Coffee

Ok, I admit this is a bit of a derivative topic, but coffee keeps popping up as a topic in chat and in forums.
So:
1. How do you like your coffee?
2. Who is your preferred provider in your neck of the woods?

Or what about that definitive coffee experience?
How long have you been hooked?
How did you catch the bug?

Forums: The Bar,

1. I usually get lattes when out, and drink plunger with milk when home. However, I also do double shorts, long blacks, and the occasional flat white. I went through a vienna phase a couple of years ago... but the cream got to me in the end

2. The Fix (good name)

1. Usually a latte. Sometimes with some hazelnut syurp, but mostly just a latte on its own.

2. It depends. Often I go to Sierra in Mt Eden, cos it's just down the road. If I'm in town I'll go to Brazil because it just rules so much. At the moment I'm doing a course thing in Kingsland, so I go to Roasted Addiqtion for my morning fix.

Oh, I remember it clearly. It was at a coffee place at Waikato Uni in 1996. I got a hazelnut latte, sat down, took a sip and was blown away. It was so good. I was hooked from that moment. I denied it, I even wrote an angry anti-coffee rant, but there was no going back. Oh, lovely brown liquid of the gods.

1. when im at home, i just drink black plunger coffee. when im out i'll either get a long black, latte or a cappucinno - with cinnimon, not chocolate.

2. theres a cafe called traffic in town, has nice coffee. also metropolis and iguanas. although i did get a nice cappucinno from muffin break yesterday.

i hate all those fancy coffee, starbucks frappicinnos and stuff. i never really got the flavoured coffee thing...plain ol' cuppa joe will do me nicely :)

1. I'm happy with pretty much anything. At home I just drink instant stuff. My favourite is actually chocolate milkshakes with a teaspoon of instant coffee. At coffee places I like mochaccinos. I also love chocolate coated coffee beans.

2. Not fussy. Anywhere but Starbucks.

How I caught the bug - I used to hate coffee, but after eating a box of coffee flavoured barley sugars, I loved it. Mmmmm.

I agree, any coffee is good as long as it isn't starbucks, and isn't polluted with milk and sugar.

// I also love chocolate coated coffee beans

Omigod, those things are dangerous! Eat them like lollies, then wonder why everything's going in slow motion, and why people keep saying to you "yyyoooooouuuuu'rrreeee taaaalllllkiiiiiiiinnnngggg toooooo ffffaaaaaaasssssssssssttt." My hands will still be shaking eight hours later.

Oh, so that's what was wrong with me. When I had 'em, they were all melted together, it was great. It was an excuse to eat several at a time, all day... "Oh, they're stuck together. Too bad, I guess I'll just have to eat the whole lot"

1)At home, black no sugar from a plunger (or as they say in the US, 'French Press'). Out, while I would love a long black, of which the closest thing that comes to it is called an americano (but is fairly uncommon), I alternate between lattes and short blacks.

2)Boston and most of America is the wasteland commonly known as Starbucksville. I had a very had time finding a place that was: (a)comfortable, played nice music and had a happy atmosphere and (b) served good coffee. I found many places that had either but not both. But funnily enough, one of the few nice places I found was one block from my work. It is called 'Flour' and I thoroughly recommend it if you are ever in Boston. A word of warning though, most stuff out of an espresso machine is at least $US3!! And I thought Wellington was expensive!

I've been hooked for about 10 years. My bug was caught last year of college at Espressaholic in Willis Street. When it closed down and eventually relocated in Courtneay Place it was never the same. Maybe it has something to do with them serving Robert Timms. Ewwww. In Wellington I mostly frequented 'The Ballroom'.

i like 3 tea spoons of coffe 1/2 sugar and plain boiling water, thats always good

Some people have already heard this story, but the weirdest coffee I've had is called 'chon'. The Vietnamese feed weasels coffee berries, and then extract the bean from the weasel crap and then roast and grind it. The indonesians apparently do something similar with some other random animal.
It's actually very good.
The Vietnamese like their coffee VERY strong. Like a triple short black but shorter, served in a shot glass. 'ca phe shua', which is supposed to be white coffee is the same, but with condensed milk in. Mmmmmmm. evil : )

thats nasty, think about it, they pay people to look through weasel shit

i like the old "nes cafe" myself.
With two sugars dammit!

i HATE coffee and tea.I can't understand why either are so popular...i'd rather have a milo or something ;)

Yeah all hail Milo!! I hate coffee, only drink tea if there's nothing else to drink

yesss i just dont know why people like coffee so much?
i would just stick with the milo thanks!

hmmm. refer to robyn's post.
we'll see whether you are still of that view when you get to 25.
coffee drinking is like the teen growth spurt. it happens to different people at different times, and some never do ....
you guys aren't out of the 'dangerzone' yet.

i hated coffee from the first time i tried it!

// i hated coffee from the first time i tried it!

That's exactly what I mean. It's a bit like beer (or in fact most alcoholic beverages, possibly excluding cider). Nobody usually likes it on the first try, and then one day a little ephiphany happens.

I've tried coffee heaps of times, still taste's bad.

shit yes. milos by far the best and you can't go wrong when you've got a iced chocolate. mmmm

i like the smell of tea, but it tastes horrible. And has anyone tried green tea ice cream? mmm mmmm!

//you can't go wrong when you've got a iced chocolate

i can't get the hang of those things. the whole "cubes of ice in chocolate milk and covered with lashings of cream" just doesnt really do it for me. why would you put water in milk? ewww.

a good ol' frappachino is always good

i like my coffee with a little water.

emphasis on the 'little', eh carl?

I am not religuos, but coffe is my personal god.
Coffee, 2 sugars and milk.
Many a day... keeps the sleep away

i've only just recently started drinking coffee...i was walking down town back at the end of december and i walked past this little coffee shop, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee just smacked me right in the face, from then on i started craving coffee and decided to give it a go.

1. at home i drink heated up milk with instant in it. two sugars. and out i drink latte with two sugars.

2. i quite like fuel coffee, there's one by st pauls apartments off molsworth st, one on willis st and one in the train station [in welly]. i've also been out trying out different places, and i quite liked 'plum on cuba's' coffee. and the one i had from the krazy lounge was okay [but that might've been a fluke].

i've heard tea's really bad for you.

I probably should drink coffee though...i slept for 13 hours the other day :-S and I'm always falling asleep at the wierdest times....hm

mt friend john srinks more coffee than i do and he has a mug which i thought was really cool
- Coffee....You can sleep when you're dead!

i love it

...thats 'my friend john drinks'...cant type

i like iced coffee

my coffee - i like 2 spponfuls of greegs distinction, 2 sugars and milk....that describes how addicted to caffiene i am. i need to quit......

technically ive been hooked of coffee for 10 years, but its only been since 1997 ive really noticed my coffee consumption has become somewhat of a problem (too many sleepless nights, progressing on to harder stuff like 'V' ad well as increasing my coffee intake from 3 cups a week in 1993 to at least 7 cups a day in 2003- much worse than my nictone intake ever got to [ as im a recovering nictone addict] )

//2 spponfuls of greegs distinction

you call that an addiction? watch the hard stuff dude.

I'm not a big coffee drinker but I'd go with latte.
If I really need to be perked up then I go for some greek style coffee which I am still perfecting the art of making.

So give me coffee and TV
Peacefully
I've seen so much, I'm going blind
And I'm brain-dead virtually

>Blur, coffee and tv

i dont actually drink coffe. but mmmmmmmm, coffee cake and coffee icecream and coffee tim tams and coffee the dessert with layers of cream and coffee and chocolate and even the smell!

oops, i did not mean to write 'coffee the dessert' i dont actually know what the dessert is called. i meant to write 'coffee IN the dessert.' which actually doesnt make much more sense. but yeah, bassically the dessert i'm on about is layer of crem, then a layer of ground coffee and breadcrumbs and grated chocolate, then more alternateing layers.
mmmmmmmmmmm.

mmm coffee and tv - I love that song!

nyahh, that dessert you're describing sounds a bit like tiramisu, but that usually has layers of sponge cake soaked in coffee alternating with whipped cream and chocolate. It's bloody nice.

I once heard Kim Hill describe Tiramisu as 'rich man's trifle', which I thought was really cute.

Hell, I like em both!

Or if you make tiramisu the European way you would use marscapone, not whipped cream. Not that there seems to be a whole pile of difference. Marscapone is a very soft cheese with relatively little flavour, and has a consistency much like whipped cream. They're both fat personified, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

1. At home, I'll drink plunger or instant... really depends on the amount of visitors. At a cafe, I kinda vary it... Flat White, Long Blacks, Short Blacks, Lattes, Bowl Lattes.

2. Fidels is preferred caffeine intake venue.

1. At work we have a machine that makes something akin to a long black. Otherwise I'll have a flat white. Before I started ODing on the coffee, I was known to have the occasional short black or ristretto, but I really can't afford to since I got into my 3-a-day habit. I'm suffering enough insomnia already.

2. When I was in Welly, in order of preference: Fidel's, Midnight Espresso, Eva Dixon's, Deluxe, Espressaholic, Krazy Lounge. Fuel for work breaks. How many of those places are still around now? It's been a while...
In Orc-land there's only one place to go for really good coffee, and that's Brazil. After work, I'll walk in, sit down, get out my cigarettes and the Listener, and if it's not busy, the lovely cafe guy will have my flat white ready by then. It's really nice to be recognised...

Also, Roasted Addiqtion for proximity (just round the corner from my house) and Verona for a convenient place to meet friends.

...Fidel's, Midnight Espresso, Eva Dixon's. Nice places. And they are all still there. I'd have to add Katipo on the end there. Smoker friendly cafe. Good decor. And Chess.

So too are the Deluxe and Krazy Lounge, visited them both over the weekend along with Midnight Expresso and Fidel's, and some place opposite the New World, on Allen or Balir Street - had nice mushrooms on toast but the coffee was so-so. The one advantage Midnight Expresso has over Fidel's is that the cups are bigger.

// The one advantage Midnight Expresso has over Fidel's is that the cups are bigger.
Yeah... but the smokers yard at Fidels just can't be beat. Especially in Winter when the big gas heater is on, and its all packed out and toasty.
I'll be there a lot more now it is getting cold again :) Looking forward to it.

What I loved most about Fidel's in winter was the Hot Lemon, Ginger & Garlic drinks. Inspired!

For some reason, that reminds me of a skit I did in a uni youthgroup. We had to think of something ultra-geeky for a typical BBS student to have in his thermos flask and I thought up "leftover hot Ribena". That winter they started selling hot blackcurrant juice on campus...
But I digress.

Flat white, one sugar substitute substance for me please. Maybe a latte if it's with breakfast.

Order of preference. Fidel's, Mono, Eva Dixon's, Revive (very dependent on which end of town I'm in at any given moment). Fuel for on the go...

All these Fidel drinkers! We must have crossed paths many times. If you see a tall scruffy, glasses wearing lad popping sucaryl into his flat white (or latte) , and most likely eating a savoury muffin (or samossa, or one of those pastrami rolls, mmm), then call me out.
