If one _were_ (learn how to use the subjunctive tense, people... it can only do you good) to buy one's self a cellphone, then I would be inclined to worry greatly about the future spawn of carl that may be condemned to a life of riding the short bus and wearing crash helmets and drooling down the fronts of their Bon Jovi t-shirts because their daddy thought it would make his life more convenient to use a tool that has a nasty side-effect of pumping radiation straight into one's brain, the long-term effects of which have not been studied, mostly because it wouldn't be good for business.

this is the only area where i know anything about cellular technology. the weird thing that telecom uses? thats the new technology that everyone else (including vodaphone) will switch to for the next generation of phones. the ones that they claim will get rid of landlines. vodaphones main criticism of 027 is that more people use gsm so it must be better. i think nz is kinda a testing ground for the other one, i guess like we were one of the first countries to get eftpos.

er - apparently Telecom is cheaper, but my brother has an identical plan to mine - $30 for 200/20.

You can buy phones over here (UK) that do polyphonic ringtones but not picture messaging, unless you buy a seperate plug in camera for the phone... similarly, you can buy phones that do the polyphonic thang and have a radio/mp3 player but no camera and even one that does it all! But you're talking crazy money for those phones (£200+ and thats just for the phone!)

my old telecom phone had no coverage whatsoever out where i live, but my swanky new vodafone one still recieves txt messages and even the occasional phone call! definately get a vodafone.

you have highlighted the ignorance i was trying to avoid. can i talk on it? some companies have better coverage. these companies will not be honest about this. does reception fade, or drop out suddenly? which do you prefer? can i text to all other phones? are phones which try to guess what i want to say useful or just annoying?
and i must be able to make my own ringtones.
