this was posted in another thread but obviously people are upset/annoyed/pissed/confused as to why M2 is being taken of the air, so this thread is to reach as many people as possible to see if we can communicate in mass numbers and convince TVNZ they are making the wrong decision. TVNZ said on bfm that it's for financial reasons without any real specifics.
the easiest thing to do is email TVNZ and express your disappoinment and why you are disappointed. maybe even ask what it will take to keep M2 on the air. this is a golden opportunity to see how powerful one voice can be.
if you're reading this and enjoy M2 - or don't watch it but can see the benefits for nz music - there's no excuse for making no effort to keep M2 on the air.

For example, instead of having 6 hours a night for 3 nights, have 4 hours a night for two, or something...I know it's not the same, but I just can't work out why they've ditched the whole lot.

I disagree with you. I don't believe that M2 was ever a good spend of the budget. I don't believe that it reached as many people as it could've / should've.
I do believe that its scheduling was a fairly shabby and transparent attempt to eat into what was (at the time) the growing popularity of Juice (ever notice that M2 exactly replicated the times when Juice on Sky TV was free to air (that is - free to anyone without a sky decoder). Given the vey frosty relationship between TVNZ and Sky at the time this could be viewed as a fairly cynical attempt to steal market share from Sky.
I'm interested in what wil happen now. The govt. are putting some fairly big emphasis on music right now. They can't control TVNZ (although a govt agency TVNZ is charged with making a profit that they then give back to the govt to spend) There must be(?) something else in the wings? Something better than M2?? Might that be possible??
Finally, I am not a 'traitor' to the 'cause' of nz musc - is nz music a 'cause'?? I've never thought of it as such -more a special indigenous art form that I get a lot of pleasure from.

One of the interesting things in my opinion is that this happens hot on the tails of the much-paraded TVNZ charter. Having not read the charter, I'm not sure of the exact wording, but I would be 99% sure that the charter is very big on promoting NZ culture. To kill a project that clearly had promoting NZ music in mind seems to be in clear breach of this. Is anybody talking about this angle? You guys should be doing your best to really embarrass TVNZ over this.
Nonetheless, I'm not sure how much showing vids in the middle of the night helps NZ music. I guess it helps us if we know how to program our vcr's...

While I will admit and apologise that 'traitor' and 'cause' were utter bullshit (yes ta for pulling me up I think I had one hand on the joystick and one hand on the mouse!) I still believe that any music programming is better than none (unless you're talking top 40 hits which m2 was not about). Also, I'd like to see what they put on instead, cause I hardly watch TV, but late night video watching with cones was certainly a nice way to end an evening. Finally TV is not the answer, but it's a little bit of extra exposure that local 'alternative' acts can get since they dont have the backing of any Maja Labels who pretty much run the likes of Channel Z and Pepsi Chart.
