What to be? Drummer? Bass? Singer?

Hell, so many choices but which one?. Music is growing as we type, and I really have no idea what instument to play at all. There is drums, the back of the group where they are hardly noticed. Or the singer, the hype of the group, the motivater, then one if front. Bass and guitar are also other factors, both inbetween. What the hell do choose? (Apart from what is cheaper.) :P

Forums: The Bar,

what ever one you choose you will fall in love with... i chose bass to prep me for learning guitar, but very quickly gave away the idea of learning guitar as i liked bass so much. Theres no wrong pick, they're all good.

If you can sing you may want to learn a stringed instrument, so you can still be kind of up front. But then hteres not enough drummers around hehe.

Do them all! Seriously, that way you'll be able to play in about 4 different bands, and you'll have fun every bloody day of the week.

So, to be like the dude off the Foo Fighters? The problem is commiting to all of them. I have trouble sticking to one instrument, let alone 3 or 4?

well.. playing all instruments is a cool thing to be able to do, and you'll find you'll pick other ones up quicker later on.

Well I do bass...but I am teaching myself Guitar, and Sing. Plus one say i want to learn keyboards/piano accordian. Just try whatever you bloody well want to , i say!

And write lyrics/music.

// Well I do bass

I'm not surprised

I would say be a drummer because there is a chronic shortage of them.
that said, if you can't hold a beat it's best to just not be one

Go to a music shop, and hire an instrument, if you like it, think about buying it, if you don't like it, try another instrument

thats not a bad idea... but do you have any friends that play instruments.. or do still go to school?

because if you do ask to try a few things, see how they feel.

Bye some turntables man.
Failing that, an electric or semi-acoustic guitar wouldn't go astray...

buy some. i said BUY!

hmmm... guess there would be a shortage of them as well?

Well i still stand by learning a stringed instrument, the skills gained from it lead much better into other instruments... as you get finger mechanics down for other stringed instruments and keyed and you learn rhythm, which is required for all.

Although i will except there is an art to been a turntabler, and skills involved... i think its such an instrument (please no one debait this) that it does not lead into others. Anyhow, all the gear i've seen new and used costed quite a bit...

If you're still having trouble deciding, can I offer some advice?
1. If you want to play a musical instrument so that chicks will notice you, play guitar. Slung low. With distortion. Do not learn bass. You should probably consider getting tatoos and piercings too.
2. If you're in it for the music and you don't mind being ignored all the time, play bass.
3. If you have little musical ability, don't pick drums. The world already has too many crap drummers. Get some turntables instead, any munter can become famous spinning other peoples' music.

End of Rant.

I, for one, really dig bass players. Always have, ever since I discovered that males actually play bass. All the bass players at my old school were girls.

These days, if you play bass, you're also obliged to be a lead singer.

// Do not learn bass
ey? Girls love the bass players...

// I, for one, really dig bass players
See.

Although, admittedly, I learnt guitar first, before the flaw that our band had four guitar players and no bass player was pointed out to us by a wiser head. Being the tallest and therefore having the longest fingers, I was nominated for the supposedly 'uncool' position, and haven't looked back since.

Oddly enough, the same 'long fingers' theory was applied to me when I was 9 years old, at primary school, when the music teacher was gifted a bass recorder. It was lucky old me that got to learn how to play the thing, and, with my three siblings, all of whom are are within four years age of me (we played in order of age down the recorder tonal scale: Bass, Tenor, Treble, Piccolo, so cute!), proceeded to terrorise the primary school end-of-year concert with a frightening rendition of 'Cuckoo!' from the Sound of Music.

Sweeeeet! Thanks for the advice Fud...i'll start learning to play guitar tomorrow.

fud can you tap on a bass?

//fud can you tap on a bass?

Of course. And you can get away with it a lot easier than a guitarist can - i.e., without being labelled "wanky" and such.
The standard bass tapping technique is quite different from the traditional Eddie van Halen type thing, it's much more left-hand intensive. Check our website, go to the Media section and download the "AI" mp3 - there's a bass tapping riff I do in there which is pretty typical.

will do sir

Try anything but guitar, its so universal these days. Were lacking bassists and drummers.

there are alot more musical instruments to choose from than just bass, guitar, vocals and drums.

Indeed, just look at Heather Mansfield.

yep, bring on the erhu I say. Much cheaper to get than a theremin, too.

I picked up a Theremin kit from Dick Smith for $50 - you need to solder it all together but it works fine. Very weird.

$50?! wow, thats cheap!
i might go get one of those...

Are you hinting along the lines of Classical? Violen? Chelo?

no, i was hinting at anything other than what you listed. theres probably hundreds of instruments around that you've never even heard of.

i've always wanted a theremin...

Ha! I just *knew* we couldn't start this discussion without someone mentioning a theremin!

Actually, if you hadn't I would've...

I hear they are very hard to play.
I'll stick to trying to get my feeble noodle around a fret board.

Check my above post regarding theremins.
While we're on the subject of obscure instruments, how about:
Sarrusophone
Hurdy-Gurdy
Hammered Dulcimer
Chapman Stick
Serpent
Shawm
Doudouk
Koto
Shamisen
Shakuhachi

Wow, does Dick Smith do them as well? I must get myself a soldering iron...

Bring back those keyboards you wear like a guitar I say - a la Pseudo Echo.

complete with mullet. mmm.... sexy.

Damn - there's a band I have seen in the last two months that uses the keyboard strung around the neck, but no way do I remember which. Is it maybe Xanadu?

If you're going to have a mullet and a keyboard-guitar-thing, you've gotta have a piano-key tie to complete the ensemble.
Chicks dig it.

gotta love the 80s

Hey! I recognise that name...

Well, I wanted to learn Drums, but Mum and Dad said no, so I'm doing Bass. And the teacher is the guy who taught The Datsuns.

AHA! I have mullet. I am looking toward the art of the drums.

yes go the drums! its an awesome instrument to learn!!
i love playing the drums (its also a good instrument to let out your anger on!)

//its also a good instrument to let out your anger on

yes, but that can get expensive

yes i agree!
but its worth it the drums are a great instrument!

Not too sure about the mullet, but drums are definitely the way to go.

1. The little stool a drummer sits on is called a throne, which is entirely appropriate for the royalty of rock!

2. You don't need to retune after every song and piss off the punters. Leave that to the prima donna lead axe man! Just make sure you "quietly" play a few nice little buzz rolls, flams and paradiddles to annoy the guy on rythym.

3. Drummers get all the cutest chicks.

4. No band can make it without a decent drummer. The person behind the kit provides the heartbeat ... if you drummer is crap your band will be as well.

5. And best of all there is no volume control on a drumkit!!!!!!!

I agree with everything instead no3, sigh

Have no fear, cash converters be here!

cash converters are a rip off, seller/buyer beware!!
