Righto, I've noticed a few comments about how negative we've all been lately. That started me thinking I wanted to change it. Then again, we have some members crankin' out the cheese, reinforcing each others self-belief and generally creating a warm fuzzy atmosphere, which I also want to nurture.
Right now, right here, what's making you feel good about:
1: Other members on this site
2: This site in general
3: New Zealand and its music?
How to start? Ok, everyone say something nice about ME!.... err.. ha, ha...... damn. anyway.
Crank out the cheese guys and girls... included is a link to a post by dust (22:45 · 04 Jan 03) that I was going to lay down the reply of UltraLove to, but instead I'll let this topic do the talking.
I'll start: I love the way that a group of NZM members, who are a total cross-section of NZ society, can come together and get on like a house on fire, merely due to thir love of our countries' music.

oh man, i am bad at cheese... but i'll try.
i have met alot of awesome people and made some great friends through this website. i like how willing everyone is to help other nzmers out, like how manamana is dropping me, tama, (and carl?) home after the foos gig because otherwise we'd be sleeping in the gutters of k rd like a bunch of hobos (no pressure mana). its like a big family in here. can you feel the love?
nice topic jimi.
I have only been posting on this forum ...
I have only been posting on this forum for a month or so, but everyone has been really friendly and really helpful with any questions I have asked about NZ bands. One of the nicest forums I have ever posted on.

Ditto Jimi, I thought it was so cool how we all got on awesomely. About other members? It's also so cool when people defend or back you in the little negative fights ;-)
& on NZ music, I just grin when I see the Cusp photos in Blink's magazine, especially flying Liam Finn, 'cos NZ musicians are so full of energy and passionate about their music and live gigs.
I first got into the music of NZ ...
I first got into the music of NZ through a friend of mine from Auckland. He's a perfectly splendid guy, and six years ago he sent me tapes of the Skeptics. I said to myself, "wow, this is like nothing I've ever heard before!" Then he sent me Shihad's Blue Light Disco ep, then he sent me Straitjacket Fits, Melt. By then I was hooked, I was a NZ music junkie and I just couldn't stop. My American friends (who have no idea what a goldmine I've found) think I seriously have a problem. They're going to spring an intervention on me any day now.
I'd heard from my kiwi friend that Shihad had relocated to the states and were changing their name, so I went stumbling around the internet looking for a bit of information --and what should I find, but THE ABSOLUTE BEST WEBSITE EVER for people who have a nasty addiction to NZ music. I spent a couple of months just trolling about the artists' pages, finding interesting new bands and more cd's to spend my money on. I only signed up with a user name because of the false advertizing that I may win a t-shirt for it.
Then on one fateful, yet incredibly boring, sunday I got roped into working. I had nothing better to do than muck about on the internet, and it wasn't long before I started reading the forums. I think by the end of the day I'd read most of the best of the boards. I still didn't post though, because I'm an American. It's not my music scene, it's not my culture.
I kept reading, and I got to know regulars and personalities, and at some point I guess there was a place for a snide comment to be made and I made it. As soon as I started posting in the forums, I was really surprised at how friendly and, well, un-elitist the entire bunch was.
It's nice to feel like a part of this group. It's great to be accepted into a community based only on our shared love of the NZ music (and our communal politeness), even though I live on the other side of the world and talk funny.
How do you like that cheese?
Oh, and jimi's awesome. I'd bake him a cake, but I'm afraid it would go bad in the mail.

Even though I'm going to get up on my grammatical high horse and state for the record that a preposition at the end of the sentence (as well as the split infinitive and run-on sentence) is an antiquated grammatical GUIDELINE carried over from Latin and does not officially break any rules of English grammar,
Heather wins the prize!!
You try being grammatically stringent while posting at 6 in the morning after being up half the night worrying about your poor leprous automobile (bits of it keep falling off).

Yeah, I just do it to annoy my friends, really. I also deliberately leave prepositions hanging sometimes, just because the "grammatically correct" phrase sounds ridiculous.

It's absolutely marvellous!
Dust, Teina, Joe et. al. have certainly created an environment where people aren't afraid to come and put in their two cents worth about whatever they happen to be thinking at the time. For me, it's just nice to hear what people around the country (and world) think about nz music, and specific bands on the scene -- in the old 'pre-nzmusic' days we were pretty much wrapped up in our own little scenes, and only really got to hear of other bands when they made a bit of a splash in the nationwide media. (Which was, and still is to a certain extent, tempered by the 'softly softly' approach most local mags have to local acts. You wouldn't get the kind of bile-laden criticism that bands like Rubicon and Blindspott seem to attract popping up in the monthly music mags, for example. People on nzmusic.com just tell it like they think it is. )
And it is a nice sense of community the site has going on. Despite the never-ending trickle of over-enthusiastic newbies (true enough for any forum, really, and they calm down eventually, ey Jimi?), the core group is cool, mostly on-the-ball with their observations (or at least firm in their argumentative convictions), and genuinely enthused and supportive of nz music. Blink's new zine is the classic example, and plenty of other members are actively involved in their local scenes, whether it be bands, promotion, distribution, *cough* other nz music websites, and the like.
Still haven't met any of you (with the exception of the nzmusic team and samflux) in the flesh though. I'll be the tall scruffy feller at BDO wearing my custom noizyboy t-shirt (my icon proudly transferred onto the front), so, if you spot me, feel free to come up and say gday.
I remember why I haven't been posting so much recently: aimless rambling...

That's a great post Noizy. I feel privileged for you to have attached it to my post!
You're spot on with the extension to my 'out there doing it' point. I think that's another thing which adds to this sites' mana - the fact we all have some link to nzmusic.... we may be musicians, listeners, suits or buskers, whatever, our opinions still count and are part of the evolution of music in this country. Reading comments that 'this site got me interested in live nz music' make me all warm and fuzzy inside :p
//over-enthusiastic newbies... and they calm down eventually, ey Jimi?),
Heh heh, they sure do. Being one of the older members, you've observed me from when I first came on here. On a self-absorbed note, I feel like I've matured over these couple of years, and it's been wonderful to have this site mature with me and grow into a record of my understanding of the world and the development of my empathetic skills. I have a long way to go still, and I hope NZMusic is there with me.
Another thing (I'll stop soon) that's great, is how human the Crew is. They post their opinions, they respond genuinely to any gripes (I was amazed they didn't treat me like an idiot when I thought my posts had been deleted - when in reality I didn't have 'All' selected), and you really feel like you are being led from the front on this amazing website, full of amazing people supporting our amazing country's amazing music! NZMusic.com has been awesome for me, a wicked resourse on every possible nz band i've wanted to know about and whiling away the time when I was in hospital by posting day in and day out in the forums. Honestly it kept me sane.
I've also met alot of great NZM people at gigs, who have introduced me to other bands that I may not have ever known about.
Cheers NZM!:)

i love that this is not a trendy site. there are few fads here. everything is kinda here to last. i mean, we can talk about the old classic nz music, the old classic nz music that maybe 3 of us have ever heard, and the new nz music. i've learnt a lot here, i've learnt a lot about other genres and learnt that we all have quite a bit in common though we might be using different beats/instruments. it's been a real education.
this site is a real gift, sometimes i can't believe it's up and functioning - no advertising, no agendas, it's just there and we all steer it.
it's a bit weird that i've only met one person from here, but i'm always on the lookout to remedy that.
and i love LOVE the videos. thanks to dust and joe in the early days for dealing with my blind panic in not being able to watch hitherbefore unseen 3Ds vids.

wow.
what a cool thing to stumble into this morning and read. makes me feel very stoked. I almost feel like the community is coming of age, speaking with a sense of its own heritage. unreal.
it's especially cool as we are rushing around to get stuff done before our plane for the 'rock n roll tour of a lifetime' boards tonight.
it's especially cool also as we are going to hit the 5000 kick-arse NZMusic-addict members mark (in the words of D4 - party - yes, the 5000 party, its just gotta happen...)
its especially cool as its probably the last post i'll read until Queens play on my 30th b'day in Sydney. a great buzz to fuel the plans for the future and keep us stoked IN BETWEEN SEEING THE BEST ROCK IN THE WORLD EVERY NIGHT!!!! OMG *freakin out*
What a couple of weeks its goin to be - a long needed break, but a little hard as NZM is going off.
Everyone be super nice to Joe, who's working through on the really really cool new stuff coming your way soon.
Jimi, great stuff, cheers noizy for that "ramble" -awesome coming from you bro!
I hope we can show the big intake of new members what all this magic in NZMusic is all about, you know that magic that was there before the hype, the deals, the bandwagon etc, it's all good.
velocity you are a model citizen, you should be nominated for honorary kiwi. great post.

Travelling around, I've missed not ...
Travelling around, I've missed not being able to have access through the day to NZMusic as conversations develop - coming in at wierd times when I have a pause and a net cafe, I feel I've been missing out - I guess that's a pretty good sign that this is a good community and one I feel part of, even if, with one or two exceptions, there's almost no-one my age here. Its great that it exists on fairy dust - there is a lot of love behind the scenes that keeps this place functioning, and I think we all need to acknowledge that.
As for NZ music, there are various grumblers about but I don't know if it has ever been healthier - it seems to be spreading out in all sorts of genres, with new bands/groups/artists popping up all the time, international success, things like the Cusp and other NZ music events, more and more of our own sounds on the radio, and not just student radio.
There are specific individuals here who make a great difference to the place by adding their own particular spark or enthusiasm, and some who have been specifically kind to me - like Jon Jr, aka, iluvtheclean and Heather. And then there's Velocity, who is in a class of her own!

There's no way I would have gotten the chance to meet a lot of you guys, and even if I did, possibly I wouldn't take the time out to get to know some of you, and that would have been a shame. It's been wonderful to befriend people based on our common love of kiwi music, without the extra parameters that affect your perception of a person - age, ethnicity, the clothes we wear, the friends with whom we hang out, whatever.
Probably some of us won't really hit it off if and when we actually meet up. However, the people I've met virtually will always be friends with whom I can laugh and argue and just spend time on these forums.
Love yiz all. myshkin, velocity, Dr Gymkhana, Megaccino, Prozaco, manamana, DJ Will, AchillesHeel, ocphuman, Stefan, Blindspott#1, dust, Teina, blink, Joe, Andoru, chunnsta, tclak, trixie, Tiffany, robyn, escy... you've all had an impact on me. That's just off the top of my head so there are plenty of names I'll have missed out. Don't feel bad...
It's quite weird to turn up at a gig and say "ummm... I've got this problem - a friend of mine is on tonight, however, I've never met her, I don't know what she looks like - as a matter of fact I don't even know her name. Whatever shall I do?" Fortunately for me Dr Gymkhana was the only chick performing last night.

Picking up on Heather's point about meeting people from this site - its kind of wierd also how, from reading people's posts, you get an idea in your head about what sort of person you're going to actually going to meet. We all probably think of Heather as being smart, funny, lovable, sexy... just from reading her here, yes? Before I met her, I was thinking, oh my God, she could be a real troll, four foot tall with big thick black hairs growing out of her face and the social skills of a mallowpuff (heaven for me actually, because that's what I'm like) but Heather is all her posts had suggested she'd be and more.
