Well, I'm a little blurry-eyed this morning having stayed up all night to watch the Black Caps thump the Windies. Just scanning the papers this morning to see what more learned minds made of the match, and found this (unrelated) report on Shayne Warne's drug-taking...
"The diuretics to which Warne tested positive, hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride, are prescribed to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, diseases of the kidneys and liver, and pre-menstrual tension. "
Maybe they need to introduce sex testing to the Cricket World Cup like they do at the Olympics?

oh and congrats 2 NZs win over the west indies this morning.
I gave up after cairnsy went out. ...
I gave up after cairnsy went out. can't believe we won. was it really a 'thumping' or are you taking the piss? The scorecard looked pretty even.
well, it was a thumping for the first ...
well, it was a thumping for the first 20 or so overs of their innings (80/6 after 21) -- we had them totally on the ropes, a bit of a mid-innings revival that was giving me flashbacks to the 1992 world cup when we lost that semi-final to Pakistan. Sarwan's innings had the definite possibility of turning into a Inzamam-ul-Haq heartbreaker. But it didn't, and when he went, they limped through to the end.
yeah -- the astle/cairnsy double-whammy was a bit hard to stomach at the time, particularly the amount of air that was between astle's bat and the ball when he was given out. i was starting to sense a conspiracy. but it's nice to know we bat all the way down now, and when you see the likes of adams, oram, and (sometimes) mccullum coming in down the order, you know there's always a few more runs left in the day. vettori looked good opening too. quite steady, kept it ticking over, out to a good ball. leave him there, I say.
I gave up about over 22 in the second ...
I gave up about over 22 in the second innings. I'm pleased we won, but a little disappointed they got within 20 runs. It didn't look like the game was going to go the distance when I went to bed. Think there is good argument for retaining mccullum in team.

You reckon they can take South Africa???
if they play as well as they can, ...
if they play as well as they can, particularly if astle has a good knock. he's been looking likely -- played well and was given out to a shocker against the Windies, so if he and fleming can get a platform going, and have styris and cairns rip things up in the middle a bit, and then get oram/harry/mccullum/vincent to go nuts in the last 15, it's all on. Our bowlers are better than theirs, too.
If Bond rips it up, and the time is ...
If Bond rips it up, and the time is coming, New Zealand should take Sth Africa and take that freekin monkey off their back. Your right about the batting, get a decent opening stanza and its all on for the middle order... Bond bowls better when the other teams have a world class seamer.
yeah you guys are right, we have an ...
yeah you guys are right, we have an excellent bowling line up.
the only thing nz has to work on is not losing quick wickets in the top order, i mean nice win againt the windies, but it shouldn't have really been left to mccullum and adams to knock us to 241. But then again, if that stoopid umpire didn't give astle we may have got further...
but remember south africa good batsman who can perform well and hit big right to lance klusener. So we have to play well with bat & ball to beat them i reckon
I just hope that our bowlers learnt ...
I just hope that our bowlers learnt from Dion Nash's mistake the last time South Africa were out here. If its the last over, they need a couple of runs to win and Klusener is on strike. Dont bowl a wide full toss that he can hit for six.

yeah, and to make it even worse, he ...
yeah, and to make it even worse, he took off the bowler who was bowling really well at the time (forget who now) and replaced him with himself, and then lost the game for us.

i found it weird on my late night channel surfing escapades to keep stumbling over the cricket. it was on 3, 10 and 12 on sky. what i found most interesting was the ads 3 played, in comparison to those on sky. sky had heaps of agricultural products, they thashed that porno lazy summer CD ad, and a bunch of different investment 'opportunities', whereas 3 was all fastfood, cellphones, mitre 10 and rebel sports. I suppose that indicates something, what, I don't know...

as my wife pointed out, there's no real connection between the images in the ad and the CD itself -- it's as if some ad guy got a girl to come in, pull a few poses in a bikini, and then they figured out what product to attach it to later.

Yes. I saw the ad with a group of friends. At first we were amazed, then we laughed at how blatant it is and that was the end of it. It's not great advertising if they don't even link it to the music. It has just become the source of a running joke, and we are no closer to knowing what songs are even on it

I stayed up till 5am as well (forgeting about school next day) and thought it was a good effort.
I thought NZ looked far better than the west indies, especially in the field.
Oh and what a way to get rid of Lara....amazing fielding.
Also i didnt realise that Shane Bond was so damn fast. Last time i watched a match he was bowling at 40-45km at the fastest, but now he looks like hes up with Bret Lee.
Nah bro. Generally NZ speed radars are ...
Nah bro. Generally NZ speed radars are 6kmh slower than Aussie ones. This is why in the India series Bond was bowling at "140" kmh whereas Brett Lee was getting up to "156" in the VB series. Add the factors of NZ/Aus pitch/air speed and humidity differences and Bond is right up there.
Officially Bond is the world's 3rd fastest bowler. However, that makes him the world's fastest, behind two chuckers :)

Also along those lines of thought, how typical is it for New Zeland's 'chucker' to be a guy who manages a blistering 120kmh or so? heh heh
To tell the truth, I haven't seen Mills' action. I couldn't possibly comment..... but I just did.
Mills is a bit of a chucker. He's got ...
Mills is a bit of a chucker. He's got that thing, much like Ahktar and Lee do I suspect, of having a bendy elbow: so when he delivers the ball, it actually bends backwards a bit as he whips it through the air, which does, admittedly, create a little bit of extra pace. Muttiah Muralitharan, on the other hand, has no excuses.
And there's some good news for the Black Caps: Jonty Rhodes out of the cup with a broken hand.

Noizy mate, didn't ya know, he has a birth defect. I mean, of course he should be allowed to break the rules if it's not his fault. Just like Shane Warne.....
That reminds me: "Shane Warne is feeling really low at the moment. Even his Mum is taking the piss outta him!" Classic.
Yeah, I actually stumbled across a ...
Yeah, I actually stumbled across a couple of pages about his 'genetic good fortune' after I posted. So he was born a cheater. ;)
Damn, I couldn't wait to make the joke ...
Damn, I couldn't wait to make the joke that Bond was the fastest _bowler_ in the world and I didn't even get the chance. Mills action is only illegal when he's doing an effort ball, and that still only just gets to about 130-135. I've got no time for him myself, can't believe they dropped Paul Hitchcock for him.
The big debate I guess is who's speedball radars are right and who's are wrong? Because pretty much everywhere else in the world Bond bowls in the late 140s, except here. Apparantely the radars we use are Police speeding ones and are callibrated every six months. But im suspicious about the Aussie ones, because there's no way in hell Craig White bowls as fast as our Bond.
Two rather late points of possible ...
Two rather late points of possible interest:
1) Maybe NZ motorists are getting away with speeding? Anywhere else in the world, they would be considered to be doing 115 but here in NZ they are only doing 105 (remembering the 10k leniency).
2) I was listening to Ian Smith talk the other day about Muralitharan. His quote went something like this. "Murali claims to have a birth defect that means he is exempt from the laws of cricket. I would have liked nothing more than to be a basketballer. However, I am 5 foot six - in basketball, this is the equivalent of a birth defect and the harsh reality is that I could never succeed professionally. In my case, the birth defect was a negative because it prevented me from fulfilling my dream. Murali, on the other hand, has a birth defect that gives him a very large advantage over other cricketers - a 'positive' defect, if you will. Because he has a birth defect does not mean he can flout the laws of cricket - it means that unfortunately he cannot play the game due to a breakage of the rules. I hope he is welcomed to the real world at some stage." Ah, Smithy. He is and will be NZ's Richie Benaud.
3) Anybody see Waqar vs. Symonds? What a psycho!
Ian's argument is a reasonable one, ...
Ian's argument is a reasonable one, but im not sure how fair it is to not allow people to play just because they have a defect, and hence could perhaps be described as suffering some kind of disability.
Also, Ian Smith is a whole crapload better than that wrinkled old toad Benaud. Smith (unlike Benaud, Bill Lawrie and Tony Grieg) has an ability to see beyond his countries team and calls a game down the middle, and feels no need to stroke the ego and kiss the ass of his nations (and in Grieg's case, his favourite nation perhaps, god knows why he is the way he is) players.

its a bit difficult getting World Cup news here in Scotland, but from what I gather, the kiwis looked in great form against the windies.
However, why was Vettori opening the batting?
// why was Vettori opening the batting? ...
// why was Vettori opening the batting?
'Cos he's good enough to. He's really developed as a batter over the last couple of years, and is now a pretty useful top of the order option. His defence is top-notch, so he's able to hold up one and get the singles (and occasional boundary), while his (presumably more illustrious) partner at the opposite end takes it to the bowlers in a more aggressive manner.
He's been opening the batting for Northern this season, with some good success. 89 in his last knock against Wellington. just before heading off with the Black Caps to the World Cup. So, with McMillan out of sorts, and the experiment of Lou Vincent as a pitch-hit opener opener going by the by (he's so much better coming in further down the order when the field has opened up and he can use his speed to steal a few quick singles), Vettori is the next best bet. And it's working well.

Yes that's true, but domestic cricket is a far cry from international cricket. I thought it was a poor move putting vettori in the opening position. I would of thought that if the Black caps wanted quick runs, Adams would of been a better candidate

Well Fleming and Vettori were going 6 ...
Well Fleming and Vettori were going 6 an over until Fleming got out. Not too bad.
And I don't think the kiwi tacticians buy into that 'hit over the top in the first 15' philosophy that was so popular a couple of years back (when the Sri Lankans were caning everyone with said theory). Our bigg hitting strength really is further down the order from 4-10, so better to have them coming in on a reasonable platform, instead of throwing them at the new ball sharks in the first few overs. Chris Harris and Lou Vincent have both been up there, and failed pretty miserably.
// so better to have them coming in on ...
// so better to have them coming in on a reasonable platform,
yeah that's true, however I personally don't see vettori as a man that can do that. You made a comment about vettori being an excellent defensive player, I would have to disagree. At international level he is totally unproven.
Danny boy had actually done very well ...
Danny boy had actually done very well in test cricket at times, and made some good fast attacking finishes in ODI's. I think he was htere to protect astle more htan anything and that he did. Its a shame that that ball had to hold up a little on flem, and the shocker caught behind on astle, not even near it.

Yeah, Fleming said on the news they used Vettori to open to protect Astle's wicket, because apparently he has a lot of trouble with the new ball...
Vettori is good opening as his only ...
Vettori is good opening as his only really good shot he plays is really effective in the first 15 with the field up. But when he comes in further down the order they can shut him down really quickly. I dont buy into this protecting Astle's wicket though. How long has he been opening for? I would have had Vettori take Flemmings place with Flem dropping to 3, which I think gives us a much more stable top order.

although, if Astle really is struggling with the new ball, and throwing Vettori in -- even if he only lasts a couple of hours (enough to take the brand new hardness of the ball) -- means Astle is coming in feeling a bit more comfortable, well, that's nearly a sacrifice I'd be willing to make.
