If any of you read this message before you're at the big day out, make sure you go and see them play at 10.30am on the Green Stage.
Otherwise, this would be a good place for you to all discuss what you think of them/thought about them at the BDO.
For those of you who don't have a clue who the band are, they're a 'loud melodic rock' band from the shore who have been playing round Auckland as well as a few gigs here and there around the country over the past year.
A few of you would have seen them when they supported Pacifier in December last year?
Anyway.. they're an awesome band! Check them out! If you can't see them at the Big Day Out and live in Auckland, check them out on Saturday 22 February at Marlborough Park, playing at the North Shore Summer Music Series.

i saw the at the little day in and thought they were alright, but heard a track of theirs on the radio the other day and was sourly dissappointed. from all the hype these guys have been getting from DJs, tv presenters, and general word of mouth i expected a lot more. Im hoping it was just a poorly chosen song because it made them sound like a less poppy version of good charlotte.
i really hope this isnt the case, and im gonna make an effort to see some more of their live shows.

i heard these guys were Skate rock/power pop??
Did you read that in the Big Day Out ...
Did you read that in the Big Day Out Review on www.bands.co.nz ?
That guy was so negative. Does he even enjoy music?
I'd probably have to disagree about his comments about Bolbox Rex. However, I didn't see them at the Big Day Out. Actually... I'd probably disagree with everything he said in that review.
That review wasn't entirely negative. ...
That review wasn't entirely negative. He did describe Bolbox Rex as "tight, flowing and full of energy," which - and correct me if I'm wrong here - sounds pretty positive.
By the way, when Bolbox Rex came up with their name, did they figure out that non-fans would called them Bollocks Wrecks?

Yeah true.
I think they were playing at the dogs bollix and my mother called them Dogs Bollix Wreck.

Said reviewer (Chris Andrews) said this about Bolbox Rex "...I can’t say that they had any real ‘songs’, things just seemed to keep going with the same typical fast, metallic pounding sound, song after song"
I think the complete opposite. I find Bolbox Rex's songs incredibly catchy, by the time I'd seen them live for the second time I was already singing along to the chorus'. Is there anything wrong with fast, metallic pounding anyway?
There are plenty of other comments Chris Andrews made in his review that I don't agree with, and very few comments that I do agree with. Did this guy even want to be at BDO?
He also said "things just seemed to ...
He also said "things just seemed to keep going with the same typical fast, metallic pounding sound, song after song" about them. And he also said The Have weren't much better than them.
I agree that his negative was superficially negative though and the most 'positive' was rather non-sensical: "whilst a number of us older types retreated to the back of the crowds. A thoroughly pleasing way to spend a hot and sunny Friday in Auckland."

I saw them for the first time at the BDO and i was glad i did because I wouldn't say they were going to revolutionize music but they seemed cool and looked like they were having fun. My brother goes to Uni with Mike and is a mate of his and he's been saying go see them they're damn good. So I did. And found out that Mike is Slash's Son.

Bolbox Rex are the best!!! They are so good and i predict that they will become one of Nz's big rock bands. I say go hard guys!!!!
hey guys - im the said reviewer (chris ...
hey guys - im the said reviewer (chris andrews). I just didn't see anything worthwhile in bolbox, the just seemed bland to me. You've gotta see things from my perspective - there wasn't a single band within the first 4 or so hours of the BDO (I was there from start to finish, cramming in as much a possible) that was particularly high on my agenda so i ended up sampling as much as i could - most of which you could probably guess didn't really agree with me. Coming from Christchurch i don't have the local connection to most of these bands (and you must admit - the DBO was pretty singularly auckland-centric. My comment about being old was a bit of a joke - im 24 - where as the BDO seems to be aimed at the 15-19 market...

Hey Guys,
My names Ben, I play drums for Bolbox.
Cheers for all the support, it's interesting to read some of your thoughts about us.
Firstly - I wouldn't say we're "Skater rock/Power pop", if you hear all of our songs you'd find we cover a pretty wide range of styles without settling on one paticular genre. If we had to place ourselves in a genre, we've made our own "ROCK +"! (that's it, just "rock plus")
Secondly - We never expected to please everyone, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm sorry, Chris, that you don't live in Akld and aren't able to hear some of our less 'pop' songs. We spent time deciding on a set list (unusual for us), something we felt would be what BDO punters were looking for, songs that would be considered our more 'radio friendly' songs. We have softer songs and we have heavier songs. Guess you'll have to wait for an album ; ) Although, "didn't see anything worthwhile", "seemed bland", that's a bit harsh don't you think.
I just wanna say 'BIG THANKS' to Jane Yee, Phoebe Spiers, Channel Z, M2, Squeeze, Export Gold and anyone I've missed for all the help so far!!!
See y'all at the shows!

It's "What you gonna do", but that's close enough eh ; ) We now have a video for that song. If any of you saw Squeeze yesterday, you saw it. Thanks to the Squeeze crew for their help with that video : )
I'm looking forward to the Nth Shre Summer Music Series, it's just down the road from me too, it'll be easy to get my gear there, haha.
From what I've heard, we're playing out of the back of a truck, which is cool but I just hope it's not gonna be windy. Playing outside when it's windy blows (haha, pun intended), your cymbals wobble around like mad making them hard to hit, and the sound doesn't travel as well.
Although the North Shore has a ...
Although the North Shore has a reputation for placing a truck in the middle of a park and have bands play on it, but unfortunitly the Summer Music Series will have a 'real' stage, about knee height from the ground. Personally, I like the idea of bands playing on the back of a truck and often it is cheaper... in fact, after 2 years of using a real stage at Day At The Beach (in Browns Bay on Waitangi Day), they've gone back to using the back of a truck. I think it gives the event... um.... style? :P
Not only do drummers complain on windy days while playing outside, but so do the residents. On a windy day, sound travels a lot further and you have people ringing action online at the council, and they send along noise control even though the event us supported by the council, the meetings with organisers were in council buildings, and I believe they even put money in to these events.
It's fucking weird how a council can spend months preparing an event with you, and then on the day of the event close it down cause some wacky old person said that they could hear it while at their letterbox, if their were no cars driving past.
