Forums: NZ Music,

Nice gig, hot and sweaty. A pixies song.... 'Gigantic'was cool to see live.... I really only recognised the breeders singles (not being thier hugest fan).... Kelly deal playing violin on one song was outstanding : )
All in all... very cool gig. Indigo was packed out like I havn't seen in quite a while.
The band really seemed to enjoy themselves.....

At the Auckland show the mic (I think) that was attached to Kelley's violin wasn't picking up any sound. She was trying to get it to work, the stage manager came out trying to get some sound, but for most of the song Richard played the violin parts on his guitar or Kim sang them. Right at the end of the song they finally got the violin working and Kelley managed to get a few notes out before the song ended.

It could have been a Spinal Tap-esque rock moment (not unlike the scene in Spinal Tap where they're emerging from the pods), but Kelley was dealing with the situation with humour, and the rest of the band carried on really well. (I remember reading about how when Kelley first started playing in the Breeders and she'd sometimes miss her guitar parts, so Kim would sing them.)

But the best part came when the song ended and Kelley said, "I can play that really well!"

I think I'm still coming down from the experience. It was such an excellent show. (I'm avoiding the temptation of ending every sentence with an exclamation mark.)

Most of the songs they played were from Last Splash and Title TK, but there were a few older ones - including Gigantic. They also played a Kelley Deal 6000 song and finished with a Fear song. The singles got the biggest crowd reaction - Cannonball rocked the house. But I was really glad that the Amps song Bragging Party was played, cos that's one of my favourites. It was really fun jumping around to the faster, rockier songs.

Gigantic was an expected delight. I wasn't expecting it at all because I'd heard the stories that Kim didn't like playing her Pixies songs. The band had gone off stage and came back on for an encore. Jose was on drums, Richard on guitar and Mando on bass, and Kim was at her mic without a guitar. Kelley wasn't on stage for it. Mando started with the bass and there was this sudden ripple of energy surging through the audience as everyone began to realising what song was being played. Kim started singing and everyone around me (I was up the front) was singing along too. Kim was a little late coming in with the second verse, but it didn't matter because the audience was singing the part. At the end everyone was jumping up and down yelling "A big big love! A big big love!" and there was so much love there, maaaan. I think that song got the most cheers of the evening because it was so unexpected and so utterly brilliant.

Oh hey, here's a non-sequential set list. I'm pretty sure this is everything they played:

Happiness is a Warm Gun
Safari
Cannonball
No Aloha
Flipside
I Just Wanna Get Along
Divine Hammer
Saints
Drivin' On 9
I Just Wanna Get Along
Gigantic
Pacer
Tipp City
Bragging Party
Little Fury
Off You
Full On Idle
Huffer
Future Boy
I Don't Care About You
Buffy Theme

I'm going to to a big ol' review later. I heart the Breeders!

Oops, that should have been "Gigantic was an unexpected delight".

impressive recollection robyn!

//that should have been "Gigantic was an unexpected delight".
i think we know what you meant. well i did. am thoroughly peeved wellington has to host the breeders in such a tiny venue... should have been on to it anyways eh?

Jesus..! Good memory... you can't have been as drunk as me : )

Oh, it was nothing, really. I knew all the songs, so when I got home I went through all my Breeders CDs and remembered which songs they'd played. If I tried to do it now I'd be like "Uh... well I remember "Cannonball". And I had a few beers at the show (the Breeders have songs about beer, how could I not?).

Also, cheers to Geekboy for the photos. I especially like #4.

Yeah it was fucking wicked, but my knees hurt from that damn low stage. I nearly wet myself when they played Gigantic. My photos will be shit and sparse as my drunk friend took most of them and they're all from BEFORE the band started playing..because holding a camera and trying not to die in the front row was a bit of a mission. Goooooooooooooooooooooooo the Breeders. I enjoyed Kelley's facials and her shirt. Indeed.

Yeah - a really, really special gig for sure. It was just such fun being there singing lustily and leaping round as if the last 10 or so years just didn't happen - everyone with great big beaming smiles on.

As many people said to me that night 'Maaan, this is my adolescent dream come true'.

Such a lovely time.
