I am really enjoying the "dub" videos that are about at the moment.
Salmonella Dub and The Black Seeds both have interesting animated videos
Rhombus' " goodbye pork pie" and The Black Seeds' "Matrix" parodies
Sola Rosa's skeleton in the desert
Trinity Roots' Little Things
BUT
what is with the current styles of rock video?
In general they are so bloody boring and are being repeated ad nauseum.....
It appears that "The Band" being put into a rundown looking location, e.g. a warehouse and filmed "Playing Live" are the only rock videos being made at the moment.
Prime examples of this style would be...
The Have, Pacifier, Ramekin, The Datsuns, and even the D4 (slight change of location i.e. back of a van but still same old same old)
It amazes me that the makers of these vids think that they can reproduce even a fraction of the live feel. I am sure that it will be debated that the rock music stands on it's own and does not need the artifice of pretty pictures to make it interesting, were as dub music is boring so needs addition visual lushness to make up for lack of music.....

The 'live' vid a good solid formula if you don't have a lot of budget to play with. And lots of bands like to 'keep it real' with their vids, avoiding narratives the need for acting classes, wardrobe or makeup and just letting their live performance speak for itself albeit via heavy editing and endless takes of course.
Yeah there are a lot of those 'live' rock vids around but the great ones really sing and I don't think I'll ever get sick of them.

yeap , its sure a hellavlot easier to shoot the crap outta a band then give her the old blender in post.. personally i find those vids boring as hell... the nz film industry has got a whole lot of talent at the mo, and ppl goin hard.. and thanks to ppl like chris graham amd james barr there are some wicked vids about... (little things , clav dub, hey son)
the reason that theres lottsa lame vids is cause there no money to be had in making them, so you only do it for the love... mayb there is more love in dub...

i agree aka, there are not very many interesting rock vids at the moment. What has happened to the Foo's?? From the fun and interesting videos off of nothing left to lose, to the boring band-on-a-stage videos which are their latest offering. lack of imagination? its just so blah.

I hated the Nothing Left to Lose videos, and the Foo's image that went along with them. And the album was crap, dull and awful pop bollocks.
New video is back to basics and they are rocking. It is a far better thing for them to be somewhat serious.

yep...just budgets. You try making a video for 5-10k with a narrative storyline on film in nz. Without pulling in massive favours it's pretty impossible...which is hard cause we've got to compete with overseas ones where they do have the budget.
How about we suggest an idea for a band of our choice when we hear they're about to make a video..keeping budget in mind and email them with ideas??
Music video styles and techniques go in ...
Music video styles and techniques go in an out of fashion. One thing I've noticed a lot of at the moment is when a band is rocking so hard that it seemingly causes the camera to shake. The Pacifier "Run" video has a bit of this. It's going to end up looking cheesy, then some smart band will parody it, and then no one will use it anymore.

I really rate the D4 one in the van. Takes it a little bit outside the square.
The other feature that is bordering on overuse is the use of Super 8 or digitial Super 8 effect. It is cool, but everything seems to have that old home movie feel at the moment.
Live videos is taking the easy way out ...
Live videos is taking the easy way out from a good concept. I agree that most rock videos are going downhill and are nothing more than the standard band in room, close up on the lead singer, and everyone else showing off. What ever happened to getting decent directors with new ideas? I know everyone's gonna be a little disgruntled by me saying this but Rubicon even have decent videos as do Tadpole. It seems these days the ëxpensive rock videos are nothing but money wasted on a over the top background and not the video itself.

i agree, most of the Tadpole and Rubicon videos i have seen still capture the liveness because they are playing their instruments. At least they add something different into it and actually do stuff.

I think that by far the best videos being made by/for kiwi bands (not sure which it is) are the Goodshirt ones, not a dud amongst them.
I like the lofi nature of a clip which is basically just a band playing though, and some bands have done really good jobs of it, I really like the Marystaple one that I think is shot at Valve, and the d4 one in the van is totally sweet.

doesn't the artist have any input into the initial direction that their vid's going to take??
aka is right in saying the animation of (or animated... eg clav dub) video's coming from the dub/reggae bands are freak'n cool gettin cooler. but surely they were presented with the idea at the drawing board before it was taken any further?? i could admit to wanting to a choice if i had one.
i don't really know the cons, but any artist should have some clue unless arranged otherwise...

When I was still at school, one day I compiled a list of all the guys I had quite fancied over my school years (there were about 12 on my list), and I realised only then that they either played drums or trumpet, or both.

Well music videos aren't always the way they seem, i mean it's New Zealand and we haven't really been put out to the world just yet...but it's really up to the rockers what they think would be a good video for them. for the have's video well that was ...
for the have's video well that was damn boring, they were standing on wood chips, no matter how many camera angles you use, how many different "lighting effects" there always going to be there standing on wood chips, its that basic and dull. Whereas 8 foot sativas video for "8 foot sativa" was, in my opionion a really wicked video that wouldn't have costed much, they used animation and them in a white room wich worked really well and the animation was simple and effective.
it doesnt really matter how much money is spent, although that can help, it all comes down to the artists creativity.
As a Music Video Producer I would have ...
As a Music Video Producer I would have to agree with most of the comments so far but to me what appears to be the biggest problem is that it is usually the record company that dictates the look and style of the product they're selling. This in turn severly restricts the artistic risks that a Video Producer can take. The most creative videos tend to be done by enthusiastic film makers with little or no budget to work with. Unfortunately however as most of these videos don't have a NZonAir badge attached to them music shows(who also apply for NZonAir funding) are reluctant to play them in favour of funded product. Thankfully however there are sites like this that are prepared to put up some of the lesser known vids. Another factor is that most record companies are Auckland based and deal with specific production houses in Auckland to create their vids. This ,although financially beneficial, to the production house does seem to cause a lack of creativity. If anyone here needs a music video done drop me a line at paulsparkes@yahoo.co.nz and we can discuss things and see if we can appease some of the discontent here!!

The record companies should stop trying to pull strings and realise that bands are theirs to plan with. Surely the label can give some input though but the band themselves should be happy with what they want with their video.

I think most of music videos from whatever genre are pretty bloody good-right up there with our music in fact! I see plenty of US videos with heaps of $$s thrown at them that bore the socks of me I love the slice of life nesian boys vids, the hyper real trinity roots little things vid, and even the lets come up with another original idea goodshirt vids, ed keeps turning out one great jakob video after another great to see a music video producer looking to film for inspiration rather than churning out another formula rock number

The reason some music videos are just videos of the band playing live is to remind a vast majority of stupid people that it is a band and not a singing group they have to show people who dont know them that they are a band!
