Hey there,
I did this gig once at Zeal in Wellington ages ago (back in the street rioting, 300 kids inside, 1000 kids outside days) and one of my fondest memories of the night was before we even played... they put 'Angel' by Massive Attack on this incredibly good sound system they had there. Tingles, the good kind, the whole room warmed right up. I was so ready to play that gig, and I could tell everyone in the room was charged up too!!
What do you think the best music to start a gig is?
-Peace

This reminds me of when I saw De La Soul at the Auckland Town Hall in 1991. During the pre-show music "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" by PM Dawn came on. At the time it was either the #1 song, or at least in the top 5. About halfway through it was faded down to silence, but there was a big moan of disappointment from the audience, so the volume came back up and they let the song finish.

There's this place that sells designer shirts just up the road from where I work- they don't play music there, they play 'nature sounds'- you know, birds tweeting, wind in the trees, water flowing down a stream, whale sounds, etc... super stinky blue vein CHEEZE, but I've just wondered how different that would be to hear before a gig starts
Peace, tranquility... then all of a sudden, Marshalls on 10 :)

Yeah, sort of mood nature sounds....like your in an emarald forest, or even outside of the norm.
Sometimes the best music to play is that which is different from what the band plays.
On a personal level, The The's, 'Dogs of Lust' is a great song to walk on stage too.
