Hello everyone.
I have started a new art class where i can basically do anything i want, in the style of any artists i like. The teacher asked me what i am interested and i said comics, stuff like Jamie Hewlett. I also like crumb, etc. And I like the artist Mark Ryden...BUT i was wondering if anyone could dirrect me to comic artists/artists that they like that are in this veign. . . I want to make charactures for my pieces of celebrities/political figures/etc that show deeper meaning, kind of like rolling stone portraits?! Have anyone seen jamie hewlett's pulp comic? fantastic.
Anyhow PLEASE recommend some things because i really do need some more inspiration. thanks. (even books you think i should buy)

i suppose if you know old school people like Crumb you might know about the late 80s early 90s series like Sandman (which was more about Neil Gaiman as a writer teaming up with a few artists - fantastic ethereal art) or Alan Moore stuff - Watchmen (if you can pick this up, you'd be lucky - again, coming about from a writer with a vision + Dave Gibbons artist), also Hellblazer (which come off a Alan Moore story) ... Daniel Clowes is a fantastic artist/writer - he did Ghost World, which as a movie wasn't well received, but as a comic is devastatingly good, as is his 8-Ball stuff - in fact, he's so great at seeing the world that I'd vote him president of everything.
there's heaps of NZ artists who are just incredible and very very world class, very original - Ant Sang's series Dharma Punks came out ... 2000 and might still be going, Karl Wills - Jessica of the Schoolyard, Mr Gasalaska and Anus Cat and Scrotum Mouse (they're a bit dodge, but very very perceptive in the SouthPark/Simpsons style of sarcasm) ...
Charles Burns is quite good - American, cool gothicy type stuff ...
what a very cool topic ... me envious!
oh i really like the Cartoon Histories of the World - Larry Gonick - a great way to study for history, very balanced view of history (volume II spends a lot of time on Asian history - something we don't hear much about in the "west", but really really should)

i completely forgot Scott McCloud - he wrote a fantastic comic called "Understanding Comics" - would be good if you were to dip into the theory a little bit. also very entertaining - you'll never look at the world the same way again after reading it.
PS - NiceGuyEddie - Steve Dillon is a fave of mine too, very visceral guy.
Another really good place to look is in the "Big Book of ..." series. they have a heap of different artists involved in them, all at the top of their game, and they make fantastic reading as well. it's interesting to see what one artist does with one topic as opposed to another. My personal favourite is the Big Book of Conspiricies, but there are at least 6 others - Hoaxes, Bullies ...
I also really really love the guys who do "Love and Rockets". Hernandez Brothers? what a terrific series ...

I couldn't think of the guy's name... interesting comic, that one...

Another good place to check out loads of kiwi comic artists is in the Officer Pup anthology that Toby Morris edits, I think its supposed to be bi-annual but im not 100% sure. There are still copies of Officer Pup 2 around, and it heap big magazine with heap big amounts of artists.

OK... Artist - Comic
Steve Dillon - Preacher
Phil Winslade - Nevada
Jill Thompson - Finals
Mike Mignola - Hellboy
David Mack - Kabuki
I like David Mack's Kabuki the best. Art and poetry and violence all in perfect harmony. Read Kabuki.
And of course Jhonen Vasquez and his Brilliant Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and Squee (not so much for his art - but for pure comedy value :)

Jhonen Vasquez rules. Funniest comics there are as far as I'm concerned... may not think much of the art, but theres some good drawing styles in there to pick up on, although generally pretty basic.
