Ok all, the Super 12 is upon us. Here's a wee forum for y'all to make your picks, discuss the tactics, and disseminate the games.
The virtual Super 12 is up and running as well, so, if you're playing, post your username here (noizyboy) so we can add each other to our 'mates' lists.

This years super 12 is looking interesting. The Auckland Blues are looking strong with perhaps the best backline and an Allblack forward pack. I think that they will be hard to beat.
Canterbury and Otago are also strong.
I can't see the Hurricanes or the Chiefs progressing too far, and I suspect that the 4th position might go to the Warratahs.
1. Blues.

Does Robbie Deans have one of the most ...
Does Robbie Deans have one of the most canny rugby minds in the world? Leaving out the greatest first-five on the planet to give a Daniel Carter, virtually untried at first class level a run. Ballsy, mate. Still, he can always sub on Mehrts should things go to custard, and, if expected, they don't, and the Crusader forwards roll over the 'Canes forwards left right and centre, then how good will it be for Carter's confidence. I seem to recall Robbie tried a similar experiment with another young buck a couple of years back. His name was Richie McCaw.

Hm. Maybe Merhts used to be number one, but he's been superceded. Spencer is our incumbent Allblack 1st 5. Mehrtens only came in when Spencer was injured.
Carter is an exciting running player, and this is a good game to experiment. Mehrtens has never been great against the Hurricanes loose forwards, and I think Carter is better suited for this game.
//and the Crusader forwards roll over the 'Canes forwards left right and centre, then how good will it be for Carter's confidence. I
Lol. They will roll them, that's a certainty.
//I seem to recall Robbie tried a similar experiment with another young buck a couple of years back. His name was Richie McCaw.
True. Lets hope he can unearth some more talents for the world cup.

yes, I do tend to get carried away still when discussing Mehrts. Sometimes I remind myself of that Twelfth Man cricket parody, when one of the commentators starts getting excited about Shayne Warne...
"He's a legend! He's a Victorian! A hero in anyone's language!"
// Spencer is our incumbent Allblack ...
// Spencer is our incumbent Allblack 1st 5
Which means precisely fuck all and more so with John Mitchell as AB coach.
//Merthens is a pussy.
No he's not. Mark Carter was a pussy. Merts may not be a strong man in the mould of the various members of the Oliver family, but he's not a Mark Carter either.
// Mark Carter was a pussy. Mark ...
// Mark Carter was a pussy.
Mark Carter was a legend, who conquered both codes.

Final Four: Crusaders, ACT, Blues, Cats
The Cats have made some clever off-season buys - watch out! (even tho I hate em!)
My user name is: Carlito (aka Carlos)
PS - Merthens is a pussy. Sure he might be a good kicker, average passer, tactical genius - but is there room in rugby at the highest level for a pussy? I mean really great thinkers of the game of soccer don't make a soccer team if half their game is lacking.
Carlos is the incumbent firsy-five.
And before all the Merthens fans (most in the area usually) hark in with their knee jerk reactions about how he's tougher than bla bla bla - remember that he's in The All Blacks - I mean..................
Oh God I'm bored of rugby, when's the cricket on!?

As George Best said of David Beckham: "He can't kick with his left foot, he doesn't score many goals, he can't head a ball and he can't tackle. Apart from that he's all right."
And all of this talk of him being a ...
And all of this talk of him being a pussy. His close-in game has improved out-of-sight over the last five years. He makes most of his tackles, and is subject to a fair few rampaging #8 runs, so he's bound to slip off a couple. He also pulls his weight when he's needed for a blast-out around a ruck or maul (not that he blasts many out of the way, but it's the thought that counts).
Average passer? The man can drift a ball 30 metres onto a wing running at full speed. He's one of the best passers in the game...a cantabrian, a legend, a hero in anyone's language...

That is true. Mehrtens has certainly bulked up a lot (maybe even 1 or 2 kilograms). Although I don't think that he has been a good defender since 5 years past, rather since Wayne Smith was AB coach, I agree that Mehrtens has toughened up in defending the first five eighth channels. Mehrten's in not a pussy. Mark Carter is not a pussy. Steven Larkham is a pussy.
//The man can drift a ball 30 metres onto a wing running at full speed. He's one of the best passers in the game
Sure, his distance passing is good. But he still lacks those sublime divinations of creativity that characterise the best of Carlos Spencer. Spencer's genious as a passer trumps Merhtens. When Mehrtens tries to mimick the "behind the back flick" or any other of Carlos' inventions, I always have a bit of a chuckle when he misses completely, or when Reuben Thorne knocks the ball on.
My point is that, to win the world cup, we need both Spencer's brilliance, and Mehrtens' reliability. If only MC Carter was still around to give us a genuine "hard man" option at 7.

What I want to know is how that guy at #1 got 55 points? Surely the top score (which a few people seem to have lucked in on, and ignoring bonus points for draws, of which there were none) is 6 games times 8 points available per game = 48 points?
God, now I'm stuck in a 'session expired' loop.
Hell, Dust, you want to throw your hat into the ring and grab the contract for this one next year?

At least I'm supporting a good team. I just feel sorry for any Hurricanes/Chiefs fans who have to suffer the dilemma of picking their team, which equates to giving up points, or the sacriledge of picking the competition... Tune into radio sport in the morning to hear Martin Devlin debating/whining the merits of that quandry.

I'm basically really just a Cully fan from hell. I've seen everyone of his tries live. I have a desperate desire for him to outscore campo if the magic will return.

He already has in my books. Many of Campo's tries were against minnow teams. New Zealand didn't even count tries against those minnows as legitimate.
Look at the comparitive records against the true rugby powers, and you'll see a different picture.

The Sth African games got me too. It's hard to be upset with the Highlanders for scoring more points than I predicted. I'm relatively happy with 23.

Crusaders v. Hurricanes Jade Stadium, ...
Crusaders v. Hurricanes
Jade Stadium, Christchurch
Fri 21 Feb, 2003
Final Score: 37-21
"I've never seen so many grown men walking about a stadium with polystyrene swords!" Murray Mexted pointed out before kick-off. Like you'd see polystyrene swords at lots of grounds around the world, but just not in such great numbers. My dad had arrived in Welly for the weekend to spend some time with the grandsons, and he'd brought up a couple of said swords, which were waved vigorously at the appropriate moments as we took up our positions in beanbags around the live Sky feed from the old home town.
It was a fairly parochial performance from the commentary team, made up as it was of a trio of Wellingtonians (Muzza, Nizbo and JP), who, like Wellingtonians everywhere, were full of hope for their beloved team, even in face of a potential drubbing from the well-rested, sun-tanned, and, it must be said, generally better groomed Crusaders side.
Such hopes would have been sorely teased by a rousing first half performance from the men in the bumble-bee colours. They came out all guns firing, and kept the ball in hand for multiple phases in the first five minutes, even threatening to make a foray into the Canterbury half at one point. Finally bereft of players who wanted to smash their heads into the brick wall of Canterbury defenders, Flutey was forced to kick, resulting, eventually, in a typically ruthless try that saw Marshall chip, Chris Jack recover with those telescopic arms of his, then the ball moved in slippery-soap fashion out through the backline for Caleb Ralph to finish in the corner.
On another night the floodgates might have opened, and a drubbing of Warratahs proportions might have been on the cards, but tonight, with a few players minds still on the beach, the 'Canes were allowed a sniff of a close contest. Nathan Mauger went off with a rolled ankle, and Mehrtens came on, probably not the happiest chappy in the world, having assumed he was going to be allowed another week for his wispy sideburns to get some substance before coming under the glare of the cameras.
This led to the odd situation of having three potential first-five eighths playing in the inside backs, and, while A. Mauger, Carter & Mehrts discussed just who was going to play where, Tana Umaga wandered through the vacant area, fended off the cover tackle from Greg Feek (with a fantastic straight arm to the chest), then set up Maa Nonu for the try. Tana, he's all style, even in a losing outfit.
A couple of random penalties before half-time, and things weren't looking too bad for the 'Canes. Only down 11-8 at the break (although it should have been 14-8, A.Mauger having missed a droppy he normally would have sneezed over: dead in front, 15 metres out, pulled it wide).
It looked even better for the 'Canes after the break, when Flutey levelled things up with a penalty, and there was the distinct sniff of an upset in the air. The red and blacks were having none of it though, and the Crusaders scrum finally woke up, and sent the 'Canes forwards crying for their mummys -- rolling them off their own scrum feed like, and then setting the platform for a simple Aaron Mauger try.
From there, despite valiant attempts from some of the 'Canes (Ormsby, in particular, who made a great run and won a penalty by convincing the ref that Leon McDonald was holding on too long, when, in fact, Ormsby had pinned the ball to McDonald's side), it was all Crusaders, albeit not the vintage variety. The defence was there, and the 'Canes struggled to make any ground at all when they had the ball in hand, and, as a result of the defensive pressure, Carter counter-attacked through the tired Hurricane's pack to set up Vunibaka in the corner, and then, only minutes later, charged down a slo-mo Holwell clearance to score himself.
The Canes snuck one back with a set move that started with a throw so crooked that Mark Hammet was still arguing with the linesman about it when the man he was supposed to be marking (Welly hooker Joe Ward) dotted (or one might say crashed) down unopposed. Play the whistle Mark!
But it was fresh-faced Daniel Carter who had the last word, when Christian Cullen tried a wee chip and chase, only to watch it fall to the new boy, who turned, stepped Cully, then dashed 50 metres straight down the middle for a try under the posts.
So, yes, a Crusaders win, and they'll only get better. Plenty of hope for the 'Canes though, who looked capable of giving the big boys a run for their money, and, even better, went a whole game without anyone getting binned or sent off. Any of you 'Canes fans missing Dion Waller?
