if one was to buy one's self a cellphone, what should one buy? should one go for telecom or vodaphone? do telecom still do 025 or only 027? if they do 025 is it even worth considering? whilst vodaphone slags the technology that 027 is built on, they are planning to use this technology in the near future. is this a good reason for one to avoid vodaphone? what kind of phones allow one full control over making one's own ringtones?
compare and contrast. please backup answers with reasons. please remember that one reading these answers may never have owned a cellphone before. (10 points)

I love essay tests!
One should not buy one's self a cell phone at all. One should not succumb to the pressures of society to be available for inane chatter at all hours, thus preserving one's soul. Cellphones have eliminated all courtesy from modern culture. Also, not purchasing a cellphone would protect one's brain from harmful radiation, and protect one's offspring from horrible mutations.

Yeah, instead you should spend your time not speaking to anyone, but writing inane messages on internet forums, subjecting yourself to the risk of RSI in your hands, arms, back and eyes, deep-vein thrombosis from sitting down for so long, and wonderful doses of electromagnetic radiation from your monitor.

hear hear velocity! i've found that having no cellphone has actually improved my life. now at the weekend friends get lost from other friends, unexpectedly bump into each other at totally random times and ring-ring interruptions are at an all-time low, and if interruptions occur they are welcome. cellphones steal the cool randomness and unpredictability outta life.

ouch, spanked. I think I shall retreat under my desk and hide from that electromagnetic radiation for a while. If only my RSI and deep-vein thrombosis didn't prevent me from actually moving...

I agree wholeheartedly. Exactly my reason for not having one. Or it could be that I'm too broke, I hate phones, I don't know enough people who would call me to make it worth my while, and I'm such a Luddite that I don't even have an answering machine. But your reason makes me sound like much less of a reclusive misanthrope, so I'll go with that. Yeah, go cool randomness of life!

i am currently undecided on this. on one hand, you have ignored the question being asked and gone off on a tangent. on the other hand, you have written what the examiner likes to hear. written very well of course, but perhaps not useful. the question was not 'should', it was 'if'.
//the question was not 'should', it ...
//the question was not 'should', it was 'if'.
Okay, then, velocity does the retake for carl's essay test.
//if one was to buy one's self a cellphone,
If one _were_ (learn how to use the subjunctive tense, people... it can only do you good) to buy one's self a cellphone, then I would be inclined to worry greatly about the future spawn of carl that may be condemned to a life of riding the short bus and wearing crash helmets and drooling down the fronts of their Bon Jovi t-shirts because their daddy thought it would make his life more convenient to use a tool that has a nasty side-effect of pumping radiation straight into one's brain, the long-term effects of which have not been studied, mostly because it wouldn't be good for business.
And please don't fail me for correcting your grammar. It's a compulsion. I had to do it. If I failed a test every time I corrected the instructor's grammar, I never would have made it through college.

I went Vodafone when I came back from the UK because I got really good service from them when I was over there. I get really good service here too.
I think the GSM phones are able to be used in more countries. There are five mobile telecoms companies in the UK (including British Telecom), and they all use GSM. I don't know who use that weird thing that telecom use. I guess it's not restricted to NZ.
Vodafone only do mobile telecoms, so it'd follow that Vodafone may supply a better service since that's their focus.
I've just got a lowly Nokia 3310, and it's got all the features I need (including ringtone composer and the like), and it's a nice shape and size. I have another really cool phone that I brought back from the UK, but I need to unlock the handset from my provider before I can change the SIM. I imagine that'll be a wee bit difficult from here. Bugger. Phones here will cost you an arm and a leg, but at least they're not locked.
I have a contract that costs me $30/month and I get 200 free offpeak minutes, and 20 free text messages. What's more, they assess my usage every six months and tell me if that's still the contract that suits me best. Cool, eh!
Really, I don't think it matters, probably they're much of a muchness, but I really like Vodafone and I'd recommend them to anyone.
Also, before I chose Vodafone my hair was dull and lifeless. Now it's shiny and bouncy! I feel like a new woman! Thanks, Vodafone!

this is the only area where i know anything about cellular technology. the weird thing that telecom uses? thats the new technology that everyone else (including vodaphone) will switch to for the next generation of phones. the ones that they claim will get rid of landlines. vodaphones main criticism of 027 is that more people use gsm so it must be better. i think nz is kinda a testing ground for the other one, i guess like we were one of the first countries to get eftpos.

Yeah, just spoke to my brother; he said the same thing. CDMA is way better than GSM, but noone's using it yet. At the moment though, because there's no market for it, if you want a good, reliable phone for your own personal use, you're better off going with GSM.

er - apparently Telecom is cheaper, but my brother has an identical plan to mine - $30 for 200/20.

just to clarify, my brother reckons that currently the CDMA phones (and the old D-AMP phones as well, if you want to go 025) are kinda dumb.

Was that polyphonic ringtones? or one with an inbuilt MP3 player?
You can buy phones over here (UK) that do polyphonic ringtones but not picture messaging, unless you buy a seperate plug in camera for the phone... similarly, you can buy phones that do the polyphonic thang and have a radio/mp3 player but no camera and even one that does it all! But you're talking crazy money for those phones (£200+ and thats just for the phone!)

one thing you MUST concider, if one lived mainly in the rual south island one may find that one may not have coverage.
For instance carl you do know where i live, it's not way out in the sticks, but the is no vodifone coverage here, it starts about 1kg closer to town, and telecom works in the garden but not in the house.
But if you are in a city stuff like that is not important.

CDMA is used in Asia. That is why most of the new 027 phones are hyundai and samsung, rather than Nokia and stuff. This is also why companies like Motorola are a bit jittery, cos if the big switcheroo to CDMA comes, they're not well prepared for it.
I'd just buy a cheap phone (or you could get a brick like mine). If you were to end up in Britain or somewhere, you can probably just get another GSM phone cheaply.
The GSM implementation in NZ also works on much higher powered transmitters than Telesatan. Don't fry your brain : )

I really like the Motorola T191.
I have the T190 which is really awsome, but nothing when compared to the latter.
This is the key features of the T191:
Funsized and funpacked, the ultra slim and compact Motorola Talkabout 191 offers premium looks and features at an affordable price. It is designed to be simple to use with fun features such as animated and downloadable ringer tones. The Chat Pack provides great messaging features so that staying in touch with those that matter is easy.
Phone book profiling with Icon
SMS up to 10 pals at one go
SMS chat messaging
Downloadable Animated Screen saver
Download ring tones via SMS
(and on my t190 you can make your own ringtones, so i guess you can on this to...)

you have highlighted the ignorance i was trying to avoid. can i talk on it? some companies have better coverage. these companies will not be honest about this. does reception fade, or drop out suddenly? which do you prefer? can i text to all other phones? are phones which try to guess what i want to say useful or just annoying?
and i must be able to make my own ringtones.

Um - unless your writing it in full in a chat room, but shit that's more about community and we don't all see each other in person anyway.
Hell, I hate landlines.
