Newbie Alert!! NZ Music Scene? Coming over soon...

Hi,

My first post.. so be kind!

Will be coming to your beautiful land in May for a year. Just wanted to know what the music scene is like? Seems pretty cool anyway.

I missed the big day out.. which is a bummer.... been reading the posts sounded like a great time.

I will be travelling all over the place, wanted to know a few thing's.

1: Apart form this site, what is the best magazine or free add paper i can look at to see when local bands are playing.

2: What are the main venue's in say Christchurch, Queenstown, Auckland, where big bands from over seas come and play.

3: What good venues'pubs, clubs, gig-nights, are there so i catch catch local bands.

4: any other websites with info on NZ bands?

Many thanks!

PS: I'm into all thing's rock......

Forums: NZ Music,

not trying to be a prick but... I would be inclined to ask - why would you want to know where the 'big bands from overseas' are playing.
arent you coming to NZ to take part in our culture?

Hi,

well as an avid gig goer i was merley saying that if possible if any of the bands i was into were playing in NZ then i would like to catch them, it would be great to see them in a far away land at a different venue.

thats why i was asking about local venues for smaller up and coming bands, thus the culture part....

just i love my music!

I'm going to be lazy and just answer #1.

For Auckland the best gig guide is The Fix. It's a little free weekly publication and can be picked up from various bars and cafes around Auckland. There's also a web site:
http://www.thefix.co.nz/

There's also The Package, which more extensive than The Fix. It covers Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. It has a web site:
http://www.thepackage.co.nz/

These two gig guides will give you the best idea of the venues you'll frequent, as well - The only exception is that I don't think I've ever seen the Dog's Bollix (Auckland) advertised, and it's a great place for seeing new bands. And it's the only place I know that you can get pork scratchings.

Also, the www.95bfm.com (student radio station in Auckland) have a really entertainment guide, and streaming radio.

//have a really entertainment guide
did anyone spot my deliberate mistake?

ok heather :P

ah hahahahhahah@Heather

cheers! much appreciated!

I'll answer number 4:

Heres a few sites, some i'm sure you won't be interested depending on your musical tastes-but theres quite a lot of general ones in there:

www.muzic.net.nz
www.noizyland.com
www.bands.co.nz
www.nzmusician.co.nz
www.nzrave.com
www.nzhiphop.com
www.punkas.com
www.biggie.co.nz
www.jazz.co.nz
www.ripituponline.com
www.amplifier.co.nz

And of course, the best of all, this one: www.nzmusic.com :)

Someone from another site asked me the same question. This is what I told her:
"Here's some things to do to get yourself oriented into the local music scene - nzmusic.com is where lots of people hang out chatting about music - according to the chat, you'd see the hottest band in NZ is Blindspott, but you have to factor in the fact that most are schoolkids. Two other websites are amplifier.co.nz, where quite a few mp3 singles are released, and vision100.com, which is a New
Zealand music online radio station.

In New Zealand, the two main music mags are Rip It Up and Real Groove - the former has an interview with the Blindspott boys, as it happens. They both have national gig guides, CD reviews, stories about bands. You'll also be able to listen to bfm in Auckland on 95 FM - the student station, although its pretty urban these days, not particularly New Zealand oriented. All the main cities have student
radio, plus Palmerston North (where I am) and New Plymouth.

I haven't been to Auckland for a while, so don't know the bar scene well, although one bar (The Kings Arms) is going strong with indie music (they have Sleater-Kinney playing there in December - wohoo!) -
Wellington has a good scene, with three main indie venues, all within a stones throw of each other - the Valve, Indigo and Bar Bodega. If you were there on 25 October, you could catch up with Metermen. In
Dunedin, there's Arc Cafe and sometimes the Crown. Christchurch, the Dux Deluxe plus others, but I don't know that town well at all."

yay for the sleater kinney part :P!

whats wrong with being a "schoolkid" ?

Didn't say there was anything wrong with it at all, just that that demogrpahic is a likely explanation for the popularity of Blindspott.

dont bother coming
its shit
no one cares its a big lie
theres nothing here you havent seen before
go away we're sleeping

hehe oh c'mon.. you were all thinking it! Y'all just too damn positive... bad luck, game over

Cheers All,

Very helpful i must say!

By the way you all must have your favourite local bands you go and watch, maybe in them or have friends in them... so drop me a few names.

Also any local radio stations that are on the net, that play indie/rock type stuff and inbetween??!!

our local one is www.phantomfm.com... check it out!

Bollox, just noticed the link to the radiostaion above... got excited with all the responses

Heather has given you 95 bfm, there is also www.radioactive.fm which is the Wellington equivalent and (my personal fave of the student stations online) www.rdu.org.nz.

enjoy your stay valleyboy.

in napier the venue is dirty old ofla's there's a backpackers within crawling distance look out for looma, jakob, ld3, blackbirds all well worth making a detour for and the local scene is really friendly so say hey
