Spooky

Just thought I'd take this one to the bar as it was posted on the Neil Finn Board and I thought non Neil Finn fans may be interested on what spooked me today...

Three days ago, Velocity posted this...

//The Fine Line, the venue where Mr. Finn played a little over a //week ago, burned down last night. Apparently the pyrotechnics //went awry and set the balcony on fire, and it all went south from //there. Having been in the Fine Line, I wonder why anyone would //think it's the appropriate place for pyrotechnics. It's way to //small to light off fireworks in there.

Pretty freaky, considering exactly the same thing happened today at a metal gig ten minutes out of Providence, killing at least 95 people!!!

Forums: The Bar,

Yeah at the great white gig. It's terrible news. The goddamn guitarist Ty is presumed dead, even his official website has declared him dead. I think the deathcount is 95.

// think the deathcount is 95

sorry I didn't see you've mentioned it already

when I heard it I thought, thats weird hmmm I'm sure velocity would have said if people were hurt then I twiged it was a new one.

whoa....can someone explain to me what happened? i don't get it.

The rock group 'Great White' were playing in a Rhode Island Nightclub. The '80s hard rock band Great White had just started playing Thursday night when giant pyrotechnic sparklers on stage began shooting up and ignited the ceiling above them and soundproofing near the stage. Some in the crowd said they thought it was part of the act, but the fire quickly spread through the low-ceilinged building, filling it with thick, black smoke. The nightclub, The Station, had recently passed a fire inspection, but didn't have a city permit for pyrotechnics. The building, which is at least 60 years old, was not required to have a sprinkler system because of its small size. Most of the bodies were found near the club's front exit, some of them burned and others dead from smoke inhalation. Some appeared to have been trampled in the rush to escape.More than 160 people were taken to area hospitals after Thursday's blaze. The blaze broke out at about 11 p.m. during the first song at the concert in West Warwick, about 15 miles southwest of Providence. Jack Russell, the bands lead singer said the band hadn't seen or heard from one of their members, Ty, since they were onstage together.

God, it's horrible what happened in RI.

At the Fine Line in Minneapolis everyone made it out safely, but the entire club was gutted by fire. The balcony collapsed and the whole building just crumbled. I mean, it's all made of wood in there. Who could possibly think that was a good idea?

I think its a pretty good bet that members of Great White and/or their management will be spending a fair amount of their future behind bars over this one.

I'm not sure anyone will go to jail over this. That's not what Americans do to their celebrities, washed up or otherwise. But there will be astronomical figures paid out in lawsuits, by the club, by the band, by management... anyone remotely connected.

i read the band was given the okay to use the sparklers and stuff? so i don't know how much they will get blamed...

never the less... absolutely tragic

Someone from the band said that, but there is little evidence of it and news has been surfacing that they had not given previous venues on their tour any indication of their pyrotechnics display.

I read a bit in the Sunday Star-Times that a lot of kiwi venues are really crap about fire safety - fire exits will be barred to stop people getting in free. The guy in the article said that if you're at all concerned about your safety, you should check the fire exits when you go to a gig, and if they're locked or barred, you should complain. Makes good sense to me.

I was thinking about this when I was leaving Indigo after the Breeders gig - the place was packed and, as far as I know, the only way out is down the stairs (or maybe over the balcony) - even without any kind of emergency, it was tough to get out.

I don't know why this hadn't come to my attention before, but it seems the day before the Fine Line burned down in Minneapolis, a club caught fire in Chicago. 22 people were killed, almost all of them trampled to death.
