Me: Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. It's an allegorical novel concerning India and the magical children who were born within an hour of its birth as a modern nation. Even though it is somewhat derivative of Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum (Rushdie admitted himself that he used Grass's book as a model for his own - magic realism, history of a nation running parallel with peoples' lives, baroque prose stylings etc.), but it's a terrific read in its own right. It won the Booker Prize too.

I read The Virgin Suicides in December. Loved it - haunting, sardonic, lyrical and tender. It's a novel that haunts you long after you've put it down - helped in part by Eugenides' hypnotic prose. I can't wait to read his latest offering - Middlesex.

I enjoyed "Dead Famous" - a good, hearty murder mystery and a commentary on reality TV.
I've recently read Ben Elton's newest book, "High Society". It's about drugs and follows a number of people who are involved with drugs in various different ways, including an MP who proposes that all drugs be legalised, a massive pop star (not unlike Robbie Williams), and a smack-addicted prostitute. (This is starting to sound like a book jacket blurb). It was funny and smart. Good on you, Mr Elton.

hmm I just finished Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks (boyhood bibliography of that famous neurologist - the real guy in that "Awakenings" movie w/ robin williams).. still the best book I read ever was House Of Leaves.. I read it a couple of years ago now but it's still -the- most amazing book I ever read.. if you can take a look at it or even get it out of somewhere definately do. The book defies description.

I got "House of Leaves" out of the library, read the first section, forgot about it and returned it two months later. I suspect there'll be a big old fine waiting for me the next time I go there.
But just so people get an idea of the greatness of "House of Leaves", the book doesn't just tell a story in straight prose. It uses other writing techniques, scripts, transcripts. The text isn't just displayed in standard columns, it's in boxes, shapes. Even the fonts used were picked for a reason. It's really unlike anything that you'll find in your local Whitcoulls.

Have just been to a photographic exhibition curated by John Pilger at the Melbourne museum.
The pictures were horrific: sweat shop workers living and working conditions, napalmed Vietnamese children, Korean women getting raped by American soldiers etc etc.
Each photo had a little caption that explained the visual. One of the photos had two American parents holding their dead sons picture and the medal that he was awarded for bravery in the Vietnam war - ‘shot in combat’ – ‘died valiantly for his country’ the medal said. The caption under the photo said that the parents had later found out that he had died while sitting on the toilet because one of his platoon had accidentally fired a gun at the out house not knowing any one was inside!!!! It then went on to say that 41% of Americans killed in the Vietnam war were shot by ‘Friendly fire’ i.e. they had been killed by their own men!!!!!!!!
Anyway the exhibition had plenty of great photos and facts especially in reference to the ill treatment of the Aborigines, a section which seemed to have the least interest from the Australians at the exhibition…………..

I think I've seen that exhibition, with the woman get raped etc. Its really sad! Did you see the photo of the torture bed? Or it might of been a hospital bed, I can't remember, but it was so gross. All old and ratty and blood and hair and flesh everywhere. In this dirty old room

I've kind of lost touch with Mr Donaldson's work - is this something recent? I got caught up in the Covenant series when it came out, even went and had him sign them for me stealing one of his books from the shop in the process but there were millions of people waiting in the queue to buy stuff and I didn't think he'd hang around for ever so just grabbed the one book I didn't have off the shelf.

this is the first time i've ever read any of his work. reave the just is another collection of short stories, i believe its quite recent.
i love short stories. i'm the type of person who can't put a good book down, neglecting sleep and food (among other things) until i get to the end. with short stories i usually read an entire story before going to bed. problem solved.
