Simple people seek simple lives.

OK, onlyoneway - here's your chance. I was a pentecostal Christian for 20 years. I've witnessed miracles. I am not a Christian now. I still pray, I can still speak in tongues.

I left the church because after 17 years of worship and instruction, I started asking questions that noone was able or willing to answer. They'd come up with the same pat answers "you just have to have faith" "do not be deceived by pretty words". There is a place for these answers, but Christians overuse them. I still went to church. Sermons fairly much took the structure of pretty little parables, like your swingset one. Cute. I asked my questions, and noone answered them, so I went elsewhere looking for answers. I've found some answers, I've found more questions, I've found peace, and I feel good about the path my life is on. Recently, I seriously considered returning to the church, but after speaking to a few people at a couple of outreaches in Aotea Square, I realised again it's not the place for me. I'm still searching, still finding.

If the church really wants to reach out to the greater population, and also to hold onto their current younger members, they're going to have to start doing some serious introspection - to address the way they unintentionally encourage a lot young people to feel perpetually guilty, the way they try to ignore difficult questions or brand the querents as troublemakers, the way they get scared when people say "well, how about this" and retreat into their "do not be deceived" scripture shells.

There are some things that the church does really well, they can be really supportive, but at the very least the kiwi church has to move away from the current Evangelical hellfire & brimstone way of doing things. It's shallow, cheap and trashy and people can see right through it. Sorry.

OK. Enough already. Let's talk about the music rather than getting into the tedium and dogma that is religious debate. I'm glad Parachute '03 was a success - everyone seems pretty smiley in the photos and looking at them certainly made me crack a grin, as I mentioned above. It's just a pity that Zed weren't playing, I would have been there in a flash.
