Damn, it's really disappointing to hear that. The thing I think I'll miss the most is the videos from New Zealand artists played on Number 8. It's not just the opportunity to hear new music from new local groups, but also seeing the videos themselves and the talented filmmakers this country has. M2 was good especially with the video scheme where they made videos for groups.
I hope TVNZ keeps on supporting New Zealand artists in this way. Squeeze is good for behind the scenes stuff, interviews and profiles, but I'd like to see a program devoted to showing off music videos of New Zealand acts.
Contact was THE best bnet station IMO. I live in Auckland at the moment, and I tell you it kicked bFM's sorry white arse. Diversity was the key to Contact's success: they played a wide variety of good music - old and new - and didn't only play house/techno/drum and bass/whatever, plus, the presenters were friendly and down-to-earth, not the kind of wankers resident at b. I loved the Top 13 on Wednesday evenings (I've still got a few shows on tape) and the Talkback on Sunday nights - I lived for the latter show in particular, it was better than Bomber's programme by far.
What's on the 89FM frequency in Hamilton now? A mate says it's some sort of Channel Z clone.
"The Generator" (or, less affectionately, degenerator) - it is a kind of Channel Z clone, but sounds like they bought all of their music quite some time ago - it's had a very old and low rent sound every time I have heard it. Funnily enough, I spent quite a while on Wednesday chattering to a former Contact (and present Control) DJ, who could fill me in on the old days: sounds like it was a good place to be, rather in the mould that Control has tried (and seems to be currently battling management) to maintain.
