if you watch tv, chances are you've seen the air nz ad with the band who performs on the roof in LA and gets signed to capitol records.
air nz basically take the credit for the bands signing because the band flew air nz to get there.
question: what has air nz done for nz music to be using nz music to promote themselves? not that the band even exists (as far as i know). isn't this a little bit wrong?

Yeah, seen the ad, was wondering about the band. The manager chick is a b-list kiwi actor from way back, don't recognise any of the band, but the singing sounds familiar - just can't place it.
I don't think Air NZ are doing anything wrong - just using the current excitement about kiwi music to sell their product.
I didn't think they were claiming to have done amazing things for nz music - what I got from the ad was just a new variation of the old "kiwi ingenuity" theme. In this case, kiwi band does something exciting and adventurous that pays off. The idea is more that Air NZ fares are low enough for even the cash-strapped to take a risk.

The story from the Air NZ is inspired by the Datsuns rise to glory in the UK. The slogan, as with other ads in the campaign is "being there is everything" which was certainly the case for the Datsuns.
The band in the ad is called the Zephyrs a name no doubt made up by the ad makers but which is alsothe name of an established overseas act.
As for the ad being "wrong" - I would have thought that this ad might spark a couple more sales for the Datsuns rather than anything else.

Good point, Vietnow. Air NZ must be alluding to all the NZ bands that have recently signed to big overseas labels, making it seem like all you have to do to crack the big time is to GET THERE! (pat on the back Air NZ, although musos would fly Air Tibet or something a lot cheaper).
What a crock. They leave out the fact that if this happened in real life, the band would be arrested before even getting to the roof of Capitol records, and then have to spend a fortune on legal fees. It's possible the FBI would grill them for a while as suspected terrorists.
How did they get their amps etc., over there? Without any contacts? Must be a band that won lotto or something . . . I did notice that they have the image of a covers band, and covers bands are paid a million times more than original artists, maybe that's how!
All is sunny, healthy and happy in corporate-ad-land. Maybe that's because they're milking it.
Advertising expert for Air NZ: "Hey lets cash in on the recent international success of Kiwi music and make it look cheesy for EVERYONE!"
Boss: "Great idea, have a pay rise".
Lonely NZ Musician in LA: "I can't afford to eat because I spent all my money on a ticket to get over here."

it is an advertisement probably one of the better ones on the telly at the moment. why does everyone think that corporates need to do things for us. I believe that have a certain social obligation in general but why should they help further musicians interests it is not their core business. it is all anout getting a hand up not a hand out.
I like air New Zealand, they have never broken any of my instruments the have never lost any of my stuff, and once I left my diary in a trolley and they flew it from Auckland to hamilton for me.
plus we own them.

i just don't like the idea of a corporate jumping on the bandwagon (and nz music is one right now) when the reality is, they haven't shown any interest in helping nz music before. i just think if they're going to have an ad like this on tv, they should at least show a genuine interest in the industry.

Air New Zealand is a New Zealand company. The bands doing great overseas are New Zealand bands. Air New Zealand are proud of the Fact they would have flown New Zealand bands to get big. Big there was Everything for those bands.
If you want to start talking New Zealand bands and corporates should we move on to pacifier and the whoring that band has done? No didn't think so. That would not be ok because you would whinge and be a little sook.

its just an ad. ads are cheesy and unrealistic in general. how about the ol' "bugger" ad? i've never heard a dog say "bugger" in my entire life! just like i've never seen a woman put her clothes through the shredder in order to buy new ones (farmers i think), a bunch of little kids running an organisation to "build better lunchboxes", or people bandaging their hands because they've been doing too much txting.

I think the ad is just harmless and people are reading into it a bit too much.
Also, the drummer in the band is Wesley Dowdell who is a very talented actor and used to be the drummer for the band Jester. And apparently, the singer from Jester auditioned for the part of the singer,...not sure why he didn't get it though.
Hey there... I just had this idea! ...
Hey there...
I just had this idea! Whether or not the ad has merit and amusement in any way, this would be a great opportunity to force Air New Zealand to put its money where its mouth is!
A number of great NZ bands - PanAm, Goodshirt, Damien Binder and 8 Foot Sativa - are headed off to the South by Southwest festival in March in Texas. All these bands are going to have to come up with the money to get themselves there - a lot of money!
Air New Zealand with its new ad (which I havent seen as I'm in the US) gives the connotations of supporting NZ music. We should push them to cover the airfares for these groups to try to make it big in the US! I encourage all of you out there to write letters to your local paper, contact tv stations, radio stations, etc. If enough people (I reckon about 20 committed people) do this, then I think there is a good chance that Air New Zealand would yield and provide the fares for at least one of these groups - maybe them all!
Please think about this and discuss! This could be a once in a lifetime chance!
