Say you were going to a gig at the idigo on saturday night and say you wanted a place to meet and greet before hand, that wasn't r 18, yes I know I am over 40 but Gina Lash, Megaccino and Jon jr. are not.
The place still needs to nice and a good place for a cup of tea and bit of a chinwag, yet cool enough that the locals will not be shamed by being there................where would you recommend?

Here are a few places I like hanging out at before a gig:
Fidels (top of Cuba) really close to all the venues, very good coffee and food and its full to the brim of 'hip' young wellington critters.
Bodega great place for a drink and if you get there at about 7:00 the bouncers arnt working the door so yeah ......... easy to get into, it is really nice and swanky with its new 'lounge' area and you can check out where alot bands play when they come to Welly. (corner Willis - Ghuznee)
Also the old bodega cafe is still open and you could go check out the real bodge, where the famous bands from back in the day used to frequent. (top of willis, away from the city)
Krazy lounge is close to Indigo and if your lucky you'll see one of the Marystaple boys other role as cafe kitchen bitch. (corner Cuba - Ghuznee)
Olive.......yeah well Eddy Vedder once went there soooo also one of the guys from the Phoenix Foundation work there....................um yeah (its directly opposite Indigo as well so I guess that a plus)

I used to like Midnight but they had shiet service for ages, the 'hey, im doing you a favour' attitude from the staff just put me right off, maybe its got better i'll go there today and check it out, its also always cold with all its windows open and tabels right by the front door............although I have heard amazing things about their museli.
In relation to Bodega I just thought that they could kill two birds with one stone (seeing a 'famous' Welly bar and getting a drink at the same time).
I guess if you wanted to keep it really 'real' you could take Disasteradio's advice and drink in the design school park, once you've polished of that dozen 'big can rans' roll round the corner to Liks for a bit of pre gig entertainment, either this or spray on your white pants and do the 'Courtenay circuit'

Midnight has the best food in town, best priced, and yummiest vege food. maybe it's cos i don't live in welly that i find it easy to go there and put up with the snooty service, but you really really gotta try their tofu burger, which sounds real hippi-ish, but is so goddamned un-tofu and yummy, it really tastes just like chicken but tastier ...

It is still the same... I will only go there if it is late at night and everything else is closed. But they have a note on the tip cup that says "Yes!, We ARE Flirting with you." That makes everything better. I thought they were...

Hmm - I have been to Midnight Expresso many a time, mostly after midnight but at other times too, and never had a problem with snooty/"doing you a favour" service. Its always been just fine. I have, on the other hand, had a can't really be bothered service from the Krazy crew.
