I have no idea.
Im not really in a position to judge because I havn't heard the albumn, just the single, but I think its plain and relatively crap. Cant say anything special about any part of what I've heard, seems that it got played on the radio so much people started liking it. Am getting annoyed by the ads on tv and the fact that its number 1, when I've heard so much better music from underground bands.
I guess things only get to No 1 if they are bland and crap. How's Shania Twain charging the highest price of ANY female performer in the world for a gig. I wouldnt go if I was paid to. Yuk. Chicken neck.
saw her on that american music show hosted by the osbournes, damn she cant sing.
i only saw some of the show, but doesnt american know what ROCK is?!the part that i saw "eminem" and "nelly" were in basicly every category imagoinable
Its not just the States thats got themselves a wee bit confusified. I jumped out of my pyjamas when I saw the last issue of NME - with Eminem on the cover and a big page on Avril Lavigne. I would have thought these incredibly mainstream acts would have gotten more than enough coverage without getting championed by the alternative music press. Alternative, no longer, it seems. First it was Pink in there and now this. Soon I will have no choice left but to burn my ears off and just listen to the music in my head....
Yeah, I saw that prog. I'm very surprised they put Kelly on air after her performance. Hell, I'm surprised they let her go 'live' in the first place. It backfired on them as well, cos she had the worst performance I've ever seen on TV, and that's saying something.
The Pop/Rock category was a joke, it didn't have one rock act and had Eminem and Pink.
jack johnson is from america. he plays kinda bluesy type guitar and i really like it. the whole album is pretty good. he has also made a couple of surfing movies in the states with the likes of kelly slater.
the album in my opinion is bloody good. he sounds very ben harper/john butler trio. very awesome stuff
He's a surfer gone singer type person. You know... like how J-Lo was a movie star and now a hip hop artist? Well same thing, but he was and still is a surfer.
Funny thing is, his album Brushfire Fairytales has been out since 2000-2001 and it only just got here.
He sings that Flake song with Ben Harper. Except Ben Harper doesn't sing... he sits there with that guitar thing and goes crazy with it near tha end of tha song.

"It seems to me that maybe,
It pretty much always means no,
So don't tell me,
You might just let it go
And often times we're lazy,
It seems to stand in my way
Cause no one,
No not no-one likes to be let down"
- Flake [chorus] - Jack Johnson
The album's gone #1 here...with solid sales b/c NZers have more discerning tastes (a lot of the time) in music. He his a very organic singer/songwriter.
The single is doing well b/c it is cross-format i.e. covers many genres - rock cool, pop, a/c, easy, alt etc....
Hell - it's honest, poignant and simple....and he's still getting criticised???!!?
Save that shit for Britney....Jack's just a surfer who got very badly fucked up one day and began learning the guitar as he recovered.
Oh and Ben Harper is playing the slide guitar. He tours with and likes Jack J b/c it is honesty and lyrical accuracy and poetry that is the common thread between the two of them. They are like souls (even if Ben has a better grasp on the darker realm).
agh I remember seeing Ben Harper in Chch, must be four or five years ago in the good old days. It was the night after seeing Tool, so it was a step down in the old volume department and I think my eardrums were a little shattered but it still rocked. He had an amazing percussionist. He was awesome. no-one else in the world has heard of him though, even guitar mates Ive met that even sound like him - it must be a really NZ thing, that whole style.

Nice one, very modest, but of course true.
