buy the "professional era" of sailing excuse. I've heard every point of view and basically it's just a destructive thing to do to Auckland and New Zealand. Thank you so much for all you've done to our home, in order to be professional.

Why should Coutts and Butterworth be barred from working in their chosen profession? They are sailors and sailing is their job. The stigma of selling out doesn't apply here because professionals can and should take opportunities to further themselves. Russel Coutts is now the most successful Americas Cup racer of all time. Why shouldn't he be allowed to acheive that goal? Loyalty to his country? Bollocks.
The Americas Cup is not the Olympics. Team NZ was brand name.
Think of yachting being like motorsporrt where people support the likes of Ferarri or Maclaren, not where the company comes from.

indeed. you do see national flags in F1: usually a bunch of Italian and German flags as schumacher wins another race in his ferrari. (having said that, there's probably a fair number more ferrari logo flags, but, as brands go, that's a pretty cool one to supporst)
anyway, unlike the nationalism on show at the America's Cup, this form of support doesn't (as far as I know) spread to the dissing of opponents on 'foreign' teams. I'm sure the Germans don't accuse Schumacher of being a traitor when he wins the German Grand Prix ahead of a BMW, for example.
It's just a pity Coutts had to take the cup away from the team he won it for in the first place. I'm sure the vitriol wouldn't have been so sharp had Chris Dickson walked away with the trophy.

All the reports that I've read have said that tourist numbers are expected to keep growing. Housing prices will probably fall and drinks prices along with them but that's not a bad thing.
If anything was harmed in this Americas Cup, it was the NZ's repuation of being able to build high tech stuff cheaply. Three major breakages in five races is pretty damaging if you ask me.

We were going to lose the cup sooner or later, it is just a case of whether the Auckland council/ the Government have planned well for this incident. That is what will make or break the long-term effects of the interest that the America's Cup has generated.
