Well, it's the start of a new year and NZ music is already making an impact on the world music market.
So - which bands do you think will strike gold this year? Which little kiwi bands will become big kiwi bands? Which big kiwi bands will become internationals? What bands do you know that aren't getting the recognition they deserve?

Hmm, P Money and King Kapisi maybe and possibly Ill Semantiks (but they need new MCs or the MCs need to sharpen up). NZ Hip Hop still needs some time to grow I think before hitting the world stage.

I think the 'the' bands will fade. Disco will come back in and everybody will start really appreciating about those wonderful beegees and all those dance moves we all learnt to mock the disco era will finally be considered cool. *Sigh* It might happen.

Augustino will release their album and become as big as the Feelers were before they got kinda boring.
The Brunettes will support Guns n Roses.
Zed will get regular showings on an American teen school drama as the band that plays in the background of all the school functions.
A bunch of kiwi hip-hop artists will relocate to Australia, and Aust will subsequently rave about the "Australian hip-hop" sound.
The Datsuns and the D4 will combine to form the greatest rocknroll band in the history of the world. Richard Branson will pee his pants. Virgin will trademark the term "Garage Rock" and then sue all the Brixton acts that continue to call themselves Garage.
Music industry giants in London will send spies into Willesden Green, Shepherd's Bush and Ealing Broadway to accost every single kiwi they see carrying a guitar. Unfortunately our rocknroll reputation will be sullied when half of the "kiwis" they round up turn out to be australians. However, by the time the new glut of bands has been churned out, NME will have made up a new craze.
Campbell Kneale will be at the forefront of the sudden explosion in the popularity of crazy psychotic music that noone really understands. Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada will harbour a grudge.

I predict that all of the NZ bands coming to the states in the next few months will realize that the only thing in the entire US that can satisfy their need for intellectual enlightenment while on tour is a trip to the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, and the only place they can see that is in Minneapolis. Then they'll all say to themselves, "Hey, since we're here, why don't we make velocity happy and play a kickass show at the Turf Club. I'm sure she'd bring all her friends. And maybe bake some cookies."
That's my prediction.

It sure is a pity they don't have many monkeys. Animals are interesting. I once read a great book on the sexual haibts of americans ala 1953 (commissioned by the US government i think), and it had a section on guinea pigs. I didn't read it, so don't ask me any questions.

NZ garage rock will lose its appeal as ...
NZ garage rock will lose its appeal as NME shifts away from it for some reason or other, thus resulting in people seeing NZ music as 'outmoded' across all genres, despite the fact that it is some of the most inventive music in the world. D'oh, another kick in the teeth.
After the terrible press this year, BDO can't stoop any lower.. maybe in 2003 it will have a shot at reinventing itself as a more alternative festival, as no big bands will have the balls to come.
Pacifier, Pacifier, Pacifier. I don't think Comfort Me, Run and My Mind's Sedate are enough tracks with which to satiate the apparent American metal-lust. Great band, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they'll crack the U.S.A this year short of releasing something special (like a Best Of? I know it's early days, but desperate times call for desperate measures!). Alternatively, they could give another market a shot - a decent push in the U.K could lead to them being hailed as a progression for the masses of Datsuns fans. If they are marketed as an kiwi-flavoured energetic live band, they may as well have a license to print money in England given the rollicking success of the Datsuns + D4.
Betchadupa... more likely to be an international commercial success? A lot of famous fans out there, 2003 could easily be their proper breakout year. They simply carry more weight and credibility than the NZ metal scene, and are more accessible. So I'd pick them over Blindspott/8 Foot Sativa to crack the international nut.
And a Weta reunion? I personally think they are one of the greatest bands NZ has ever seen, and ANYTHING would be better than the eerie silence following the release of Geographica. It's not like any of the band members GENUINELY have anything better to do... so think about it. Please, guys, for me?

A war will break out between blink and Tiffany over the competing popularity of their 'zines. This will cause serious rifts between nzmusic forum-dwellers as they begin to take sides. Eventually, a rival website will emerge in Orc-land - realnzmusic.com, and the 'zine wars will continue in earnest, rampaging across the virtual landscape, spilling out into cafes and gig venues all over the country.
