I really love the song "Down in Splendour". It's in my top ten all time songs. But the song died last night.
It wasn't an easy death: "Down in Splendour" didn't quietly pass away in its sleep like OMC's "Land of Plenty". No "Down in Splendour" was murdered - violently bludgeoned to death by the musical stylings of Chris Warner and Donna on Shortland Street.
There were plenty of witnesses - you were probably one of them. Will you speak out for this poor song and it's meaningless death?
For the sake of other great NZ songs I urge you to click the link below and take the appropriate steps.

You keep saying this all over the show. What are you? A robot?
It appears I was a bit cryptic - the "cover" of the song on last nights Shortland Street was so appalling it has destroyed whatever future enjoyment I might have gotten from the song.
Years ago on "Shortland Street" Chris ...
Years ago on "Shortland Street" Chris and Guy Warner were reliving their scarfie days by going to a Verlaines concert. They returned to the clinic badly (drunkenly, perhaps) singing "Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine..." This did not, however, ruin "Death and the Maiden" for me.

That'll lead to Andrew Brough's biggest APRA cheque ever, probably. Still, as you point out, was it worth the price? We've lost 'Loyal', 'Down in Splendour' -- what's next for the big sell-out...?
* The Bats: 'Block of Wood' -- Background music for Mitre 10 Groundforce
* Bailter Space: 'Splat' -- Mortein Flyspray ad
* Concord Dawn: 'Morning Light' -- Hubbards Breakfast cereals
* JPSE: 'Breathe' -- Tic-Tacs
* Dave Dobbyn/Herbs: 'Slice of Heaven' -- Tip Top Bread

Well i don't like to use the term "sell out" but:
*The Datsuns: Supergyration (KFC)
*The Dudes: Don't know the title but it was on the L&P ad
*Goldenhorse: American Wife (Vodaphone? i could be wrong)
*That "Counting the Beat" song for K-mart
*Tadpole: Better Days (ZM ad)
*Slim: Real World (Export Gold)
*HLAH: Wet Rubber (Export Gold)
*Pan Am: Long grass (That photo ad)

we lost dave dobbyn long ago, the straitjacket fits being covered in one episode of shortland street isn't going to destroy the song, admittedly 'loyal' was painful
" ... 'Slice of Heaven' -- Tip Top Bread ... "
considering slice of heaven was written for a movie, you could argue that it was a sold out song from the beginning, it doesn't make it a bad song, it brings many many fantastic memories back to me
course all that said, i laughed out loud at " 'Splat' -- Mortein Flyspray ad " :)

You mean some songs aren't genuine??? All the songs I have ever heard were real, even the ones that were specifically written for ads .... :-)
And I'm not sure that a song can have integrity either .... that is a human attribute in my opinion. The writer can have integrity, or even "artistic integrity", which may or may not be the same thing.
What I find happening is that a song gets picked up for an ad (and more power to the writer if they can sell their song to the ad-man) and then it gets flogged to death in 30 second segments and I get so pissed off that I no longer like the song any more ... is this what you are getting at??

I saw a Supergroove concert and the audience started chanting "Munchos! Munchos!" Various drunken fools yelled out "play the Munchos song!". Supergroove ignored that and instead put on a kickarse show.

I didn't say they weren't infact i like alot of those songs that make it onto commercials. What i meant was that some songs are too precious to be put on anything degrading as an add.
//And I'm not sure that a song can have integrity either
of course if you've got in mind the mindless intention of writing a song just so you can see it on an add.

no. But it does get annoying when something gets overplayed though. I don't think the writers sell their songs specifically but they more in turn get asked permission.

I really don't see anything wrong with one of NZ's most prominent (and given the quality of a lot of the other stuff we're putting out, better) examples of media culture, paying tribute to a now defunct rock band.
sure the straitjacket fits were exceptionally good, but lets not be too precious about them, i'm sure they're not complaining about the royalties, and it exposes people to their music that may not have been otherwise. i don't as a rule watch it, so i can't vouch for the quality of the version, but i always feel happy when i see music i love referenced in surprising places.
i mean come on, can you claim that when you're singing along to music you like that you're truly doing it justice? or are you doing it because it makes you happy?
