Hey. So if you've checked out the news today you will see that NZ On Air, Satellite Pictures (makers of Space + Squeeze) and TVNZ are launching a free to air NZ music channel in September.
The channel within a channel will be called M2 and will air on TV2 from midnight to dawn on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights. It will have a 33% NZ music quota .
According to the official press release M2 will be 'presented by six, fresh, talented young hosts, M2’s schedule will be divided into distinct music genres consistent with the tastes of TV2’s core audience. Kicking off with upbeat tunes, the evening will be programmed to follow the distinct moods of your average young music fan’s night, starting full-on and finishing with chill-out beats for an early morning come-down.'
So what do you lot think about that? ... any thoughts?

well hmmmmm... the concepts really good - any move for a new music program is good, considering juice tv is getting progresivley worse in the music it is playing, and squeeze and space are also good but they simply don't have the airtime (ie lengthwise) to make a true impact. so while i am all for the idea, i have to doubt the screening hours. i just don't think that TVNZ will get the numbers at these hours. i find prime's 'cue' a really good show, but i find that more often than not i am too buggered to stay up till 11.30 sitting in front of the TV. now i accept that this will be different on weekends, when i am come in at 3am, sit in front of the telly and absorb what they have to offer, but i doubt that it will become a reqular occurence. My other niggle is that I would like to see an even higher content of kiwi music - i suppose one third is pretty good, but whats stopping them going to a half?? If there simply isn't the volume of kiwi videos out there, i would hope (and i hope this anyway) that the slots will be filled up with international music on the same wavelength as us - stuff that we're never going to see on juice. well that my thoughts. i don't know if it makes any sense whatsoever but i hope so and i really hope that this will progress to something really succesful.

Sounds good!
I just hope that the 'fresh' presenters don't end up being like the Space presenters. Cue on Prime is good and plays videos from the past rather than the trashy new videos they play on most other music programmes.

It's a start but I just don't like fact it's on late at night... is it really of benefit to local music if it is too late for most people watch?
If no one is watching, funding will get withdrawn eventually and we are back to where we started. Even spending that money on a 30 minute show in a prime time slot will give more exposure than the midnight to dawn schedule.
33% local content quota is cool though and I do like the idea of the music channel because it will grow within a few years to a full channel no doubt.

sounds sweet as but what everyone else said about the timeslot thing-most of us are either out somewhere or asleep around then!! 33% kiwi stuff will be cher tho.

11:30 pm ...... sounds fine to me, thats generally when music vids look better anyway. You know... its late and you've just come home, you're tired and you're probably under the influence of something, things are kind warpy .....thats when music vids rock !!
There are other shows on earlier that can cater to those folks that can't stay up till 11 (being school nights and all). But I think with M2, more bands and vids will get more air play more cheaply.... then we might start to see some cream floating to the top, and see bands getting recognitionMaybe M2 will become the on-air underground for video releases both good and bad.
Anything that help's promote NZ music ...
Anything that help's promote NZ music has just gotta' be good! 33% NZ is a big plus! Great idea and hope that M2 is a success! LET'S ALL SUPPORT GOOD NZ MUSIC HUH!!! After all it's DAM GOOD!!!!

I think anything that replaces shitty infomercials and soft-core pornographic movies has got to be a good thing and I hope people get behind M2.
That said though, I would encourage people to think of M2 as less of a "channel" and more like an extended show, a show which can be cancelled just as easilly as any other (need I remind you all of the ill-fated Ground Zero?). I only hope the "fresh, talented young hosts" aren't green-as graduates from the school of broadcasting that plan to spend their first "season" coming to grips with the show's/channel's format.
On the whole thought I think TVNZ have a great concept with M2 but I wonder how exactly they plan to entice the young masses out of the clubs and parties and onto their couches? Ground Zero had the same problem, and it looks like Space isn't far behind on hitting the scrapheap, either.

Even if no-one watches the thing, at least all those NZ bands will be getting APRA kick-backs for TV play of their vidoes. Nice.
nooooooooooooooooooo!.... screening ...
nooooooooooooooooooo!.... screening time is all wrong! But I guess that is probably the only time that they can put in on air...
Yeah, the hours are pretty hard out. ...
Yeah, the hours are pretty hard out. The intention of TVNZ is to eventually expand M2 - yay. The execs at TVNZ have said they are fully committed to supporting M2. At the end of the day (scuse the pun) I guess we gotta be grateful that there's more music on the telly.
Pepsi - if you've checked out M2 yet you'll probably have noticed that there's plenty of stuff on there that we haven't seen for yonks or new stuff that otherwise wouldn't get played on other music programmes...
